Malice took a deep breath. Being surrounded by books was a nice feeling; the aged library books smelled vaguely musty and old, like death locked in a room. It was a soothing feeling, and while she didn’t particularly like to read the yellowed pages and shiny black ink brought her a certain amount of joy.
She sat, her legs crossed under her flowing skirt, in the middle of the aisle, engrossed in a thick illustrated book about the human body. The book was 400 pages full-color splendor, showing all the muscles, veins, organs, and other workings of a body. And while she couldn’t yet understand most of the big words, she enjoyed the pictures.

The library was silent when Tevadi walked in. It was devoid of crying little children and gossiping teenagers as far as she could see and hear, and she hoped that it would stay that way as the silence was one of the bigger reasons she devoted her time here everyday.
After dropping off her books at the librarian's desk, she headed straight to the non-fiction section (and not the children's non-fiction section, of course). Unlike her guardian who would only read mushy romance novels that were too fake to swallow, Tevadi preferred books on psychology, history, and culture. Just this morning she had finished a book on the psychology of aging and she hoped to read more by the same author.
Now, where were the author's books? She passed aisle by aisle until ah, she finally found the aisle. In all her excitement in finding the right aisle, she was not careful in where she was going and tripped on something. Tevadi widened her eyes when she found that that 'something' was a person.
"Sorry," she mumbled quietly.

“Sorry is right!” She hissed angrily at the other girl. “You stepped on my dress.” She was shooting daggers at the child, but was still mindful to keep her voice to a reasonable level. No point getting kicked out of the library over some stupid klutz who could’t watch where she was walking.
"I hope you're happy, it may be ruined."

"Oh," Tevadi said simply, looking at the other girl and her dress. She didn't know what else to say, but felt that her apology wasn't enough, looking at how angry the girl seemed. So, she added, "I didn't mean it, of course."
Feeling that that would suffice, Tevadi turned her head and glanced around the aisle, looking for the author she had been searching for.

Malice was stunned by the brush-off. Rarely, if ever, did anyone ignore her when she was angry. She frowned, stood up, and deposited her large book in a random spot on the shelf.
Going to stand behind the other child, she crossed her arms angrily, ready for a confrontation when the girl turned around. Her dainty black shoes tapped impatiently on the carpeted floor.

Tevadi, on the other hand, was completely clueless of the other girl's anger. In fact, the only thing on her mind right now was getting her hands on the author's books...and with a soft cry of joy, she pulled a heavy tomb out of the shelf.
"I think this is the second volume," she muttered to herself, pleased, and turned around to go read it. However, she was met with the other girl, who, judging from her expression, seemed angry at something. Was she still angry with Tevadi for stepping on her dress? That was silly, it wasn't as if she had hurt the girl or her book. But still, hwa had told her to be more sensitive of others' feelings (it was one of the reasons she had started reading psycology books) and so, Tevadi opened her mouth once more.
"If you are still angry about your dress, I'm sorry. But you can always wash it and it'll be good as new again."

“You stepped on me.” Malice stated angrily. “I don’t enjoy being stepped on, even when it is an “accident”.” She glared at the child, daring the other girl to argue with her. “I want a better apology, I deserve one.”

Tevadi didn't like the way that the other girl was glaring at her. Sure she had made a mistake but she had already apologized, hadn't she? She really didn't like admitting her mistakes in the first place.
Fighting her annoyance down, Tevadi apologized once more, trying to make herself sound sincere this time to end this tiring exchange of words once and for all. It didn't really work and made her sound more annoyed than she wanted to sound. "Well, I'm really, really sorry then," she said in monotone.
Then her face brightened up suddenly. "If you want me to recommend you some books as an apology, I'd be happy to do so. It seems like we have similar tastes, right? I mean, you're not in the kiddy section like the rest of the kids in our age go to."

"Children's books suck." Malice replied offhandedly in an angry tone. "And I don't care what kind of books you like."
She gave the other girl another long angry look.
"I don't think we have anything in common." She spat.
