It was a wonderfully hot day and the purple, red and white foal chasing a butterfly was able to appreciate the heat that seldom touched his home in the forest. If one had asked how he got to the marginal growth lands near the edge of the desert, he'd probably say that it was the logical destination after following the path to the creek, the creek to the clearing with the giant oak tree, the robin that nested in a tree nearby, a fox that hadn't liked his following and finally this butterfly.
It made sense to Calor, at any rate.
And it was very different out here, with next to no shade, so that the sun beat down on his back with no regard for the color of his hide. Actually, the foal thought it was somewhat appropriate, since his mother's human often said he was colored like the sunset. Only the sun above hadn't set yet. And he was supposed to be back in the clearing by then.
That was the deal after all. Mother had gotten sick and tired of trying to keep him from straying, since that was all he ever did, and so had warned him to be back in the clearing by sunset or suffer unspecified pain. And when Gemmae talked in that sort of tone, Calor had found it best to obey.
Still, the sun wasn't even at its zenith and he had many hours to go before it set. And the butterfly was trying to get away from him! Headwings flapping slightly, the foal continued his pursuit of the insect.

Hecate crept around the short shrubs and trees. She would peek a head out, then back to safety. Obviously, the blood-red filly was hiding from someone.
And in fact she was. Her father was gone for awhile, so Aunt Nagual was watching over her. While she liked her Aunt, sometimes the mare was just smothering.
Hevate then caugh sight of a colorful colt, and ducked under cover, just in case. But he was oblivious to her location, so she decided she would have a little fun. While he chased a butterfly, she chased him - but in secret.
The filly knew her desert, even if this was the outskirts with more plantlife than one might see further in. His back was to her, Hecate jumped lightly to another bush...but as the butterfly and colt turned directions, so she ducked low.
Oh, his back was too her again, Hecate made another run. For awhile, that was how it went - him chasing a butterfly and the filly trying to see how close she could get without him noticing.
Another attempt, Hecate could almost pull his tail and surprise him - and the thought was tempting, oh so tempting. In her indecision, it was made for her.... while trying to hide again very quickly, she forgot her surrounding and tripped ungracefully on a slightly exposed root.
The filly fell with a thump and oomph.

So focused on the butterfly, Calor almost didn't notice the sound of a small, but significant weight, hitting the ground behind him. Slowly, leisurely he turned around to see a red and black foal. A filly to his colt. And he saw one other thing in her.
"You have a horn too!" he blurted out, attention now riveted on the slender orange protrusion rising from her forehead, butterfly totally forgotten.
He was not afraid of this stranger, but he certainly hadn't expected to see her - or anyone for that matter! - out here by the desert. The foal cocked his head to the side and considered this stranger. Where did she come from? Why had she (apparently) been following him?
And, much more importantly, she had a horn too! This was good because the only other Soquili Calor knew of with a horn was his mother and while she was good to answer questions, she didn't play a lot.

Hecate snorted, an action she learned from a certain wordless one-eard kalona. "Of course I have a horn, I am a unicorn!" She smiled broadly. Her family (no matter how strange) made sure they knew she was a unicorn, and especially could heal things. Her Uncle kept asking her, but she didn't know how.... but this colt here didn't know that. "I can heal things too, you know!" The filly's tail swished back and forth.
"Can you heal things? I bet you can, with your own stubby horn!" Hecate blabbed, getting back to her feet, trying to forget her mistake. Oh, how Wolfbane would have been disappointed in that act...but he wasn't here!
"And what are those things by your ears?" Hecate crept forward and sniffed at them, obviously with no sense of proper space between two soquili.

"A'course I can heal things!" the colt declared proudly. "Just like Mommy," he told the stranger. She seemed like a nice filly, much nicer than Canace, and she didn't have wings to flap at him and fly with.
Then she started sniffing at his headwings. The protrubances stiffened in momentary alarm, unused to having anything that close to them. "Um, they're little wings," he answered, a little uncomfortable with how close she was getting to him. Even Canace didn't usually get so close even to annoy him.

Without warning, Hecate took a wing delicately in her mouth and nibbled just a bit. The mini-wings were unharmed, if just a bit damp. She released the captive object quickly. "Really? They don't taste like actual wings..... can you fly with them?"
The filly smiled broadly and had an obviously difficult time trying not to laugh as she thought of the colt flying around by his ear-wings... for that was what they looked like to her - just a second pair of ears that happen to look like wings. "Do they let you hear things better?"
Hecate circled and looked into the colt's eyes, "What do they do?"

Calor's headwings stiffened and flapped in alarm as Hecate nibbled on them. "Wh-what are you doing?" he squealed at the filly. "And they're not big enough to fly with," the foal admitted sadly.
As Hecate entered territory that Canace lived in, the colt became more and more nervy. "No, they're not ears ya silly!" he told her. "They're...they're just there!" he explained, failing to know the answer any better than Hecate.

The filly's own ears flattened to her head in defense to the colt's nervy-ness in his voice, not to mention his alarm. "Hey hey, no need to get so fendy," Hecate snickered with a smirk.
"Do they make you....... run faster?" Hecate asked yet again, pretending to ignore the comment they 'they're just there'. With a bright gleam in her eye, the filly twisted on her heels and bolted deeper into the desert... not so deep, for she had a desination in mind that wasn't all that far away. The filly didn't look back to see if he followed, she figured she'd have some fun with or without the colt who's name she didn't even know.

Calor gave the filly a sour look. Yeesh, she was even worse than Canace! And as he completed that thought, the other foal asked yet another stupid pointless question and ran off!
The colt stood there, stunned, for a few moments. What had just happened? Should he follow? Should he just ignore her? Finally he sighed and walked after her. Walked, not ran. If he caught up with Hecate, great, whatever. If he didn't, it wasn't a big loss at all.

Well, Hecate ran, and didn't stop until she reached her destination. The filly didn't know if he was following or if he was how far behind he might be. But she loved these places.
In random areas of the desert there were places where trees and grass grew, and with them were also water sources. Animals flocked to them, and as desert sand gave way to lush grass, Hecate breathed in the scent. They were like magic, these special oases.
The filly went to the small basin of a lake and took a sip. Unlike the hot desert air, the water was cool and refreshing. Looking back, she saw no shadow nor heard the pounding of hooves - so either he wasn't coming or he was taking his sweet time. Hecate didn't really mind.
Instead she walked around, gathering treats and snacks for herself and piling it under a palm tree. After collecting a rather good horde, Hecate lounged in the shade, revelling in the coolness and the soft sounds of the birds in the collection of trees there. She was facing the direction she had come...just in case.

The foal did follow the filly, muttering to himself all the while about how stupid and annoying and pointless fillies were. The world would probably be better off with fewer of them. It wasn't overly hard for Calor to follow the black and red girl's footprints at a leisurely pace, though he did lose the trail near the end.
He'd also lost interest by that point, and wanted little more than a drink. It took some careful sniffing, but the boy finally caught the scent of water and folowed it to its eventual conclusion - an oasis lake.
With Hecate already there, waiting for him.
Calor notably ignored the filly as he headed straight for the water to quench his thirst.

Oh, she felt lazy by the time he finally strolled into the lovely oasis. Her eyes had been half-closed and she didn't open them until he passed... to go get a drink. Males.
Without getting, Hecate looked at the colt, his back to him. He had a hairy tail. Her throat quivered a little. She was the only one she knew with a skin-tail - only a tuft of hair at the end. With the thought, she tightened her tail to her body, where it was curled around a folded leg and tickling her belly. He had a horn... but maybe that was where their similarities ended. As she watched him further, he also saw that his top lip was more pointed than before.
The filly continued to watch the colt, her eyes full of curiosity. Once, she grabbed a juicy fruit and nibbled on it - but her eyes never left him as she contemplated what everything meant.
