It probably wasn't normal for foals to be so morbid. Then again, how many foals could claim they had a spirit as a pet? A soft, chilling moan drifted between a pair of smoky fangs, and the baleful red eyes of Verin never blinked as the ghost continued its mindless circles around the pale unicorn. Ornias found himself quite attached to the spirit, liking him much more than most living things. Well, besides his family. He liked them about as much as Verin.

It was warm out, but the foal was careful to keep himself under the shade of the trees. The sun was always too bright and made his eyes hurt--sometimes bad enough that it made him cry. Except it wasn't crying, because he was never sad... He'd seen it splatter against the ground once, smelled the iron tang and noted the bright crimson color. Blood. Verin had been driven into a frenzy, snapping his fangs and harrying the spot until Ornias had gotten irritated and shooed him off. But he wouldn't deny that he'd liked the smell, too. It made him hungry.

With a flick of his tail, the boy found himself prowling quietly through the underbrush in search of something to entertain him. He knew his family had to be nearby--they were always good for a bit of fun. But what if he found something else? "You'd have to play nice, Verin." The colt scolded; last time he'd managed to find a rabbit, and the spirit had burst from the bushes with a horrible, wailing shriek. The tiny creature had jerked, then toppled over, as stiff as any tree. The blood-smell had been present there, too.

Verin moaned a quiet assent to his command, nesting into the colt's mane though he continued to drift with impatience. Ornias was sure he'd listen this time, and continued on. He wasn't really good at being sneaky yet, and his pale body stuck out like a sore thumb, but he'd get better at it! Maybe he'd see if he could take his sister by surprise...

The rabbit had been delicious and Taboo had been appeased. Like his mother, brother and sister, Wendigo also had a spirit of his own. This spirit claimed to be called Taboo and he required souls to survive. He would often whisper into the young foal's ear, begging him to consume small animals. Wendigo was fully convinced that every time he ate the flesh of an animal, its soul was consumed by both he and Taboo, thus.. making them stronger.

Wendigo tried to keep his snack habit away from his family. While he knew that his father liked blood, he wasn't sure if any of them were quite like him. He wanted to blame his difference on Taboo but he would be lying if he said he didn't like the taste of flesh and blood. It didn't stop him from liking apples and other things though, thankfully. That allowed him to hide his and Taboo's obsession away from his family more easily.

Kicking the carcass into a nearby bush, the foal decided it was time to head back. Perhaps he would check on his brother and sister. He was curious to find out if they were like him.. or like their parents for that matter. He was also curious if their spirits talked to them and whispered promises in their ears. Though he wanted to trust Taboo, he found it hard to at times. At least Taboo seemed happy for the moment. The white spirit was looping himself around the foal's body, an action he only did when he was content.

"Time to go home, Taboo," he called back and took off at a run.

"Well, what do you think," the tall, pale stallion asked his wolf friend. The two had been watching the foals all morning, though they seemed to have wandered off for the time being. Caine wasn't sure if he should have followed them or not but in the end, decided that it would do them some good to be independent. He would be around if he was needed.

"Honestly, Caine, I don't think you could have had a finer lot," Malkav started. "The only thing that I don't understand are the ghost creatures that follow them around. It's not natural and quite frankly, it's a little unnerving. As far as your foals go, they look strong and healthy. The one looks very much like you. What I'm curious to find out though is how much like you they really are. They could end up like their mother," he pointed out.

The large stallion wasn't sure if he liked or hated that idea. Naviah had been beautiful but she wasn't.. all there. Would these foals think they were part of the spirit would as well? Or believe that he and everyone else in the land were dead? While Caine might have smelled of death, he did not like to be considered as dead. He had tolerated the mare though. He had humored her long enough to get what he had wanted from her. It hadn't been hard. The fact he smelled of death had made it rather easy.

Admittingly, he had not put a lot of thought into this foal thing. He had heard his brother, Louie had impregnated a mare and wanted to do the same. It bothered him that his brother had just settled into the land and started a family so quickly. Caine was ostracized. He was unsure if it was because of his habits or because of his smell but it certainly led him to a life of loneliness... until Malkav. The wolf was his best friend. Caine cared for his opinion more than that of the mare, Naviah, or anyone else.

"They are good foals," he commented finally. He was rather fond of the fact that one of his sons came out more like him than Naviah. There was a natural pride to it. He knew that this son would have more difficulties than the other. The sun was far more harsh to pale backs. Perhaps it was time to talk to his sons and find out.. how they think and feel about certain topics.

Turning back to Malkav he addressed the ghost issue, "I don't like the spirits either, my friend. Perhaps we will need to do something about them." How does one go about killing something that's already dead? Perhaps Naviah would know the answer to that. Of course, he'd most likely have to try to trick it out of her.

"Let's go find the boys," he stated and took off in the direction they had went. Ever obedient, the wolf followed close behind.

The ghostly whisper of grating fangs was enough to force the young colt to slow, curiously tipping his ears back to listen. Verin was agitated. The demonic spirit wove itself in seeping, smoky coils around the base of his neck, staring with his baleful eyes off into the shadows. Suddenly, he seemed to calm, and a moaning sigh slipped past his ragged teeth before he again nestled into Ornias' mane. So, whoever it was, Verin knew them... that meant someone from his family. He couldn't help but grin at the thought.

Careful not to step on any stray twigs, the unicorn slowly eased himself into some of the thicker bushes. Whoever it was, they'd be in for a shock! He tried to see if he couldn't mask his white hide, knowing that it was a disadvantage... but, Dad was even brighter than he was. Ornias respected his father, though he'd never spoken to him much. He was an intimidating stallion. He hoped he'd be like that, someday--big, tough, and someone you didn't want to mess with.

Thundering hooves distracted him from his own musings, and his milky gaze tracked the indigo form he recognized instantly to be his brother. Verin rumbled with malcontent, barely more than a whisper in the boy's ear, and Ornias needed no further urging to stalk forward after Wendigo had shot past. His own gallop quickly brought him up on his brother's heels, and he snapped playfully at a flank before drawing up to his level.

"Well, look who's out sneaking around by himself... Awfully suspicious." He teased, tail flicking with amusement. Inwardly, he was curious; what had his brother been up to? Ornias liked to come out here to hide from the sun, but his sister and brother had never followed him before. Verin arched himself up like a serpent to peer at Taboo, rattling his jaws softly from side to side like he knew something. Ornias frowned a little, tilting his head to watch him. What was going on?

"Looks to me like you're doing the same," Wendigo shot back, not realizing that his brother was teasing. He didn't mind his brother but he was wary of his brother's spirit all the same. He slowed down to a walk, using this time to work up a conversation with his brother. His spirit, Taboo, was floating above him now, looking at Verin. Could they communicate without words or were they trying to stare one another down? It was hard to say.

"Ornias," Wendigo started, trying to find the right words. It seemed such things came more readily to his siblings than to him. "Does.. your spirit.. talk to you? If so.. what does he say? Does he.. tell you things?" He knew that he was being vague but he didn't want to give away his own secrets to his brother. He could already sense the bond with Taboo tightening as if the spirit was reminding him not to take the conversation too far. Why was that? Did Taboo have something to hide? The actions of his spirit only made the foal more curious. It wasn't that he doubted Taboo. After eating the rabbit, he certainly DID feel stronger. But was it something that his brother did as well? Or did each spirit have.. different talents?

Sighing, the little foal shook his head. It seemed the more he thought about such things, the more confused he became.

"I don't like the sun." Ornias replied simply, cocking his head to better eye Taboo. He had a nasty set of jaws, too--but at least he had full ones, unlike his spirit. Verin seemed to wilt a little, tilting his malformed skull to pin a wide-eyed, empty stare on the colt. Well hey, it's true! He teased, somehow amused with the way the ghost made to bare his fangs, as though over exaggerating their length.

An ear twisted at the sound of his name, and he studied his brother for a long time with a musing expression. "Never in words.... but..." He frowned a little, scrunching up his face as though trying to remember. "He can make me feel things... sometimes. Like. When bad things happen." Like that rabbit when Verin had scared it to death. "He... and I can feel like it's okay. Like the bad things are supposed to happen, just like the good things. So the bad things feel like good things, and I don't have to be sad about them." His tail flicked for a moment, and the spirit overhead whispered a hissing sigh of wordless reassurance.

"Does... yours do that, too?" Ornias ventured curiously, half-hopeful and half...something. Wendigo wouldn't have brought it up just out of the blue otherwise, right?
