Don't get me wrong. Usually I just shrug this stuff off. But honestly, I don't understand what the big deal is.

Question 1: What is so bad about OOC-only posts? I honestly can't see any substantial reason to avoid them, if using them serves a half-decent purpose. For example, asking a question, giving everyone else a bit of information, or asking just when the hell everyone else plans to stop lurking and actually post.

Question 2: What is so bad about double-posts? To be frank, I think it's better to double post than to edit, because if you just edit, there's a good chance that someone who has already read the post will not see the edit - especially if it's just a small note that you wanted to add on, but an important one nonetheless.

I'm an intelligent guy. I consider myself a half-decent roleplayer, and damned if I don't have better command of the English language than a lot of the people I deal with, especially online. So why does it ignite such a b***h-fest whenever I make OOC-only posts or when I double-post?

Please respond before I tear my (or someone else's) hair out.

I think the aversion towards pure OOC posts stems from people carrying on totally unrelated conversations, and eventually diluting what was an RP into a chat, if what you're talking about is related I see no reason to restrict what and how you can post.

Totally agree with #2, unless you just posted and you know it hasn't been long enough for someone to see it; though there have been several times where in whatever conversation I'm involved with everybody else disappears and I end up with a bunch of posts in a row, then I start to edit

^^;; Sorry I yelled, I didn't mean to sound all pissy or snotty, but my aversion to OOC only and double-posts comes from RP conditioning. Because most, if not all, of the RPs I've been in have been all "no OOC only!" and "no double posts!" I've kinda gotten to where I do it too...

I don't mind OOC only personally, but it does start to look like we're not doing anything if a lot of people start doing it, and it kinda does this odd thing to me where I think to myself: "Yay! New post! I can't wait to re-... oh... it's just some random stuff..." Not that your stuff was random...

Also... off the record, the Christian comment stems from the fact that I'm a Tameran Wiccan and while I'm personally not offended by, as I so horriably put it, "pulling them from nowhere" it would kinda be offensive if whoever did decide to use a biblical character decided that he could be all "And then he asked God to smite the non-believers, and smite he did"... >< Yeah... That, and most people like to pretend the angent gods weren't really gods and were just story book characters or something. No respect.

As for the double post, it's mostly from conditioning and also from random people going: "They posted twice! I never got a chance to do anything!" Whenever they feel like being pissy about it... Um, so yeah.... Sorry.

It wasn't purely a response to the Egypt roleplay situation, though that kind of topped it off. No worries.

Totally off the topic of this thread:

Further off-the-record, I'm not so crass as to bring in spontaneous smiting on the part of any divine power. ;D As to pretending the ancient gods weren't really gods, well, I prefer to simply say that humans have a tendency to think that everything is clear-cut and simple, when this is simply not the case. Regardless of the truth of the matter regarding whether Anubis existed, I highly doubt he would go walking around in downtown Thebes in full deity-regalia. That also applies to Buddha, Zeus, Jesus (who won't be born for a long time yet in any case), and Marvin the Martian. Belief is the key to true power, and people who make their beliefs contingent on seeing blatant supernatural feats are bound to be disappointed. Seeing is not believing, kids. smile

I agree with most of you guys, lol. Post shouldn't be UNRELATED OOC-Only, but a quick "Hey, what happened to this character?" or "Wait what did you mean by ___?" can HELP the RP. biggrin Not to mention avoid confusion and fighting later.

Double posting, meh. I really do think it SHOULD be avoided more often than not, because if someone has already read it and DIDN'T reply, well.. How often do YOU remember EVERY detail of a post you read the previous day? They're going to need to at least skim if not read it again anyway. However, that's not to say I would be exceptionally angry if I saw a DOUBLE-post. It's when people are like triple and quadruple that gets really annoying. >.< OR, when (as someone started going toward earlier) the person uses two seperate posts as a tool. For example, the first ends "..loosed his mighty attack!" while the second begins "The attack hit with great force.." and the poster claims "Well I gave you time, you should've been online!" <.< Yyyeah.

If you're really worried about people not seeing edits, though, why not put a big "EDIT:"? It's always gotten my attention from people in RP's. ^^

Still, even though I personally find it a tad annoying, others, like you, do prefer it. So I say as long as the time between those posts shouldn't obviously have been given to another character, double-posting vs. editing should really be left to personal preference.

----

As for the deity thing-
The way I see it, personal or even in-RP religion means nothing in the case you guys mentioned. The guy was GodModding... xD In more ways than one! LOL! Even in a loosely moderated RP, no player should ever be allowed to control a powerful force to his or her own characters' advantage, especially in a combative sense. Unless, of course, that powerful force is something like a tank or spell the character worked hard to earn. But even then, no player should be allowed to say when they/their actions kill things that they don't own, even NPCs. Even in a one-on-one RP, the two players should be each others' mods. *nodnod* After all, if you want to GodMod, you should stop RPing and just be an author. *nodmore*

Double posting looks bad. That's pretty much everyone's beef with it. If your post is going to end up right next to your other post, an edit would do just as well usually. I agree that people might miss it, but just point it out if someone does. Chances are it doesn't really matter anyway.

OOC chatter can get annoying in a steadily moving RP just because it causes other people to chatter ooc on the page and eventually clogs up the whole thing. It's like cholesterol. A little bit of cholesterol is good for your body, it keeps the cell walls fluid and puts little tags on them so they can recognize each other quickly. Too much cholesterol and you have a heart attack. OOC comments can keep your RP flowing without arguments or misunderstandings, but if you get too much people will just leave instead of bothering to read all the stuff that they just don't care about.

I tend to make OOC comments, even in RPs that say "no OOC!" I just always put a line at the end saying that I'll delete the comment in five minutes or so. I get what I need clarified, and I delete my comments. Everyone is happy.

Also: If an RP has an OOC thread, use that. Lots of threads get pissy about OOC in the IC thread simply because they made an entire thread for OOC, and nobody ever uses it because they all post OOC in the IC thread.

I always thought OOC threads were for conversations, where it was ok to ask questions or make notes along side the RP, just anything big or long or in depth should go to the OOC thread
