The heat was stifling. Way too hot to go to school... at least thats what Kaimi was using as her excuse. The truth was that she would use any skewed reasoning to skip class and take off on her bike. In the little wire basket attatched to the handle bars she had stuffed a boom-box that was battery-powered, a couple of sandwiches and a towel. Today she was determined to find the beach.

After a few wrong turns, she finally found herself gazing across an expanse of sand and vividly blue water. Locking her bike, she grabbed her things and headed closer to the water, a wide self-satisfied smile spreading across her face.

Kaimi hadn't been the only one who had escaped to the beach that day, but Keres had had a much easier time getting there.

Further down the beach she stood partially in the surf now, and the cool waters sloshed around her four feline limbs and long, glossy serpent tail. In one hand she held a brown canvas bag that had some weight in one of its corners, and with her other hand she shaded her squinting eyes as she bent over slightly and looked about the sand as the water receded.

"Come on, you buggers," she mumbled and unconsciously gave a short flap of her gold plumed wings out of slight annoyance, oblivious to any thing else going on around her.

She had spread her towel on the sand and set her boom-box to anchor it down. Once settled, Kaimi turned her gaze again to the bright water and warm sand. Out of the corner of her eye, a flash of gold grabbed her attention.

Wings. And... and paws? And a snake's tail? Kaimi turned fully and stared at the other girl who was clearly concentrating very hard on somehting. Never one to be shy or to pass up the opportunity, Kaimi slipped out of her sandals and trotted barefooted over towards Keres. She stopped a few yards away, taking in the girl's unusual appearance and not entirely sure that this wasn't some magical creature that had come out of the ocean or something.

Wiping the stare off her face, Kaimi replaced it with her customary friendly grin. "Hi!" She said to the other girl, still standing a little ways away just in case Keres turned out to be a denzien of the deep wanting to pull her under or something. "I'm Kaimi! Who're you?"

Keres was hesitant about looking away from the surf around her feet, but eventually she turned her head towards Kaimi. It took her a few moments for her eyes to adjust after staring at sun-dazzled water and she squinted her eyes more and puckered her lips slightly. The other girl was much shorter than she was, and by the looks of it she had greenish-blue hair...? Well, that was COOL.

"Umm... Hi?" Keres said, finally. Giving a good blinking session to her eyes, she lowered her hand and straightened her posture. "I'm Keres. I like the color of your hair... Anya won't even let me cut mine."

Kaimi grinned up at the girl, pleased with the compliment. "I like your wings! And your tail! And your... your..." She paused, not sure what to call it. "Your cat parts!" Walking up closer to Keres, determined that she wasn't any sort of threat, Kaimi peered at the water that Keres had just been staring so intently at. "Whatcha looking for?"

Keres moved each part of her body as it was complimented on -- a flap of her wings, a light flick of the tip of her tail, a raised fore-paw -- and then gave a smirky-smile in return. "Thanks," she said, and then turned her attention back down to the surf.

"Shells and stuff, or seaglass -- that stuff is pretty, I have a whole collection at home -- but right now I'm trying to catch a stupid sand dab... crab thing. My cat likes to watch them swim around in a bowl ... AND then freak out Rann," she said, giving a small, evil laugh at the latter.

Kaimi stepped closer to Keres, peering into the water with her eyes narrowed. Crab-hunting, eh? Tucking a long strand of hair behind her ear (just to have it fall back over her face) Kaimi crouched down in the surf to get a better view. "Whats a Rann?" Kaimi asked, still searching for the elusive crab.

Keres blinked at Kaimi as a moment of confusion went between them, but she chuckled a second later. "A 'Rann' is the sister of an 'Anya'," the sphinx-child began, "and an 'Anya' is my 'Guardian' person." Keres held up both her hands and made a quotation gesture with her fingers.

When she was sure that that answer would be sufficient enough, she looked back into the surf as it came up around her legs again. ...But being Keres, she couldn't keep her mouth shut for long. "And there's also Isaac. He's like an uncle .... a -weird- uncle. They all have big long rabbit ears and deer horns -- OH LOOK! THERE'S ONEOHMYGODGETITGETIT!"

Keres waved her hand at an area around two feet in front of her before she leaped forwards and started digging with her fore-paws.

Kaimi had just been getting ready to open her mouth about her own Guardian person when Keres spotted the crab and shouted. With a whoop of excitement, the girl threw herself into the water and started digging too, scrabbling to catch the critter.

"I think I got it!" She yelped in excitement, her hands closing around the crab. Though not for long. The little sucker gave her a pinch and scrabbled out of her grasp. "I lost it! Get it!" She shouted, splashing everywhere.

Keres had been a bit more reserved on the whole diving-and-getting-the-crab thing, but when the little bugger slipped out of Kaimi's grasp, she kinda stopped caring about getting wet.

"COME BACK!" she cried, and she jumped forward again and landed with her front half down in the sand and her hands clamped around what she -hoped- was the stupid crab. As she raised her hands to open them, the surf sloshes up her front and washed out whatever she had been holding.

"UGH!"

Kaimi, by this point, was soaking wet and covered in sand. Shoving her dripping hair out of her face and shaking her head vigorously to clear the water off the drooping petals of the flower in her hair. "Did we lose it?" Kaimi asked anxiously, peering out at the water.

"Yup," Keres replied, soberly. She brushed away some of her own hair and then rung out some of her "top" (AKA: hanging fabric). "Stupid thing's somewhere out there now," she added a few minutes later, her hand waving out to the sea.

"Oh well. There's gotta be more out here somewhere."

Kaimi was only half-listening, staring wide-eyed at Keres' flank. "Shhh..." She said, sidling around the other girl. "Theres one in your fur." This was stated in a dramatic stage whisper as Kaimi's face spread into a wicked grin. "Hold still..."
PostPosted: Wed Sep 10, 2008 5:06 pm

Keres froze like a rigid piece of ice, her eyes wide and her teeth clenched. Her wings started to rise in fear out of instinct, and the fur along her feline spine did the same. "Oh my goooodd...." she choked, and turned her head a little to watch Kaimi.

"GET. IT. OFF. Ohmygodgetitoffgetitoff! You have two seconds before I FREAK out here!" Keres cried. Holding one of the crabs in her hands was fine, but having them on her body?! NUH UH, girlfriend, SO NOT OK. More like gross.

Swept up in the sphinx's emotions, Kaimi squealed and clapped her hands over the crab. "IGOTITIGOTIT!" She shouted, not knowing what to do with it. The feeling of the little thing skittering around in her palms was weird. "What do I do?" She was shaking her clasped hands as if that would somehow solve everything and doing weird nervous dancing steps in the sand.
