She yawned and rolled over to scratch her tummy with a forepaw. Sleep came easy for a cub though Eeva didn't quite understand why. Maybe it was because cubs used up more energy than adults. Either way, she was awake now and ready to start doing something.
Though maybe she'd just have a bit of a stretch first.
She lay at her mother's side, tucked up against her brothers to share warmth and comfort. She lay sprawled partly over Kohana, her elder brother, but he hadn't seemed to mind.
So, with another yawn she blinked blearily through the darkness of the den, seeing the shape of her father guarding outside. Listening carefully, though, she was pretty sure he'd fallen asleep in the pale sunshine.
A mischievious grin crept across her face.
Kohana had been awake for quite some time, though he couldn't think of anything better to do at the moment. Laying warm at his mother's side with his younger sister flopped over his back seemed a decent enough past time. He didn't speak much. Now and then a single word, though he seemed more fond of making grunts or silent nods of aknowlegement more than anything else.
An ear rolled back as his sister shifted on his back. The cub's brow creased at the grin that had spread upon his sister's features. He cleared his throat and glanced up to her. Just what was she up to?
And seeming not to notice that her brother was aware that she was up to something, she wriggled free from the mass of bodies and crept slowly up towards the entrance of the den. The world was still new to her and she was desperate to explore.
Eeva certainly wasn't shy or timid. She took after her mother in that respects. She was certainly prepared to take the initiative in any case.
So with a small giggle she trotted up towards the entrance of the den, pausing to step quietly over her father's tail and slip out behind him.
Eeva was escaping!!
Kohana rolled his eyes and stood up quietly, careful not to disturb the other two siblings that slept just beside him. Eeva certainly took after their mother more than the rest it seemed... far too bold, far too willing to slip out- and far too good at it. Kohana, however, took after their father's ability for detail.
He stepped after the female, his ears rolling back against his head in annoyance.
She spared a moment to glance back at father. Yes, as she suspected he was sound asleep. His eyes were closed, his breathing was even and his face was relaxed. She paused a moment to marvel at the size of his paws compared to hers, the size of his ears and nose, too.
And father had said that compared to most lions, Ela'wadiyians were small! What would outsider lions look like if they truly were bigger than father?
Then, remembering she wasn't supposed to be outside she quickly skittered off, out of sight, so she could explore. It would be fine. She'd been outside a few times now and nothing bad had ever happened. Besides, she wouldn't go far. If trouble did come, she'd call and father would come running!
She quickened her step and began to lope towards the stream.
Kohana's pace picked up as his sister bolted off. He leapt over his sleeping father's tail with a quiet glance over to the seemingly large male. He could cry out and wake him...but he might get in trouble for running out as well. He wasn't ready to take the heat for his sister.
He huffed and looked forward once more. Where was she going!? He'd had enough. The cub lunged out and bit down on his sister's tail- careful not to actually bite her, just enough to grab and hold her back.
One moment she was escaping to freedom, and the next...?
She muffled an eep as she felt a tug on her tail and suddenly she was being held back from the world. A mew escaped from her throat and she turned to face her foe, half expecting it to be her father.
It wasn't.
"Kohana Subiani!" She hissed in a hushed voice. "Don't pounce a lady!" And she tugged her tail free, casting a glance at Ona'raha as she did so. Phew, he hadn't woken up.
"What's wrong, Ko? Want to come to?"
He complied and released her tail, though his scowl only deepened. They knew better than to wonder off. At least he did. The cub gave a long, drawn out sigh and lowered his head inbetween his shoulders.
"..No." He said simply, then nodded back over his shoulder. They needed to get back. It wasn't safe.
"Oh come on Kohana." She chided gently. "It's alright. I won't go far and if anything bad comes along I'll just call out to father. He's so big and strong, no one would dare cross with him!" She reached out with a paw as if to comfort him from anything bad he might be thinking.
"Besides, it'd be safer if there was two of us." She smiled and laced her words with a purr. "Aren't you just a little curious about the world? It's so big and beautiful and there's flowers and..." What were they called again? "Um...butterflies." She'd learnt their name after asking mother and father. Before that she'd thought them flying flowers.
"Lots of nice things, anyway."
"No." He echoed, this time more sharply. He wasn't the adventure type. If they needed to see the world, their parents would take them out. And obviously if they had to sneak out, they weren't doing the right thing.
He nodded back to the cave once more, not a hint of comprimise in his eyes. "Now."
She rolled her eyes.
Fine, if he was going to be like that then she was going to have to show him that he didn't need to worry. She leapt back away from him with a giggle and eyed him expectantly.
"Scaredy-cat!" She stuck out her tongue at him, cast one last look at her father, then turned and sped off. She was heading for the stream again and luckily it was only a short distance away from the den.
The stream was fun because it was shallow enough for a cub to play in relatively safely and there were rocks to jump on, fish to chase and frogs to catch. The stream was the best playground for a cub. Especially an adventurous one like Eeva.
She cast a glance over her shoulder to see if her brother was following.
His glare quickly became a worried wince. Damnable girl! He opened his mouth to protest but snapped it shut in favor of running after his younger sister. As the oldest, it was his job to keep the others safe- at least it was in his own mind. He fully expected that Eeva would be the one to test his duty the most.
Now and then he'd glance around, marking the land around them. It was no use- he didn't know this area. If he kept his eyes on the landscape, he'd loose his sister.
The cub huffed and picked up his pace, grumbling all the while.
"Lay low you fiend!" Another voice piped in from near the stream, young but loud enough to make even a seasoned adult wince. "For you face the greatest warrior of all! Nekoda'Waya! The painted wolf of the mountain!~"
A brown cub with neon green paws leapt down upon a small beetle, swishing his tail about as he trapped his pray under a paw. "Haha! Victory again!"
Smiling as she saw her brother was indeed following after her, she turned back to face the way she was running. The stream would soon be hers!
Or it would have been if she hadn't been distracted by the sudden, piping voice. "Fiend?" She slowed and glanced through a parting in the bushes to see, much to her surprise, another cub!
She slowed to a halt and looked thoughtfully at the other boy. Was that it then? Was she the only girl in the whole of the lands? Well...that just made her even more special! With a smile she stepped towards the stranger, tail swishing behind her.
"Wolf of the Mountain?" She chirped curiously. "What are you doing? Playing?"
The stranger couldn't escape Kohana's attentions if he wanted him to. The younger male gasped and jumped out of the bush, intercepting his sister with a firm shake of his head. He dipped himself down and shot a glare to the strange cub, his hackles lifting up slowly from his back.
Nekoda yelped and fell back to his bum, releasing his hold on the beetle. "Aw man....there goes my lunch." He huffed, seemingly unconcerned with the appearence of the two.
He got himself back up to his paws, only then giving the two his attention. "Huh? Oh uh...." He cleared his throat, "I'm hun tin."
She rolled her eyes again, (it seemed that it was becoming a habit for her) and pushed up to stand alongside her brother, pressing hre side against his in an effort to calm him. Why so angry at a cub that was just like them? Yes, he looekd a little older and he was certainly...odd. But that was no reason to act so defensive!
"Hunting?" Her eyes lit up. "Really? What are you hunting? Something tasty?" Her ears pulled forwards and she padded slowly towards the stranger.
Hunting was something that intrigued Eeva. She knew that one day she'd be hunting too, that she was going to be expected to provide for her Clan.

"I'm hunting...." He looked around then puffed his chest up, "I'm hunting the beast of the mountain! A huge monster with...with...big! BIG tusks and six legs covered in claws, big as a mountain!"
"Let's go..." Kohana pushed at his sister slightly. He didn't know this cub , he didn't like how loud he was...and he certainly didn't like the idea of
But Eeva's eyes were growing wide with wonder. A monster as big as a mountain with big tusks and claws? It sounded like something from the stories they were told! It sounded...fantastic! Excitement gripped her little heart and she took another step forwards.
An ear tipped belatedly towards her brother and she turned to give him a tender smile. "Don't worry. If the monster is that big, we'd see it coming." She flinched her whiskers and turned back to the odd cub. He was odd but he seemed friendly enough.
"You're...Nekoda?" She smiled. "This is my brother Kohana and I'm Eeva. We're from the Shadow Clan. My mother is one of the best huntresses in the land. Maybe we can help you catch the monster!"
See it coming....right before it gobbled them up. He gave her another eager push away, this time circling around to keep inbetween her and the strange cub. "Come on...please?"
"Nekoda'Waya. Bravest in the land." He puffed his chest up. Another clan! He'd heard that there were other lions sharing the mountains with them. Of course that meant he'd gone a bit farther than...was probably allowed. But more cubs! They didn't seem nearly as stuffy as his siblings.
"Hunters! Good, I'll need help to find this mighty beast..maybe we can find one for each of us. Fill our bellies and all that."
She glanced between the two boys, suddenly torn. Her loyalties lay firstmost with her brother. They were of the same Clan and they needed to look out for one another. However...Nekoda's offer was so tempting.
If she was going to be a great huntress one day then she had to learn how to beat big, horrible monsters! That was all there was to it.
"Kohana..."
Her eyes slipped back to Nekoda and the smile worked its way back onto her face. "Kohana...don't you want to make mother proud? If we do this, if we team up with Nekoda than we'll be legendary!" Her eyes were pleading.
"Besides, if Nekoda is the bravest then we won't have anything to worry about. And look, he is bigger than us."
Nekoda puffed his chest out and rolled his shoulders back. He was big! He spared a casual glance to the stream, eyeing his own relfection. Had his mane really grown? Was he really taller? Maybe he'd become as big as the black lion he'd encountered.
Kohana only shook his head again, sharply, and firmly. It wasn't right. How proud would she be if they'd run off to get themselves killed? Squished, eaten, mutilated!? Or even just lost looking for the thing.
Eeva looked sadly at her brother. If only he would stop worrying so much. If only he'd just smile a little. She moved over to face him and gave him a lick on the nose.
"If it gets too dangerous we'll come straight home. I promise."
She blinked her summer sky eyes at him and turned back to look at Nekoda. A smile twitched there again.
"You are bigger than us." She said with a purr. "You'll protect us, won't you Nekoda?"
"Of course! A good guy always protects the girls. That's our job you know." He stepped forward and patted the girl on the shoulder. "And we'll be heros! It's not that hard to kill them you know. You just gotta jump on their back and use your claws."
He growled and swiped at the air, "Like that. Vicious!"
Kohana sighed and slowly put a paw to his face. This wasn't going to end well... how would he explain this? He coudln't drag her back...what if the other cub was from an enemy tribe? ...were there enemy tribes?

She beamed, seemingly content with that. She liked this boy and his odd nature. He was up for adventure and he didn't mind bending rules to have some fun. Heck, that was what the rules were there for, right? To see how far you could bend them before they broke and you got a good telling off.
"Use claws, right, got it."
She span to face her brother, wriggling her nose in an attempt to hold back her excited mewl. That had to have convinced him, right? Right? "Come on then Ko-Ko!" She squeaked. "Else you'll get left behind. If you want to watch over me, you gots to come." Then, with a peal of laughter - clear and bright - she turned back to her newfound friend. "Okay, Nekoda, lead the way!"
And she bounced from paw to paw with anticipation.
