Marut felt the stretch of her muscles, coupled with the sheer exhiliration of running fast, her mane whipping away from her face, her tail behind her, streaming like a black banner, hooves pounding on the ground. She puffed, the ground was slowly getting steeper, climbing up to a hill, and then she crested it, slowing and stopping for a moment to take in the view.

This was what she loved, the freedom, taking joy in the small things like a good run, and wide open spaces of her childhood lands. Of course her mother warned her that too much independence was a bad thing, and if she constantly looked like she'd been pulled through a hedge backwards that one day when she felt like settling down, she wouldn't be able to. Marut whinnied at the sky; she knew that if that day came, she'd be liked for who and how she looked, though the hedge remark wasn't often far off.

She grinned to herself, and took off again, down the other side of the hill and towards the Lake. She'd found friends there as a filly, and now she was back after going wandering, she wanted to see if there was anyone that knew her down there.

At the lake's edge, a tall stallion lowered his head gracefully to the water, the sizeable antlers on his head grazing the surface. When he raised his head a moment later, droplets slowly made their way down the grooved surface, sparkling in the bright light of the sun.

Was that...hoofbeats that he heard?

He held his ground, although he did lift one foreleg, pawing at the ground nervously--not all that long ago, he'd have taken off running in the opposite direction at the first sign of someone else...but he'd grown, and was now larger than most of the creatures he encountered--it was something that gave him at least a little bit of confidence.

However, as it was, his nostrils were flared, and his legs were practically atwitch with nervous energy; his fight or flight response clearly at the forefront.

Marut slowed to a gentle canter, not wanting to go tearing straight into the Lake just yet. As she got closer she noticed what seemed like a very, very large deer. She blinked, stopping for a moment because she didn't want to spook it. She liked deer, but she often made them run off because she would run into their midst.

She blinked again, was it a deer? Marut walked over slowly, approaching from the front so that whoever or whatever it was wouldn't be surprised by her approach.
'Hello?' she called, her head tilted to one side as she looked the stranger over.

Espiridion froze, ears pricking up in curiosity as the approaching mare slowed, then spoke. Lowering his forefoot slowly, he straightened, although he remained tense, as if he hadn't quite decided just how far his resolve extended.

"Hello." Espi replied softly, the velvet-soft sound reaching her easily, but not loud enough to extend much further. Mimicking her, he too tilted his head to the side, finally taking a small step toward her, his posture still cautious, but his stance somewhat more firm, as if he'd decided upon sticking around, at least for now.

He then stopped again, flicking his tail, an indicator of his uncertainty--was he supposed to say something else?

He still looked like a deer up close, he looked tense, and Marut made sure that her own body language was of openness, and amiability. She smiled as she glanced up at magnificent crown of antlers on his head.

'Wow,' she began.
'I don't think I've ever seen a Soquili like you, you are a Soquili right?' she asked with a grin. Maybe she'd run into some new species of deer or something? Well, it didn't hurt to ask.

Straightening, Epi flashed a quick grin her way, the expression quickly fading, as if he didn't show it often. It was hard to not be flattered by that sort of reaction. Some of the tension eased out of him, and he gave his head a little toss, causing a lock of pale hair to fall across one eye, allowing him to hide, to a degree, behind it.

"I am, yes." he replied, expression earnest, although somewhat curious--he'd never really thought of himself as all that different.

"I'm Espiridion," he said after silence lapsed for a moment, remembering his manners, even as he looked at her somewhat expectantly.

Marut watched the motion of his head, fixated partly on the antlers still, but also noticing how his mane fell.
'Oh your's falls in your face as well huh? Mine does that allll the time.' she chuckled.
'It gets a little bit annoying.'

She grinned;
'So you are a Soquili! How come you have those marvellous antlers then?' she asked, before remembering herself.
'Oops sorry,' she grinned again, sheepishly this time.
'I'm Marut, please to meet you.'

Epi grinned, the expression barely alighting upon his face before it was gone, replaced with a shy sort've amusement. "It can be, yes." Then he blinked, cocking his head to the side.

"Of course I am! And...well, my father had them, so they never seemed all that strange to me?" thinking about it, neither of his siblings had inherited antlers like their father's, either.

"Marut?" he repeated, nodding as he spoke it aloud, to himself. "The pleasure's mine." he bobbed his head, feeling a little less awkward.

'Well I don't know! It's not like I know every kind of Soquili out there.' Marut chuckled.
'I mean, you could have just been a very large, strange kind of deer. And yeah? Well I think they might be strange to most you'll meet outside your own family, because I've not met anyone like you so far.'

Marut watched the action of his antlers when he nodded, and remembered herself in time to give him a broad, and slightly cheeky smile.

'So what are you up to Espiridion?'

Inclining his head, Epi conceded the point. Looking around at himself, he supposed he could be confused with a...very peculiar looking deer...maybe.

However, he didn't comment further, moving on as she continued. "Really?" Looking up, as if to check that they were, indeed, still there, he probably looked quite comical, before he shrugged, turning back to look her in the eye. "I suppose, you could be right." He really didn't get out, all that much. To him, her extensive, tribal markings were far more unique than his horns.

He smiled back, another tentative, fleeting grin. "Well..not all that much. I happened to be wandering, looking for a particularly green patch of grass I know I saw not too far off, and remembered how clear the water was, here." Not to mention, it was one of those areas that seemed to be overlooked by most--he'd rarely, if ever, encountered others here.

"And you?"

Marut nodded;
'Well I know that I would definately remember meeting another Soquili with antlers, and I might not have gawped so much when I first saw you if I had.' she grinned at him.

'Just y'know, out for a run, stretching the legs in case I meet somebody that wants a race.' she said, only slightly hinting. Racing or sparring were always good icebreakers, if she won or lost it didn't really matter, competing was the thing.

'So do those hurt if they break?' she asked, once more back on the subject of his antlers.

Espi grinned, the expression barely alighting upon his face before sliding into the slightly timid smile he usually wore. "Perhaps." Tossing his head, he eyed her for a moment at the mention of a race. He was rather fond of running--it was something he'd done often as a foal, after all...and with very little provocation.

However, he didn't comment immediately, taken aback by her question, again about his antlers. "I...don't know. I've never attempted it to see..." Furrowing his brow, he wondered if he shouldn't be more worried about that happening, given that he had no idea as to whether it would hurt or not.

"Do you race often?" he finally asked after allowing silence to lapse for a moment."

'Well I don't think you should try, it might really hurt.' Marut said, eyeing them again thoughtfully.

'But are they like when a Soquili has wings, like my mother? She can hurt those, and they are obviously an extra part of her.' she pondered that out loud. It was a mystery, and hopefully it would be left unsolved because she didn't want Espiridion to get hurt just to satisfy her curiosity.

'Oh yes, every chance I get.' Marut nodded, smiling.
'Not everyone I meet is up for a race, so if they are, I seize the opportunity.'

"I'm inclined to agree," he replied, smiling again. "Although when they catch on something, they don't hurt..." He thought about it a moment more, looking pensive. It was interesting--His horns had grown up with him, but had been present as long as he could remember...and yet it had never occurred to him, that it might hurt if they happened to break.

At her enthusiastic reply to his question about racing, his smile became a little more solid--he didn't care very much about winning or losing, but running a race sounded...like fun.

Shifting his weight almost imperceptibly from one hoof to the other, Espiridion's expression shifted slightly, becoming a little more tentative. "Well, in that case, I might be willing to give one a go..." Old habits died hard, it would seem, for all that he'd certainly gotten a lot less uncertain as he'd grown up.

'Hmm. I guess they are going to be a slight mystery then.' Marut laughed.

'I guess we could say they are like hair then? That doesn't actually hurt unless it gets tugged.' she crossed her eyes and poked out her tongue, her expression going back to normal as she got a fit of the giggles at the thought of how she looked doing that.

'I'm going to stop thinking about it! Confuses me too much. We shall race instead, can't get brain strain from doing that.' she looked around the place, searching for two good markers, a definate start and end for the race.
