His parents were somewhere, he was fairly secure in that knowledge. However he hadn't quite taken the time to figure out where he had left them. Oh he knew they would be perfectly safe without them, there was no doubt in his mind in regards to their strength but still... it was unusual for a foal to be quite so free at his age. Parents often seemed to surpress their children or to guard them but he'd found out quite quickly that this stopped him from doing what he wanted to do! While his parents may have attempted to do as the majority of parents did, he had given them the slip (again) and had wandered off aimlessly. Okay so onlookers would call it aimless, but there was a method to his madness and the tiny foal would argue that he knew what he was doing.

He really did too.

Creatures had a habit of underestimating him, assuming that his oblivious behaviour was due solely to his youth. However the foal was a lot more intelligent than he was given credit for. He could draw conclusions that creatures his age shouldn't be able to. Not that he let anyone else figure that out, if they or his parents found out he knew it would lead to a certain amount of awkwardness. Thus he had 'long' ago made the decision to keep this quiet and instead, he expressed himself through music and chose only to watch. It worked out for the best and he positively thrived on the freedom he got from it.

No doubt one of his parents would relocate him again, but for the time being he was permitted the opportunity to explore. In the morning light he could already see the faint outline of other creatures. Some still asleep but others appeared to be stirring. Never one to lack in manners, he wouldn't have even contemplated playing his instrument if they had all been asleep but now they were awake...

Pulling the large leaf from his wing, he propped it between his hooves and then blew upon it...just enough to sound a gentle whistle above the birds.

Sky loved the mornings, no she didn't just love them she adored them. The dew on the leaves and the strange silence that seemed to flood the lands just before everything started to stir and awake. It was then the birds started singing and oh she did love to hear them sing. They always made her happy, their songs to welcome in a new day and all that it would bring. Today she felt it would bring some fun. Then again she always felt that.

The little care free filly trotted about holding her head high, though being a small filly her head being held high wasn't that high in the end. She didn't care being small didn't bother her, it just made her prettier at least thats what she told herself. She wouldn't have any self image issues when she was older that was for sure. It seemed not knowing her father didn't stop her from inheriting his ego however she could control it and being that she was only a foal, she could love herself but not care about it at the same time. It made her life much more fun!

Today she did have a slight purpose. She wanted to have some fun and she wished to find someone to talk to. Most of the time she was happy on her own, she would practice flying, make up some games, do a lot of things really. She wasn't easily bored as she managed to make up anything to keep her interest.

Maybe luck was on herside or something because she saw and heard someone not far off, he had probably heard her coming she was far from quiet, however he had made that strange but nice noise so maybe he hadn't heard her.

"Hello!" She chirped a greeting as she trotted towards him, happy to have found someone to talk to!

His whistling persisted for a while, the sound appearing to be much louder at close range than from a distance. That being said, the sound was still gentle and held a musical quality despite its high pitch. He always found comfort in it and enjoyed any opportunity he was given to play his instrument. However as the spirits would have it, he was not permitted to play his little leaf for long... Today he would be blessed with company just as he had wanted upon waking up.

While he continued to play he took note of the approachnig creature and only stopped in his playing as she revealed herself. At first she seemed to be a blur of colours in the tree, but sure enough within moments she had revealed herself to be something quite different. Like him she possessed wings but they were more like that of a butterfly than of a bird. Having never met a flutter before he found the entire thing to be rather fascinating - he was filled with questions all of which he could barely contain.

Did she beat her wings as quickly as a bug?

Could she fly high?

Did she get shaken easily by the wind?

"Why hello there!" Zhu's ears flicked and he slotted his leaf back into his wing to keep it safe. Adjusting his position he offered a mild smile and continued to stare at the filly. Every now and again he felt a tweak, a desire to ask but he had some manners and knew he couldn't ask them all. Then again, he also couldn't ask them in a logical manner or he would give away his secret!

"...You're a butterfly," he stated at last.

After looking at the foal some more Sky seemed to have a few questions to. Why do you need wings on your head and just above your hooves? Are two wings not good enough anymore? She looked back at her own wings and decided that hers were pretty enough to get away with only having two wings.

"Not really a butterfly... I don't think butterflys look like me. I just stole their wings!" She chuckled a little wondering if it was even possible to steal anyones wings. It would be something she wouldn't mind trying but she loved her wings and never wanted to loose them so would never try and take someone elses.

"You look erm.. strange. Why do you have so many wings?"

The question was innocent and maybe a little rude but then she didn't really have any parents to teach her manners. She had learnt about society herself and so was happy to just be, well, herself. She was only young and didn't mean to offend anyone but sometimes things just came out wrong.

"Oh and what were you doing to that leaf? It sounded really cool!"

She had more questions but she thought two would do for now. Don't want to over do it streaight away now! She didn't want to scare anyone off and she knew she could be too forward with others sometimes.

Zhu was not adverse to a creature being forward with him. In fact, the little colt positively loved questions and word games. If it was a puzzle, Zhu would be the first in line to solve it, if it was a treasure hunt it would be much the same. There was very little that frightened this colt, it wasn't that he was naive but he simply faield to see the point in being scared. Sometimes spooky things did happen and he jumped, but he didn't allow them to plague him and soon found the funny side.

Alas, he had yet to meet a predator yet.

Nevertheless as the filly began to inspect him and thrust a number of questions upon him, the foal seemed to ponder her words. She was a little big to have stolen a butterfly's wings, wasn't she? To have acquired such big wings there must have been huge butterflies in this region! For the sake of curiosity he decided not to immediately assume all butterflies were small, instead he would hunt them down and prove it for himself...just in case the butterflies really were huge enough to have wings like that.

"Oh, didn't it need them?" he asked after a few moments, inspecting her dusty wings curiosly. They were quite unlike his own, they looked soft but leaf thing - the slightest of touches might have wrecked them. Oooh, but something so fragile was a fascinating thing was it not? He smiled amiably as he drew back and sought to answer her own questions... Although he wasn't sure how to answer them in a sufficient manner.

"Strange you say...?" He shook his head, his smile never leaving his equine lips. "My mother has even more wings than I do, she has eight sets! I should think I took after my mother in that regard...no?" He offered up softly. His two other siblings had acquired his father's horn, but through a twist in fate Zhu had been granted the lion tail that lay dormant in his father's blood line. He didn't mind it either, given that he didn't have to tidy it up and it rarely became trapped in undergrowth.

"And you are referring to my pet, yes?" He unfurled a wing and retrieved the leaf from amidst the feathers. He then presented it to the filly before putting it back in and folding his wing for safe keeping. "It plays music, all I have to do is tickle it!" he announced gleefully.

Sky chuckled.

"Butterfly didn't want the wings. The silly thing. He said he looked better without them and so I stole them. Don't deserve to have pretty wings if you won't want them!" She made it up on the spot but that was something she didn't mind. Making things up came naturally to her. It was a talent of hers though her stories were far from realisitic but she wasn't too bothered. They sounded cool to her!

She listened to his answers and looked rather confused.

"Why does she need eight sets of wings? Surely one is enough!" Sky couldn't understand the point in it! Surely it was selfish to keep so many wings to yourself. They should share them out to those who aren't as fortunate as themselves! What is wrong with sharing anyway! Eight sets of wings, that was just greedy, it had to be. She could think of no logical reason why any being would need more then two wings!

His next answer baffled her even more.

"Your pet? It's a leaf!" She wasn't a stupid filly, she knew a leaf when she saw one even if it did make a cool sound.

"You weren't tickling it either. What were you doing?" She had seen him playing it or whatever it was he was doing with it and she was almost certain he had not been tickling it! How do you tickle a leaf anyway?

Logically speaking, his mother required them because of how weighty she was. She wasn't fat, but without the eight wings it was unlikely that she would be able to fly. She wore strange clothing, clad in silks of many colours - there were so many layers that she was weighted down. One pair of wings couldn't support her whereas two could. When it came to those little wings that rested on her head and hooves though...Well, they couldn't really support anyone and their lack of activity pretty much indicated they were there for show more than for utility. Or at least, this was the sort of thing that the foal had noticed in the course of his observations - even the feathers on his head only 'reacted' to his emotions.

...They didn't flutter when he flew.

"She needs eight because four of them don't work," he pointed out at last. For a flutter who didn't carry a substantial amount of weight, it probably would have been difficult for her to imagine why his mother required them. Then again it would be hard for any foal until they saw how tall his mother was and how heavy her strange clothes were! "They just sit there to look pretty, they don't even flap!"

Nevertheless as she made reference to stealing the butterfly's wings he did have to question why a butterfly would reject them. More to the point, what did a butterfly become without it's wings? He knew they'd still have their legs but how on earth would they do anything without something so important? It really was an odd story he'd been told and one that he struggled to understand.

"He may not have wanted them but what if he needed them?" Zhu interjected curiously after a few moments of thoughts. "Sometimes you need things even if you don't like them!" After he had made his point though he did turn his attention to his leaf again and chuckles. He knew it was a leaf, was well aware of where it had come from but it was his pet.

"Oh but I know it's a leaf," he shook his head and tucked it gently into his wing. "And I was tickling it," he insisted.

Sky just chuckled. He was right. The butterfly needed it's wings which was lucky really because Sky was born with these wings and she couldn't get rid of them even if she really wanted to, which she didn't. She loved her wings, they were beautiful!

"Wings that don't work? What?" It seemed she was now more confused then she was before. After all Sky couldn't see why anyone would just want wings to look pretty! It seemed so silly! She couldn't understand and in a way didn't want to understand! It seemed like the most stupid reason ever!

"That seems pointless!"

Sky couldn't see any reason why anyone would want wings for nothing.

"Ah the butterfly will live! I am sure!" She smiled, honestly not bothered about the butterfly that didn't really exist. However she was more interested about this leaf that was apparently a pet and could be tickled.

"You can't tickle a leaf! Leaves can't be tickled!" She was going to stand her ground on this one. Sky could be tickled but she was alive and as far as she was concerned leaves were far from alive. They didn't talk did they?!
PostPosted: Sat Sep 06, 2008 10:57 am

"It better live," Zhu's expression clouded briefly as though he were pained by the possibility of the creature losing its life too. How was he to know that she had made it up? As a mere child he couldn't cotton on to the truth just yet and as a result he was still somewhat naive. He did have moments of clarity and understanding when he could fully grasp the situation, unfortunately now was not one of those times. As a consequence he had rather recklessly believed that this filyl had stolen the wings of a rather depressed butterfly!

...Ah, some day he would learn.

"As for why my mother's wings and some of my own don't work..." he glanced at them briefly and with a great amount of concentration, convinced those on his legs to flutter. "Really I don't know why they don't work, I didn't make me," he pointed out softly. The wistful smile returned to his features and he gave a rather hapless shrug. He was never one to dwell on such strange things, his mind remained open and was rarely troubled too deeply by something he deemed trivial - the question of his own wings was one of these trivial topics.

"And you can tickle a leaf," he emphasised, seemingly becoming mroe aware of the filly's inability to imagine the endless possibilities that nature presented to her. He blew on his leaf to make it sing, every time his mother and father had blew on his belly he had giggled. It was ticklish and logic stated that what he found ticklish would be the same for the leaf. While he wasn't rude enough to say it, the little filly needed to open her eyes and dream just a little.

"But why would it need to talk when it can sing?" he enquired curiously.

This colt was annoying her now. You couldn't tickle leaves and wings that did nothing were pointless and far from pretty. She couldn't see any point in it and she refused to see any point in it. She was much happier to just ignore what he was saying right now.

"Who ever made you was silly." It was a harsh comment for Sky to make as she was normally rather laid back but something about this colt just irritated her and she didn't know what it was but that was as insulting as she would get. She couldn't see the point in wings that did nothing and so it was stupid and silly.

"Leaves aren't alive. They can't talk or sing or be tickled!" It was her final words on the subject and she stamped her front hooves as she said it to make a point, followed by a snort to show her annoyance. Maybe if it had been a different day she would have agreed with him or maybe she did agree with him but refused to admit it, either way today she was right and he was wrong. Then again she always had to be right.

Zhu's ever pleasant smile didn't shift from his lips, even as she insulted him and his parents. He had long since come to the conclusion that there were some who just saw things differently than he did. There was nothing wrong with it, though he often found their views somewhat closed minded. It was their choice and as such, Sky's opinions and thoughts regarding his view on life remained her own. He wouldn't chastise her or fight with her based on such things - it was just silly!

"My mother can be quite silly," he agreed after a few moments of consideration. His mother was after all exceptionally lively, she would chatter continuously to his father. More often than not his father would smile pleasantly, nudge at her cheek and simply encourage the behaviour. His family was definitely a happy one and he was content in this. So, perhaps his mother was a little silly but very few found this to be a direct issue - Sky was the first and even then she didn't seem really angry with him.

"But I'm sorry you feel that way about the leaves, I'm sure they'll forgive you though," he tilted his head to the side and released a soft sigh. "Everything that is, is alive...everything you see... But it's okay if you can't hear them, not everyone can!" He nodded emphatically and shook his tail, coiling it around his leg as he fell quiet. "That's why creatures like me exist..."

She couldn't help but laugh at nearly everything he said now. Leaves would forgive her? They couldn't even talk, or think or anything else so how exactly would they forgive her? She shook her head and just laughed. She really hadn't heard anything like this in a very long time in fact ever. She would get use to it though as there were bound to be other silly creatures out there.

"Leaves don't forgive because they don't think!" She stomped her forehooves. How could this foal be so, well crazy? She really wasn't sure how one could believe that the leaves could talk to you or sing or anything like that. It just didn't make sense.

"Like you? Please say you are the only one." She could hope right? Maybe she should leave before he started telling her the sky and ground could talk too!
