His mother was there - ever watchful of his activities yet prepared to let him explore as he so wished. So long as he stayed within her sight he could play and make whatever discovery chose to come his way. Given his mother's tall stature it wasn't exactly the most difficult of feats to achieve. Combined with his lush coat, his mother rarely struggled to keep an eye on him and if she failed to spot him - well, his father always did. Ah yes, in the last few years the Islagiatt had been enveloped in a bubble of peace and tranquility and so...his parents had at last been allowed to spend the quality time they craved so deeply for! It had resulted in he and his four older siblings of course, but he didn't know that just yet.
Nevertheless, his mother had already warned him that the likelihood of finding many soquili at this time of day would be slim. It had been the decision of both parents to wake up early and to make the trek down from the slopes before dawn. Their logic was that when they reached the plains, they would be able to sleep leaving both their son and them awake enough to enjoy the day. It had been a reasonable one too, even if the tiny foal hadn't permitted either to nap for long upon arrival. Ever excitable, the foal had nudged at his parents until they had at last woken up and succumbed to his nagging.
Unfortunately his mother had been right on the lack of Soquili in the area. Fenghuang had been a little too demanding (even if it was subconciously) to expect that any Soquili would be awake at this time. The Dawn was approaching, he could see the faint traces of light on the horizon but that didn't mean many would be up to watch it! It was a tiny bit disappointing for the colt who wanted nothing more than to play his games and make more friends. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that he would be a social butterfly when he grew up.
He was too excitable not to be!
Alas, the tiny colt quickly came to the conclusion that he would have to exercise this 'patience' that his parents told him of. There were no Soquili awake at the moment but when the sun started to lick the grasses and graze on the tree tops again, then they would wake up. Or at least that's what his mother had told him and she was rarely wrong! For now he could do little more than entertain himself in other ways.
Thus it was with no surprise that he followed the stereotypical line that most Soquili foals did and inspected everything that chose to move at such an early time in the morning. Be it butterfly or bug, he was watching!

Sky's parents weren't that bothered where she was. Ronen, her father didn't even know of her existance and she didn't really know of his. It didn't bother her though, she was more then happy enough to just wander about and be herself. She might have been young but she was independant and didn't really have a care in the world. She was a happy butterfly out to have some fun and find some friends.
She had decided to go on a walk today, walks were good, walks were fun! She could also try her wings again. They really didn't want to work at getting her off the ground but she tried over and over anyway. There was no harm in trying and at this time in the morning there was no one around to see her fail at flying!
She flicked her tail after failing at flying for the hundredth time that morning! Oh how annoying! She wanted to fly already was it really that much to ask? Apparently so. She let out a snort and shook her head, there had to be something else to do before someone saw her attempt to fly and fail yet again! She really didn't like to be embaressed, she was all up for being a social butterfly as long as she didn't make a fool of herself!
Maybe it was her luck that something caught her attention. Her ears flicked as she heard what sounded like another youngster about. She stood pretty still not quite sure what to do, what if she had been seen? What if someone had seen her mess up flying yet again? She could pretend she wasn't there? Somehow though that seemed unlikely, she needed something to do after all!
"Hello?"
Her voice was soft and quiet. She listened not realising just how close she was to a rather large family, something she wouldn't ever really have or understand.

It was unfortunate but a trend that Feng's parents had noticed over the course of a number of generations. Mountain Soquili were notorious for being heavily family orientated, their bonds were unbreakable. They would move heaven and earth to protect all they cared for - would even sacrifice their lives. However, on the plains it seemed that not a day went by when one foal or another would announce they knew nothing of their parents. These foals (and even adults) might crave the affections and attentions of these beings but they didn't always receive it. It was a sad state of affairs but in time the tiny colt would grow to realise just how special the family he came from was.
Islagiatt - a unique herd. He had two wonderful parents, an array or siblings and countless aunts and uncles. He knew every one of them by name and would recognise each instantly. He couldn't ask for more from them - although he did have to admit that he deeply craved to have more friends. His mother was fairly certain that when he matured he would receive the blessings of his older sibling and explore. Some day he would return home - it was inevitable for the Islagiatt...but he would be free to explore as he saw fit.
He would never be summoned. He would never be called. But his home would always be there.
Alas, he was unaware of the gifts he already had bestowed upon him and innocently enjoyed the company of the small creatures in his immediate vicinity. Pursuing the butterflies as they rose, bleary 'eyed' from their slumbers he grew further and further away from his parents. Not yet practiced or somepletely aware of his primal instincts it was with a loud squeak of surprise that he received the tiny filly's greeting.
Tumbling to the side, the foal landed firmly on his rump and could do nothing more than stare at Sky for a number of moments. Composure completely lost (if a foal even had any), he gave a small giggle and shook his head. The dazed expression was soon lost and he quickly bounced to his feet again.
"Hi there!" He announced, ever the enthusiastic babe despite her tentative greeting. "You're not a bug..." he observed at last. "Are you?"

Sky would have once maybe been jealous of anyone who had a huge family but she as so use to going off and being on her own now that it didn't bother her in the slightest. She was happy to play and his comment made her laugh a little. Had he never seen one like her before? Then she could be rather mean.
"I am part bug!"
It was kind of true, she had butterfly wings didn't she? That and she was small, really small. She didn't mind being small though, you could see more from down here, well you could see more then they could being all big and towering over you and so on.
However as she looked up at the foal above her she smiled noticing the swirly marks he had over him. She hadn't noticed them at first. The swirls on his legs seemed to blend in well with his main colour.
"Anyway my name is Sky. Whats yours?"
Names seemed to be a good idea right? After all you can't play with anyone if you don't talk to them first! She liked playing which is why she was more then happy to start making up some story about being half bug. She knew her father was pretty normal, he just didn't want kids. At least thats what Sky figured, she didn't really know. She was not a bug at all but hey whats a bit of fun right?

She couldn't be a bug! There was no way she could be a bug - she didn't even buzz like one. If she was a so-called bug then he wouldbe incredibly disappointed with her lack of 'music'. His expression contorted slightly into one of confusion as he mulled these thoughts over in his head. For his young mind there were various facts that didn't quite add up just yet. It wasn't that he lacked the intelligence, he simply didn't know any better and his parents weren't in his immediate vicinity - thus they couldn't correct him. That being said, his mother was probably more inclined to play along with the filyl and to confuse him anyway.
"Are you really part bug?" he asked again, inching closer to the mare and lowering his head slightly to inspect her. She was incredibly tiny but then again so were Usdia. He'd seen baby Usdia before in his herd, they were really, really small! He was fairly certain they weren't part bug though, the squeaked and giggled in the same way as a normal foal - no buzzing or anything. "I mean it's okay if you are but if you are then why aren't you doing that 'bzzt' sound?" he wagged his little tail and circled the filly at a slow trot.
They were very pretty...those wings.
He'd never seen butterfly wings this close before and never at this size. They seemed to sparkle in the sunshine - his father's glowed but these sparkled. He was fascinated with it but couldn't quite understand how they did or why they were so very slim. If they were so delicate then wouldn't they get broken really easily, would she not be worried about that? Oooh, he had so many questions for the filly if she really was a bug!
"Oh," remembering his manners the foal came to a halt near her head again and grinned. In later years this smile would possess a great deal of charm but for the time being, it was completely and utterly harmless. "I'm called Fenghuang - but everyone calls me Feng for some reason..." he gave a shrug and then giggled. "It's nice to meetcha Sky the Butterfly."

Bzzt sound? This was rather confusing. She didn't even think that butterflies made that kind of sound but he seemed so sure, which was a little strange! She was sure they didn't make that noise, or maybe they did? Was she forgetting something or something?
"Butterflies don't make that noise!" She was certain of it!
"And yes I am part bug!" She chuckled. This was fun!!
She listened to him give his name and scrunched her face a little. That was a strange name, a really strange name.
"Fenghuang"
She tried the name out, it was a little strange and very different to what she was use to that was for sure. She knew simple names but then things were always strange.
"Feng, yep I think I can deal with that a bit better." She chuckled a little.
"It's nice to meet you too swirly Feng!"
She adored his markings the swirls were eye catching and strangely beautiful. She liked pretty things, she was sure it was just part of being herself but they were pretty and she could stare at them for hours. Swirls were just one of those strange things that Sky adored.

"Yes they do!" Feng announced, almost certain that they did. He wasn't aware that he was thinking of flies and bumblebees, they all seemed to merge in to one for him. Bugs were bugs, some were pretty and some were just plain strange. If he was completely honest, he found spiders to be the oddest looking of them all but that didn't mean he wasn't deterred by them. It just made him more curious. "I'm positive they do, when their wings beat super fast they go 'bzzzt'!"
Nevertheless, as she confessed to be part bug his jaw dropped and he stared at the filly in astonishment. Struck dumb by awe, he did little more than to scuttle forward and place his nose against her's. He was considerably larger than her due to her flutter blood, but this didn't seemed to bother him. Admittedly he hadn't quite grasped the concept of being subtle or manners - personal space didn't exist for this colt just yet.
"Wow, you're the first bug-baby I ever met," he confessed softly, drawing away to inspect her wings again curiously. With a wag of his tiny tail he observed them closely before snorting. "Can you fly with them...?" he asked at last, a boyish grin on his lips. It was obvious that he would love to see the acrobatics she could perform.
"And Feng it is - my big bros call me that...'cept for one, but that's okay."

"They do not!" She wasn't going to loose this one. Her wings didn't make any noise when she tried to use them and she was sure it meant that butterflies wings didn't make that noise either. She would know! She was pretending to be half a butterfly anyway!
"Thats not butterflies! Thats bees and wasps and flies but not pretty butterflies!" There she had won. Nothing as beautiful as a butterfly could make such a horrible noise, then again it was possible that they did but if they did she had never heard it so it must be a very strange noise indeed!
The young colt suddenly moving towards her freaked her out a little and she very quickly stepped back as he moved way too close. She was small ok, no need to stare! She didn't say anything at his sudden move towards her but she did make sure she had stepped back far enough that they both had their personal space back. What a strange colt indeed!
At his words she stood proudly. She was also a very pretty bug-baby but she kept that to herself. She was proud of her wings and her looks and she knew she was beautiful. Though she would never mention it. She was sure all flutters were beautiful! If they weren't how could they have any resemblance to a butterfly which was clearly one of the most stunning bugs ever!
"I can kind of fly. My wings aren't really strong enough to carry me properly yet, but I will be able to fly and do all sorts of things!" She fluttered her wings as she spoke, a little annoyed that she couldn't fly yet. She could hover a little but that was about it.
She just nodded as he spoke of his big brothers. His family sounded huge.

Huge was an understatement for the poor foal. His family was beyond large with many different soquili involved in the upbringing of each child that entered it. In Fenghuang's case he had five brothers and two sisters, that being said he also had a ridiculous number of cousins as well. Trying to recount them all tended to make the colt a little bit dizzy, there were just so many! That being said he wouldn't have changed anything for the world, there were so very few Soquili who could say they had quite the same support network that he did.
"Hrm, you promise they don't go 'bzzt'?" he eyed the filly curiously and then watched closely as she began to flutter her wings. Much to his surprise they didn't make the sound and he had to admit defeat. Clearly she knew far more than he did about bugs given that she was a bug-baby. It brought a small smile to his face, he wasn't often proven wrong but then again... He hadn't really explored that much either. It just made it all the better that a real live bug had shown him the right thing!
Wagging his tail from side to side appreciatively, the foal bounced from hoof to hoof. Releasing a squeal as she hovered, he quickly circled around her to inspect the fact that she was floating. Now that was something even his two winged brothers couldn't do! Even his sister could float like that - they could fly really high but they couldn't be still.
"Ooooh, how do you do that?" he enquired at last, coming to a halt nearby her again. "My brothers and sister can't float like that - your wings must be super special!"

"I promise!" She chirped happily.
She found it rather amusing that he was so curious about the fact that she was hovering though she had to come down quite quickly. It was tiresome trying to keep that up for so long without resting. One day she would fly properly, one day! At least thats what she kept telling herself.
"I don't know how I do it, I just move my wings." She answered him though was really curious as to why his siblings couldn't do it.
"Your brothers and sisters can't? Why? I thought anyone with wings could." She honestly believed they could, after all she was sure that her brother could but then he had the same kind of wings as she did. Strange, it was really rather strange.
She fluttered her wings again a little but stayed on the ground, yep she couldn't understand how someone with wings couldn't do that. It was surely the normal thing to do!
"What kind of wings do they have?" She was curious now.
