Hi. Anyone here like killifish? The peculiar thing about these fish is a lot of them live in bodies of water that dry out in certain seasons every year. So they just lay their eggs in the substrate, the water dries up, the fish die, but the eggs hatch when the water returns.

Which means that you can keep their eggs out of water for weeks or even months depending on the variety. I got some killifish eggs from Thailand about a week ago. They're Nothobranchius Rachovii Beira 98. They're bright orange and blue. You can see an example here. http://www.killi.co.uk/SpeciesDetails.php?ID=476

=) My fry are about five days old now. They're doing okay, looks like.

Pic from a couple days ago. Not easy to see, I know.

=) Thanks.

Yep. The fish are doing fine. I think I had about a dozen hatch and 10 are still alive. The two I lost were "belly-sliders" who didn't manage to fill their swimbladders.

Blurry picture but mostly just to demonstrate that they have gotten bigger. They eat a lot of baby brine shrimp now. I'd like to try to wean them onto something that's not alive, but I'm still working on it... I think they might be growing a little on the slow side for a fish that generally lives less than a year.

Wow they grew quite a bit!
Hmm, I used to give my baby angelfish some paste-like fishfood from a tube. I forgot the name but it came from the brand Tetramin.
With my guppies I just fed them hardboiled eggyolk and and peas in the first month and gradually went over to flakefood.
I've always been horrible with brineshrimp, so my fish have to make due with dead food, and the occasional bloodworm.

I don't think they are that slow in growing. guppies take about half a year with me to reach full maturity, and I wouldn't call them long livers. Though they do live longer then Kilifish. Maybe they need a bigger bowl? Or more sunlight and current?

This kind of fish doesn't like to have very much current but they probably could use a bigger container. I've heard that with many kinds of fish, including these, those babies that mature quicker will stunt the growth of the ones that don't mature as fast. ^^' They release some kind of hormone. Having more water would probably help with that. I've got a five gallon waiting for them and I probably might as well move them over to it once I clean up the muck of the plant that died in it.

And thanks, -part time ninja-. They're doing well. They seem to be pretty robust.

Ohh... Hey. They're eating some crushed-up flakes now, actually. I guess they just needed to be hungry enough. I hadn't restocked my brine shrimp cup recently so they didn't get too much to eat today.

lol Oh yes. I had those when I was a kid and I failed too. I never even saw anything look like it hatched. Too bad too, since triops are pretty cute when they get bigger.

(Edit: As for killies, that is.) Most sellers seem to have a guarantee that at least some your eggs will at least hatch, but nothing to say they will survive.

If I had adult fish I would probably be able to offer you some eggs. Heck. Maybe in a few months I might be able to. They're actually supposed to spawn pretty readily.
