It was a warm afternoon, that was for certain. The angel was taking a walk in the park, her usual spot. She was still sore from Blackfell's disappearance, though it had been several weeks now. Nanaki, though...

The mysterious baby whom the strange man named Walker delivered on her doorstep, and not so long after her friend Ever had described him to her.

Not that she would have turned down an abandoned baby.

She held the little furred child in her arms, wrapped in the thinnest blanket she could find in her house. He was sweating in the heat with his fur, though he was looking about avidly, his one gold eye open, the other shut by the strange scar.

"Weekend" had taken on an abrupt new meaning for Azrael. Just as he'd begun to settle into the routine of working during the weekdays and exploring the towns of Gaia on the weeknights and weekends (where he could fit such explorations between drinking binges, anyway), everything had abruptly changed. This now was only his second weekend since Peach had arrived, but he was already mourning the loss of free time. He hadn't even fully mapped Aekea in his head, and now he was finding himself making trips to Barton so that Peach could enjoy the fresher air and more friendly people... it was like walking around blindfolded! Every time he saw a little sidestreet, he itched to know exactly where it went- but with a baby to look after, how could he investigate it?

"Oh, stop being so selfish," he was promptly scolded. Emiree was very content with affairs, unlike her grumbling companion. She loved children; she'd always imagined that she would have a sweet little girl, one day. Certain events had made that dream quite impossible, of course... but Azrael being the caretaker of Peach was, in some ways, an acceptable replacement. There were more than a few times, especially when Azrael was being hopeless and Peach was upset, that Emiree knew there was no crime she would convinced just to make it all more real, to be more than a judging voice and invisible presence. That wistful dream was saddening beyond words, too painful to contemplate for more than a few seconds at a time- but even to feel that sense of connection and family, the strongest she'd felt for anyone other than Azrael in the longest time, was enough to make her feel alive. Ironic as the term might be.

Sighing, she looked down into the pink, frilly buggy that Peach was enjoying the day from. "Look at her!" She told the white-haired man, smiling. "Have you ever seen such a happy, beautiful girl?"

Abidingly, Azrael halted the little procession in order to steal a peek into the covered stroller.

Mmph... something was blocking her light? Peach had been lightly dozing in the afternoon sun, but the sudden eclipse brought her to blink open her eyes and squint at what it was that caused the darkness.

"Aa!" She exclaimed cheerfully- she should have expected, it was Azrael! As delighted as if it were a friend she hadn't seen in weeks, Peach stretched out her arms and giggled up at him, waiting expectantly.

... Oh god, she's being cute again, Azrael noted, a strange amount of dismay mixing with warm amusement.

It wasn't really like him to devolve into baby-talk, but after a quick glance around ascertained that there was only one other woman carrying her pet dog through the park, he risked a smile back down at the princess. "Did I wake you up?" He asked, not quite so devoid of dignity as to let his voice turn into a high-pitched coo. Carefully, he reached into the stroller and lifted the girl up, much to her delight. This was as good a place as any to take a play-break, anyway.

Nikomas unfurled one of her wings, bending it above her to provide some slight shade for herself and the baby. She knew he wouldn't sunburn, or at least hoped he wouldn't... She was grateful for the child, but she knew nothing about caring for a furred child. Rysha's daughter Tryst was part snake, but she adored the heat while Nanaki was sweating, though it didn't seem to bother him overly much.

She could hear him panting softly, and paused in her walk to carefully unwrap the blanket from him, letting his short little tail hang down, the tiny bit of glowing fur, looking so much more like a flame then skin... She cradled him in her arm, putting the blanket over her other shoulder.

There weren't many others present in the park, though she noticed a man with a vividly colored baby strolled, kneeling in front and talking to a little baby girl, with bright gold hair and an adorable smile.

The angel couldn't resist a little smile coming to her lips, and she approached the man, Nanaki in her arms. "What's her name?"

It certainly was hot out... As the angel had noted, it did bother Nanaki slightly, but his fur was still thin so it wasn't too bad, though the baby found the sweat slightly uncomfortable. Especially because it was difficult to wipe away while held in Nikomas's arms.

Shaking himself much like a canine, the small pony-tails hanging behind his ears clicked, the beads hitting against each other and the small blades behind his ears. His mother had started to talk, to a dark skinned man with a baby stroller. There was a little girl inside, and Nanaki could't help but try and peer over his mother's arm, his gold eye curious as he looked at her.

Azrael turned to face the woman a little more quickly than was probably called for, scanning her with a cool, precise gaze. She seemed friendly, just like nearly everyone else on Gaia; there was no reason that he shouldn't answer in the same manner, right?

He didn't quite smile, but his passiveness was at least made less serious as he nodded his head in acknowledgment. "Peach," he replied, making an effort to soften the curt clip of a voice he was accustomed to responding in.

It was only after he'd answered that he seemed to notice there was anything less than human about the woman he was speaking to. His eyes flicked to the wings behind her, and widened in something resembling alarm. Did... did Gaia have angels, and if so, why in the hell would one be speaking to him?!

"Oh, my," was all that Emiree could comment on the unique stranger they were meeting. Instinctively, she found herself retreating behind Azrael, only examining Niko from over his shoulder. It wasn't that she felt threatened by her, but... well, it was certainly a strange sort of creature to encounter!

Oh... oh. It was furry. Peach hadn't gotten a chance to see much more than that yet, but her first impression of Nanaki was that he was bright red, and furry. Probably very soft and friendly and nice. "Baab?" Her face lit up with anticipation, and she wiggled her hands up towards the other babe. He looked like fun, and she wanted to play!

Nikomas smiled as the man responded, and she knelt down next to the stroller, holding Nanaki in both arms while at the same time closing her wing back to her side with the other one. The little girl, Peach, was undeniably cute. Vivid, open blue eyes and an lovely smile.

"She's absolutely adorable." She said, looking back up at the man with another smile, her violet eyes lighting up. The angel adored all children, whether they were hers or not.

Nikomas felt a slight presence besides the man and his daughter, more then likely a spirit, and she turned her head to look at the general area that Emiree took up. "Hullo there, Lady Spirit."

"Gaah?" Nanaki tilted his head curiously at the sound the baby girl made, and in response wiggled over Nikomas's arms, waving his little hands towards hers, his fingers managing to brush hers a few times. Turning his head back to look at his mother, his yellow eye had a look of pitifulness in it.

"Daah?" He asked, waving his hands down, obviously wanting to get closer to the little girl, Peach.

Smiling at the baby boy, Nikomas looked back up at the man. "Do you mind?"

... She'd been addressed? Emiree didn't know whether to be shocked, amused, elated, or concerned. It would make sense, she supposed, that an angel could recognize her presence. She didn't know what this would mean, or what Nikomas' intentions would turn out to be, but... but she was an angel. How was the ghost supposed to react?

"... Good day, my lady," she answered with a habitual curtsy, wondering if there was any more formal way she was supposed to address the woman.

For his part, Azrael was simply stunned out of action. The most that he could do was numbly nod his permission to the woman and step clear to give her access to Peach. He'd heard stories, ever since he was a child, of angels blessing the babies of royalty in the cradle. And for this to happen, here and now, especially given Walker's ominous take care of the Princess- his doubts of the strange man's credibility were vanishing on the spot. Even if there was some different connotation of angels here than on his own world- were there?- the combination of events, it was beyond disbelief!

Nanaki's baby babblings was just the topping on the cake, shattering one more preconception he'd dared to cling to. Mentally reeling, the man tried to recompose himself and make some sense out of the situation, removing himself as much as possible from it in the meanwhile.

Aha! They were going to get to play after all! Thrilled with this turn of events, Peach worked herself as best she could to sit at the very edge of the buggy, staring up at Nanaki and giggling in anticipation. She'd spent all her time recently playing with either Azrael or Gil- or, worse, not playing with anyone at all when they were busy. She was starving for interaction of those her own age, and since all her old playmates were no longer available, the only answer was to make new ones. Would Nanaki turn out to be proper playmate material, she wondered? She hoped that he would!

Nikomas could barely see a faint shimmer from the ghost, but upon frowning in concentration she saw the figure coalesce into view, and she smiled, nodding in return as opposed to curtsying. Already balancing on the balls of her feet, she instead gave off the impression of a curtsy.

She couldn't help but feel a small laugh come up, though. "Oh, please, don't call me lady. I'm Nikomas, you can just call me what everyone else does." Nikomas said with a friendly smile. Noting the man's apparent surprise and shock, though she wasn't quite certain what had set him off, the gave him an encouraging look, and mentioned "There's a bench over there, sir, if you would like to sit down...?"

Nanaki made gleeful little sounds, sounding very close to delighted growls, as Nikomas gently set him inside the walker with Peach. Once he was sitting, he looked at the girl curiously, leaning forward on his backside to peer into her blue eyes. "Naah?" He asked; what exactly he meant was uncertain, but it definitely appeared that he liked her so far.

"My mistake then, Miss Nikomas," Emiree replied, sounding sincerely entranced. Who would have imagined the day that she, of all people, would be conversing with an angel! Were she feeling any less rusty, socially, she would have been tickled pink; all that she could manage for now was a nervous sort of awestruck.

... She's so... normal, Azrael thought hesitantly. He'd complained, time and time again, about how strange and beyond reality a place Gaia was- but this was definitely the experience to top it. Not someone handing him a baby princess from thin air, no; running into an angel on the street and listening to her make... chit-chat with Emiree.

"Azrael," the ghost murmured carefully to the musing man, "introductions...?"

Of course; he was responsible for social nicieties. Why, he couldn't imagine- Emiree had ten times his social grace, even as an intangible spirit. But if she asked, he would obey.

"I'm fine, thank you," he answered, trying to sound as pleasant as possible (and failing to a great degree, only managing to seem bemused). "My name is Azrael d'Chevalier, Miss Nikomas. My companion-" God, what he wouldn't give to have a solid hand to pat now, just for some sort of reassurance or, or something- "is the Honorable Miss Emiree Lucas."

"A little less honorable now, perhaps," she wryly suggested, a joking smile on her face. "It's very much a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

Ohh, the puppy was all hers to play with now? Sheer delight! The funny sounds that Nanaki made brought Peach to happy laughter quickly, her eyes dancing cheerfully in time with her glee. Leaning forward, she waggled a hand near Nanaki's face, blabbing an inquiry- if she could pet him, please, because his fur looked oh so soft and he seemed very nice and would probably let her?

Nikomas smiled as the man, Azrael, introduced themselves, nodding after both name was said and committing them to memory. "It's a pleasure to meet you." The woman said, her violet eyes warm, friendly and sincere as she spoke.

Shifting slightly, she slowly stood up, stretching out her legs a little after the squat made her knees cramp up a bit. "So what brings you three to the park today? Little Peach?" She asked curiously, glancing down again at the babies, who seemed to be getting along well enough.

Nanaki's response was to shake himself, mainly his torso and head, like a wet dog, a little giggle and burble of laughter rumbling up from his throat. His hair beads clicked against the stubby little knives as he shook his head.

When he stopped, his hair was looking as mussed as a mini faux-hawk could look, the small bits in the front falling in his eyes. "Groww!" The baby leaned forward again with this friendly word, his gold eye echoing Peach's delight.

Azrael nodded, but said nothing.

Which was just as well, because Emiree plenty capable of talking enough for the pair of them. "A little girl can't be cooped up all day, after all!" She chimed in happily, growing more and more at ease around the angel. "Azrael complains and complains about it, but I insist, so she gets out for a walk just as often as we can accommodate it." Emboldened, the ghost stole a peek into the stroller to smile over the two children.

"Is it the same for you, Miss Nikomas?" She questioned politely. Despite initial appearances, it seemed quite clear that Nanaki was no odd little puppy dog; on the contrary, he seemed like quite an intelligent little child, or at least every bit as much as the princess herself was.

Peach was clearly highly entertained by her new companion. Was there anything quite like him that she'd come across in her life? No, nothing that she could think of. This was on all levels a new and exciting experience for her, and given that she had been princess of her own kingdom, with all the privileges that came with it, that was certainly something.

And how was she to respond to the wild antics of her new, wild friend? Why, in the same manner, of course!

"Rrrowr!" The princess cried back gleefully, tossing her head in a manner far more awkward than Nanaki's natural fur-shaking, mirroring the red-furred creature in bedheadness by the time she'd stopped in order to grin and laugh at him again.

The angel smiled, a small touch of sadness tinging her expression, before it was gone in a flash, so fast one might not have noticed it. "I like bringing Nanaki out, so he can explore something beyond the house. It helps me keep my mind off things, as well." Niko said, a fond smile aimed down at the little lion-dog-boy as he played with little Peach.

"I just like taking walks out in the sunshine, whether or not I've got Nana strapped along." She said, turning back to the ghost with a small grin.

Nanaki let out a little mewl of laughter, leaning back and clapping his hands in delighted excitement. Her mussed up blond hair was amusing for him; it was almost the same yellow as his eyes, which certainly entertained him.

"Rrruuf!" He barked, sounding like a mix between a dog and a cat that was slightly in denial of it's species. Nanaki's little tail started wagging, the tiny glowing fur, almost like a flame, brushing back and forth and warming the blankets.

"Ahh, I can understand that," Emiree replied jovially to Nikomas' sentiments of enjoying the sunny days. "It seems like this world is built just to make sure everyone's stuck inside on the days they most want to be out. This is the first time I've gotten to see the sky at noon all week!"

"That's not true," Azrael shook his head, rejoining the conversation. "Tuesday, remember? There was a lunch meeting...."

The ghost threw her gaze heavenwards, as though begging some deity for patience. "Of course, how silly of me!" she answered scornfully with a shake of her head. "We were outside for all of thirty seconds, and then the taxi came... and then outside for thirty seconds more...."

"We had an outside table," Azrael defended himself, seeming irrationally bothered by the spirit's criticism. It didn't help that she only laughed at this reply, too.

Oh. My. Stars.

He had a tail! Peach had failed to notice it before, but it was entirely too obvious now. Her face went serious as she realized the mysterious appendage existed, focused on following its waving motion. Now that was impressive! She tried to think of what she knew that had tails. Yoshis had tails... was that all?

Well, now it was Yoshis and Nanakis. "Daaghaa," she exclaimed, signaling as best she could to the object leading down from Nanaki's back. It must be fun to have a tail; like having a toy attached to your butt, following you around all day!

Nikomas held back a small titter of laughter, holding her hand in front of her face to hide her smile at the bickering pair. "You two certainly do get along with each other." She stated with another open grin.

"So are you two always together, or are you able to seperate at all?" The angel asked curiously; sometimes the spirits that lived on would "possess" someone, and not be able to leave their side. She couldn't quite tell if that were the case here or not.

"What sort of work do you do, Azrael?" She asked, after the mention of a business meeting.

A bubbly smile came to Nanaki's face as he realized she was interested in his tail, and he leaned forward, little feet under his stomach, and held his tail above his back, the end wagging slowly in the air.

"Taaiii!" He said proudly, not quite having the hang of the word.

"Ah... the former, more than the latter," Emiree answered, hesitantly. Azrael would have normally scolded her for answering any questions about the nature of their bond, no doubt- but, in the first, she didn't usually have anyone to talk to, and in the second- Nikomas was an angel. He could be paranoid with anyone else, but there were limits to how much of his suspicious nature Emiree would put up.

She needn't have worried, though. Azrael wouldn't have dared to doubt the angel a moment. Nikomas could have told him that he could reach the moon by foot, and he would have only been able to ask, in a startled voice, which way he should start walking.

"My work?" He echoed. "Ah... I design for a manufacturing company in Aekea." Was that enough of an answer? It seemed too short, but he liked being more to the point like that. And when someone was trying to get information about his life, thrice so.

Emiree, for one, clearly thought that the answer needed elaboration. "The company's called NinStar," she informed Nikomas. "They make supplies for 'ninjas', I believe...? Azrael is a very talented tinkerer," the spirit favored the man with a smile, "and has been doing very good work for them. His boss speaks very highly of him, at the very least."

Would he be offended if she made a grab for it, Peach wondered?... it didn't seem worth the worry. Inhibitions could wait until she was older- for now, she wanted to inspect that tail more closely!

It wasn't a very graceful motion. She'd thought to move closer so that it would be easier to reach for the tail, but she managed to fall over on her side instead. Undaunted, the baby began a sort of squirming side-wiggle, inching closer to Nanaki with a burst of trouble-making laughter. She was gonna get it, she was almost there...!

Nikomas nodded as the ghost agreed slightly; she used to work with spirits back in her own world, but had never quite understood them as well as she should have.

She felt a smile come up though as Emiree affixed the word 'ninja' to the company Azrael worked for. "Ninjas? My other son would like them then-" The angel said, but she cut herself off mid word with a painful look, before shaking her head.

"I alternate from working at home and in a friend's studio in Barton. Charms and magic shields." She said with a shrug, her black wings rustling slightly with the movement.

He couldn't help but burble in laughter, waving his little paws as the Peach girl tumbled over. She was certainly entertaining! The fact that she was his size only made it better. Aqua was a couple times larger then him, though just as amusing, but craning his head backwards was a difficult motion for him.

Nanaki obligingly ceased his squirming so she could get closer, a big, happy grin on his face. "Groow!" Maybe she was trying to see his tail? He flopped it forward, wiggling it in the air in front of Peach.
