Escape. That was all Alexiel thought of, all he would allow himself to think of. The strain of his muscles, the rolling power as they propelled his small body forward, the occasional wing beats that fed his speed. Anything to get away, farther and farther away. Away from her, away from them, away from all the the lies and the hurt. As far away as he could get from the stinging words of that poisonous mare. Words that hurt worse than the rough impact of his soft hooves on the unforgiving ground, the pain in his throat and lungs as he gasped for air, and far worse than the burn of acid in his overworked muscles.

Words that he didn't even know the truth of. It could be, that that mare had just been lying, though, even as he told himself that it seemed unlikely. Alexiel didn't even know her! What had he ever done, to deserve such cruelty? It didn't make sense. Never before, had he encountered an individual with such...evilness. Someone who seemed intent on breaking him.

Adopted. The word rang in his mind, the hiss of the mare stabbing it into him. Was he really? Had she been telling the truth? Alexiel had to admit, the facts added up, how he didn't really look like either of his parents, how his traits were so different, how he had no siblings. It had never really mattered, before. But she had said that he had been a replacement. Just used, because his mother -or, not his 'real' mother- had been lonely, depressed. That he was disposable, and as soon as she had gotten her fill of motherhood again, she would desert him. That she had found him trembling in his basket, covered in blood.

That couldn't be true. None of it could be true! So then...why did he run? He didn't even know. Maybe Alexiel needed proof, needed proof that the mare was wrong, that he wasn't replaceable, that he wasn't some useless colt. As he thought this, his muscles gave out, and he collapsed on the ground in a shuddering heap. He needed someone, anyone to show him that she was wrong, because how would he not remember? If his true parents had died. That would be...horrible. That would make Alexiel a horrible soquili, to forget his parents like that. No it couldn't be true.

Could it?

Wyrm loved moments like these. His green eyes glowed eerily in the shadows of the dark trees. Though he was in his horse form, he felt very much like the wolf hunting his prey. The little 'rabbit' darted by presenting the perfect opportunity. The rabbit in this case was an angeni foal that looked rather familiar but now was not the time for thoughts. Each second wasted was further distance between him and his next meal. Without another thought, the Skinwalker chased after the foal.

It was easy to gain speed. The foal was little and Wyrm's claws dug deep in the ground to give him that extra push as he ran. The scent of the foal teased him invitingly. Images flashed in his head.

Memories.

He had seen this foal before.

A twisted smile formed on his face and the hunger faded from him. Like a foal gifted a new toy, Wyrm darted forward, eager to play with the foal. It wasn't long after that the foal had collapsed to the ground. This was almost too easy.

"I was going to eat you up, little rabbit, but alas, I find that I cannot." he called from behind, taking the time to walk around the foal so he could stare down into the tiny face. There was no further question, this WAS the foal he had let live some time ago. He had peeked into the basket. He had made sure that one of the foals lived while the others, and his parents were brutally killed. One had to remember. One had to stand witness. It was that need that spared the foal then and would spare him again today.

Of course, that didn't mean he would go unharmed.

A faint scent on the wind, and the colt's head whipped up. He recognized it, dim as it was. The smell of blood. Alexiel's head looked around fearfully, unaware, almost, of the massive black skinwalker until the creature was upon him. As Wyrm spoke, the foal's head looked up, already pale face blanching at the sight. It was one bad thing after another it seemed. Of course it would be. He should have expected. Why wouldn't it be ccompletely plausible for a giant skinwalker to track him down?

It was a dark creature, with green eyes that glowed eerily. Unnaturally. What was that it had just said? Called him a 'little rabbit,' but said it wouldn't eat him? Normally, that may have been taken as a good thing, but one glance at the soquili who stood in a wolf's hide, and Alexiel knew that either way, it was bad.

"I...I don't know what you mean." He whispered shakily. So the skinwalker wasn't going to eat him? Then again, for all Alexiel knew the great black creature could have some sick pleasure in tormenting his meals.

Terrified, his eyes roamed, looking for a way out.

"You don't remember do you? Oh, maybe this might help some," he teased and within a few short moments, the large stallion began to change into the form of a scruffy black wolf.

"I was in this form, after all, when I killed your family. Oh, your mom was a screamer. Even now I can hear her echoing in the back of my mind. You don't forget a scream like that. You see, I saved her for last. I let her watch her mate -- that would be your father -- die first. Then I killed her babies, all save for one. That's when I killed her. By then she was yearning to die. I simply gave her what she wanted."

The wolf grinned maliciously, baring all of his razor sharp fangs. He began to circle the foal before turning to speak again, "I kept you for three days. You stayed in that basket, not knowing for sure what was going on around you. Just a wee little thing. For three days, you slept while I continued to consume your family. Delicious they were. Oh, I thought about eating you too. My paws practically ached with the need to shred your basket to pieces but no, you had a more important role. You had to stand witness to the act committed. You had to remember. It's really quite ironic. Do you even remember? Did you forget why you were left alive? I wonder if I should kill you now since you made the entire thing worthless but then again.. now you know. Now you can remember. Do you remember? Think hard, little one. Do you remember the screams? The begging? Do you remember the smell?"

The wolf was enjoying himself immensely. Every so often, he would mock n** at one of the foal's legs. "If you remember, I guess your life still has value to me. If you don't, I humbly invite you to join your family. It's been a long time but I'm sure something of them remains in the pit of my belly. Tell me boy, do you want to see your mommy again? Or do you want to take a hint and fly away before I change my mind?"

There was another unpleasant sound, and Alexiel's head whipped back, watching fearfully as the stallion changed into a wolf. Though not just any wolf, as he had been not just any stallion. A monsrous wolf, far larger than any had the right to be, with angry scars marring it's entire body, and those eerie green eyes. There was something familiar about them, now that he thought about it. Now that he had time to do anything other than be paralyzed by fear. Perhaps the creature’s transformation had startled him out of his shock, and now that it had, an even more unpleasant sensation pulled at him. Those eyes...Alexiel shivered. They were too bright, too hungry, to knowing to be real. To be anything more than something dreamt up from his imagination. Or his memory.

Something ripped through him, a painful, tearing sensation. Like a faint pull at his memory. Only it wasn't just a pull, it was as if it grabbed him with razor sharp claws, pulling and scraping at him as it dragged the rough walls down. Alexiel gasped, shuddering as the pain, nearly tangible, ripped through him. But it didn't stop. The voice of the wolf pierced through the pain, adding another level all it's own. Something surfaced. A sound, a scream. At first he thought it might have been him, but Alexiel’s mouth was firmly shut in a thin line. Not his, but someone’s. Someone not here, someone who lived only in the memory the voice of the wolf had called up. But a scream, nonetheless. The scream of someone he knew, somehow.

He whimpered as the wolf’s voice ran on, cringing back from the stinging words, each one piercing like a blade. With each word, the deeply buried part of his mind ached, struggling to get out. But no, it mustn’t, it couldn’t. He couldn’t let it out, because it couldn’t be true. What this wolf was saying, it was impossible! How could he have belonged to a different family? How could he have forgotten that family? To forget...that would be despicable, horrendous. No, it wasn’t possible. He had a mom, a dad, a family. Despite the fact that he had always wondered why he didn’t really look like either of his parents, they still were his parents, right?

“It...can’t be true. You must have mixed me up! I have...” he trailed off as the words Neva had told him came shooting back. How he was adopted, how his mother had found him, basket surrounded by pools of blood, how he hadn’t talked at first, had only watched with haunted eyes. He had tried to convince himself she was lying, that she only wanted to be mean to him. But this wolf...the way it stared at him hungrily, and the words that it sent echoing through his head. They seemed to mean more, to hurt more. To make images and scents surface that he had never thought of before. He heard the words of the wolf, and one part of him was desperate to run. But it was there, the smaller part, that wanted to know, the part that he tried to suppress was surfacing with every second the wolf stared at him. He didn’t want to remember, didn’t want to believe.

"You're lying." Alexiel choked out. "You have to be lying." But the words were underlayed with a tone that sounded a little to desparate, a little to much like he was pleading. Hoping that the wolf was lying to him.
