You have to start somewhere man, I'm sure that in China and the former Soviet Union the communist party at one point had 10000 members.

True, but they also didn't fade away then come back like this either.

Are the old school outfits required? If so, I might have to switch parties just for the clothes.

Yeah, but my point is the fact that they aren't on a Ballot yet, so they aren't that big in my books.

Surely, but still compared to other parties, it is not that big. 10,000 is a Start, and I heard the whigs were making a semi-comeback like in '06. Whigs were the Original Conservative Party in the United States, until the GOP came and absorbed them.

Yeah, but my point is the fact that they aren't on a Ballot yet, so they aren't that big in my books. But being on a ballot does not make a party big either. It does, you need about 250,000 (I think or around there) Signatures to even be put on the ballot. And, 250,000 is just for one state to be put on a ballot. They said 10,000 members, in 12 states: 10,000/12 = 833.3 members in that state. also they got people that aren't even members they are only 1/3 Whig. What is the other 2/3? j/k Also, 10,000 people nationwide is relatively small. Seeing how the nations population is like 305,000,000; 10,000 is a drop in the bucket.

Yes, the whigs are doing fairly well for a minor party thats just starting off, but one must understand that other, more established third parties have probably paved the way. Nader brought attention to the Green party and third parties in general in with the Y2K election results. Before that, Ross Perot proved that a third Canidate can influence the race. With the immense dissatisfaction of the American public towards both major parties, more and more are becoming Independents. Once they break out of the cycle of Party loyalty, they're more prone to looking at third parties. Also, most of the Whig party is composed of Military personell, which means they are specifically geared to that group. Thats probably enough to get them a few members, but they could easily become little more than a Veterans lobbyist group if they aren't careful.
Oh, btw, nice to see someone else here goes to TPW. I sometimes post there under the name of Free Al. Normally though, I try to stay out of the "discussion" that takes place in those blogs.

I keep seeing this on this guild and it's a point that really pisses me off, just because you're part of a party doesn't mean you must vote for that party. It's so annoying when people say they don't vote along party lines and act like it's such a big deal. I'm a registered Democrat but I'd vote for any Conservative if they were the best choice for the country. People seem to aline themselves with a party mostly because they either want to be someone or the idea of being Independent doesn't sound good. I know the only reason I joined a party is to influence choices more as in during primary elections. That and the fact I plan to run for office which would be helped if I was a part of a major party. Parties aren't some club with strict rules that you must follow like "always vote for your party." It's ideas like that which lead to elections like 2004 where people outside the parties voted against a candidate instead of for. The wouldn't have the "courage" to vote third party because the stigmatism is that is a wasted vote. There is no such thing in this country as a wasted vote, the face you voted outside the normal two candidates shows that you dislike what the major parties are doing and you want change.
