Story line! Storyline It all started one stormy night. Jessie was just a small girl then, and had gotten lost and terribly frightened on the small ranch she lived on. She scrambled in a fright, ever to eager to get out of the woods, which had just minutes ago looked so appealing to explore through. She just found herself more and more lost as she tried to make her way out, unable to recognize where she was.
Finally, she found a small clearing, and was stunned to find a calm waterfall within the pouring rain. There was alight behind the steadily falling waters of the small waterfall. Deciding she was either dying or hallucinating, neither of which were any good, or more hopefully, there was a person seeking shelter there, she darted into the confines behind the waterfall.
When she was safely hidden in the cave, she found that there wasn’t a person, or a soul, in sight, and there wasn’t really a light, for that matter. There were gems in the wall, glowing freely and softly. Something possessed her to touch them, pressing her fingertips to them gently, and though she was expectant for some reason, nothing happened. She waited a while behind the cascading water, a bit impatiently, expecting for either the rains to cease or for someone to come from the other end of the tunnel. Neither happened, and minutes turned to hours.
Finally, because boredom was growing on her, she noticed that, though she was thoroughly drenched to the bone, she wasn’t cold. Warm drafts of lofty air floated towards her. Having grown tediously bored, she got up to explore, heading down the lighted pathway. It was relatively straight, and it was not getting any higher or deeper by the slant of the earth.
When the cave finally ended, she strode out into an open clearing, filled with hip length grass that swayed to the same breeze that had been in the cave. There was a sparkling stream falling from an identical waterfall, a twin copy of the one of the other side. She instantly noticed that it wasn’t raining, and with a jolt, that it wasn’t past noon here, while it was midnight in her world.
When the tall grass rustled in front of her, she took an involuntary step back. A small wolf appeared in front of her, timid but its knowing, curious eyes studied her. Its jaws opened into a toothy grin.
And then it spoke.
Jessie only could watch in amazement as it caked to someone in her own tongue.
“Uncle Dren, Uncle Dren. There’s another one!”
Seconds later, a massive wolf appeared. It blinked, taking Jessie in slowly with a contemplative gaze, and then it smiled pleasantly.
“Hello, dear. My name is Dren.” Jessie stared, still amazed, and the wolf prompted her. “And you are?”
“Jessie… Jessie Louis.”
“Well, Jessie Louis, welcome to the land of the Faolan.”
Soon, Jessie learned that the Faolan consisted of many, many wolves. Different breeds, different homes, different looks. As Dren and his brother, Fayt (spelled with an ‘yt’ and not a ‘te’ as he patiently explained), carefully told her things about their world.
They lived in constant noon, though they had bad and good weather. Most lived in the shade of the forest, and came out regularly. They were intelligent and proud creatures, but they got along well with other small breeds, that they generally called familiars. They told her that many human came into their world regularly, some by accident like her, some led by lore, some by friends, and other by a ‘calling.’ But only the good were able to pass through. A touch of evil, and the crystals made a dead end appear for the perceiver to see, and they could never make it through to the other side.
The Faolan were trusting creatures and often let the humans adopt the younglings. They grew up with their own packs, but heeded their owner’s call whenever it came. Jessie had seem some of the humans at a distance, playing with their wolves and some other smaller creatures, but they did not see or approach her. She learned that the wolves lived to breathtaking ages and only died of murder, which rarely happened in the peaceful realm, or the mentioned old age, which took centuries to complete.
Time froze here, and no human ever aged while in the realm. But eventually, the two wolves told her, every human had to re-taste the magic of their own world, or they would lose themselves.
She quickly realized this as true, for she could pass through the worlds and earth would still be like the minute she left. However, the Faolan world would continue to move, which may have accounted for their old age. But still, they’d always welcome her back.
Always.
