Lute was no longer dozing, but he was drowsy. He was awake in the setting light of the sun.. Odd, for a Sentinel, but he wanted to visit his trove of shiny objcts. He liked to sit on the branch outside his private hollow and watch the disco-ball effect the light caused on his mobile and large pile of the rarest gems he had.
Amber, Lapis Lazuli, Amythest, Diamond, Sapphire, Crystal, Quarts and Emeralds, some tied on tendon string and hung up in the hollow, slowly spinning, catching the light. And no-one but him knew of it! He gave a quick preen to his wings, then set off towards the hollow. One sycamore...two...three! There was the pine tree! But something was amiss! Something was very wrong. He banked and landed, peering into the thick nettles of the tree hosting his special cove. He glared and stared continuously, not sure if it was a foe he could chase or an enemy interested in his territory.
Finally, he lifted off with a low, rolling hiss and dove for the hollow. His treasures must be protected!

Syz had simply been flying by from his early-morning breakfast when all of a sudden a sparkle had caught his eye. Curious, he had circled back to investigate further, his small black wings carrying him cautiously at first, knowing full well he was within another Sentinel's territory. Sparkling things were valuable things, and valuable things had a tendency to be guarded. Creeping closer to the source of the light, Syz peered into the hollow of a pine only to jump back in surprise.
Syz had discovered, quite by accident, what to him was the most amazing and incredulous find of his entire small life. It was a hollow, but not just any hollow, this hollow held the most dazzling collection of jewels he had ever set eyes on. Now Syz was a fancier of all things shiny and the tempting light reflecting off the gems was too great to resist. He knew that this trove belonged to a Sentinel that cared enough to hide his treasure carefully, and would not take kindly to it being stolen.
Still... The shiny. Oh, so shiny.
Entranced by the light, Syz grabbed a particularly large crystal in his beak and turned around to make the first of many journeys home. At the lip of the hollow, Syz jumped when he heard Lute's angry hiss. Plummeting from the tree to avoid colliding with Lute, Syz stifled a squawk at the expense of his precious cargo.

Lute was not an overly agressive Sentinel. In fact, he welcomed just about everyone to his territory. Oh sure, he'd had problems with a few where he'd lost his temper, like when Sparrow came to visit not long ago, but this was the first time he had ever given chase to something in his territory.
Lute was horrified of hunting by himself. When he had been in classes, long ago, he had killed his teacher's companion- a small mus. And a few months later, he had tried the waiting game- chasing a vole into its burrow and then waiting a day and a night for it to come back out. He never took into consideration that it had more then one entrance to its burrow. But even though he didn't hunt, Lute was unafraid of tearing the small bird to pieces, of at least taking it back to his hollow....if he could catch it first.
Lute first landed harshly on the branch, where Syz had been a moment before. He saw the glint of a crystal in the bird's beak and screeched again, lifting off and diving after him. The still setting sun gave Lute a disadvantage, his pupils tiny and flashing purple spots in his vision. So he narrowed his eyes and relied on his ears. The familiar creek was bubbling beside him, but wing flaps to his left caused him to bank, beak straight out, slitted eyes a golden fury.

Syz was an experienced thief and the first rule to thieving was to never get caught, something he planned whole-heartedly to avoid. He had mobility on his side, whereas his pursuer had talons and a massive wingspan that could out-fly him in moments. Fleeing for his life and loot, Syz barreled into a densely leaved tree, knowing he would have some advantage of escape there.
Perhaps if he could stash the crystal for later he could come back, in fact, he knew where the entire collection was being hidden. What could keep him from simply returning later? Sadly, the fact of the matter was, Syz was not a scheming bird. If he saw something he wanted, he would do his best to get it right there and then, all plotting was lost to him.
This being considered, all the little Pica was thinking about was how to escape with his crystal. He knew Rune was close-by, the two of them scouting around for her profession only the night before. He would never stray too far from her side, but that didn't mean she wasn't a good distance away in terms of fleeing. Whatever his choice would be, he'd have to make it quick, he knew the angry Sentinel would find a way to get to him if given the chance.

Lute beat his massive wings as he gave chase. Instead of flying into the thick tree, he braked, then turned around and flew back a bit, head rotated so his eyes were always on the tree. He looked for where the Pica would come back out.
Lute could not spare a single gem from his collection. He had placed them all just so each one caught the light and made a rainbow on his walls. Losing just one would cause him to have to rearrange every last one so there were no dull spots on the wall. He circled the tree, eyes on the branches at all times, growling in his throat bitterly. He had no idea who's bird this was and if they had sought him out for their Sentinel or if they had just accidently found his trove and helped themselves.
"Pica! I will not harm you if you return the gem to me now"! he snarled. "This is your ONLY chance!"

Should he return the crystal, or make an escape? Clicking the treasure around in his beak he considered, and though he was no strategist, he was still a rather bright companion. A companion with a rather renowned caretaker. Knowing this possible advantage, Syz decided to use it to the best of his ability.
Setting his catch down carefully, he returned the Sentinel's threat, "Silly bird! Rune would be angry! Don't hurt me! My gem!" He knew Runewing would never approve of his thieving, but he was also positive she wouldn't let any other Sentinel harm him. The messes he'd gotten her into because of this habit were endless. Still, how could he help himself? He hoped that the Sentinel had at least heard of Runewing before, after all, not many Sentinels provoked the mysterious Mystic.
If not...

Lute HAD heard of Runewing before. Many times his customers spoke greatly of her. But his brain, his forgetful and often absent brain, caused the memory to evaide being remembered. "Its my gem, you little thief! You stole it from my private treasures! Please...Please give it back. Its important to me." he asked earnestly. "And I definatly doubt this Rune approves of you stealing from a crafter. If you want a gem, then you'll have to pay!"
He slowly circled the tree again, glaring into the branches, trying to find the small bird.

Syz puffed his feathers stubbornly, debating the Sentinel's pleas and offers. Buying was no fun, he wanted to give the gift to Rune as a surprise. Sure he'd just lie about where he found it, but the intentions were good, right? However, if Rune had to trade for the gem, all the surprise would be gone! Mind made up, Syz picked the crystal up in his mouth and peered out of the branches to eye the Sentinel's position.
Satisfied, he exploded from the tree in Rune's direction, only to run straight into her. Squawking in alarm, the gem plummeted into a bush, causing Syz a great amount of distress. Yet he couldn't afford to dive after it, knowing there was currently a very angry Sentinel in pursuit.
Runewing, having recovered from the collision, fluttered to a perch only to have Syz land directly on top of her. "Syz, what are you doing? Get off."
"Sorry Rune! Angry Sentinel after me!" He apologized, eyes flitting from the bush and back towards his pursuer. Great, now how would he give his surprise to Rune, the other Sentinel would ruin everything!
"Not again," was all Rune could muster, the day's rest not preparing her for such an early night.

Lute's ears flicked back and he turned quickly in mid-flight, shooting after the theiving Pica. He broke through a small cluster of branches and then banked, not expecting such a huge sentinel to be waiting for him. He banked over her at the last second, hissing loudly as he saw the Pica...but the gem was no longer in his beak. He must have hid it in the other bird's feathers.
He landed on a perch across from her, glaring furiously. "You must be Rune..." he panted, now out of breath from the hunt. She beautiful..but stunningly huge. He puffed himself, trying to match her size. "Your Pica..." he pointed his talon at the bird on her back. "He stole from me. A valuable crystal! Give it back, now!" he was done trying to negotiate and he did not trust this bigger Sentinel.

Rune had experienced just about enough objects flying at her. She was already acutely aware to the situation, the scenario unfolding before her one of familiarity. All the same, she didn't enjoy the tone the other Sentinel was using. She could get to the bottom of the theft in a moment, but first Rune was intent on knowing with whom she was dealing. "Yes, I am Runewing, and you are?"
In the meantime, Syz had caught the implication that Lute thought the crystal was hidden and not lost in a bush below them. Perhaps Rune didn't know either? She wouldn't have seen it fall and wouldn't have know he was carrying anything in the first place. Claiming innocence was definitely the way to go.

Lute glared. "I am Lute, a sterling silver crafter. I also collect rare gems. I keep them in a hollow so no nosy Picas will steal them. But it seems I did not hide it well enough, for your's has found it and stolen one of my treasures." he said, hissing. "I saw him take it and fly with it. Now hand it over." He held out his talon expectantly.

Unsatisfied with his introduction, she decided to let his attitude pass, after all she was certain he was the victim here. However, to accuse her of thievery was out of the question. "Do not address me as if I am the thief, Lute." She warned, "Or are you accusing me of something I am not aware of?" It was apparent that he thought she was hiding the gem now instead of Syz, and Runewing twisted her head to peer at the Pica on her back.
Sensing the jig was up, Syz hopped to the side of Rune and fluffed himself in an attempt to look shamelessly adorable.
"Don't think that's going to work this time." Rune chided, "What have you done with Lute's crystal?" If this treasure was as valuable as Lute made it sound, Rune could tell Syz wouldn't be able to hide it on himself. Instead, she reasoned he must have stashed it before she had recovered from their collision.
"I don't have it!" He piped up, producing a statement which was both true and non-incriminating. Syz tried his best to keep from looking at the bush the crystal had fallen in, not wanting to give away his secret, but he still couldn't help but glance.

"I only assumed your Pica was not working on his mind alone. Senri, my parus, never leaves my side unless I tell him to go berry picking for me." he said, ruffling his ear tufts. When he saw, however, how displeased she was, he sighed. "I just haven't had experience with many Picas though."
He itched behind his ear tuft with frustration, his tarnished earring catching the light of the sun. "He was in a maple tree back there, trying to escape me. He may have stashed it there, but I'd still like to examine both of your feathers." he said, eyes narrowed sternly in a harsh glare at the Pica, as though though trying to worm the answer out of him.
Firstly, though, he gave a loud shriek. A moment or three later, a small greenish Parus landed beside him. "Ye' be beckoni' me, sah?" he asked with a rough slurring noise in his throat. "Yes, Senri. I have been stolen from. The large crystal in my private hollow. Go back and search the maple tree by the river for me, alright? I'll be along soon to help look." The parus nodded, glared at the Pica, then fluttered away. Lute branch-hopped closer to Runewing and Syz. "May I?" he asked, though he was sure it was not there.

"Yes, Pica are the companion of the Mystic, and do not aid in matters of regular servitude. They have their own purpose." She glared at Syz, unsure of what exactly his particular purpose was at the moment aside from getting into trouble. "I wouldn't put it past him, this sort of thing has happened before."
Syz deflated and edged away from Rune's glare. So that approach wasn't going to fly. He wanted to own up to the situation, he really did. He hated it when Rune was upset with him, all he had wanted to do was find her a pretty surprise, how had everything gotten so tangled up? That's why he couldn't admit where the crystal was, because then Rune would know it was his fault for certain. He didn't even want to think about how mad that would make her. Lute had hopped closer and Syz glared at the Sentinel for ruining his plans, spreading his small wings wide to prove he wasn't hiding the crystal.
Likewise, Runewing spread her enormous wingspan, displaying proudly the gems she did possess. They glittered in the dying sunlight, and Rune left her wings open for Lute's appraisal.

Lute eyed her gems, but none matched the crystal that had been thieved from his hollow. "Fine..he did stash it somewhere." he said, eyeing the Pica.
He puffed himself to his full height. "Know, miss Rune, that I gave him a chance to fess up and return the gem..it is rather pricey...so if he refuses to return it, then you will have to pay for it. It is one of my private gems, so it will not be a gentle price either." He said. "So I suggest, little Pica, you take us to where you put the gem."
