Mud was fun. Well, Reed thought so, anyway. It was an easy way to cool off on hot and muggy days in the swamp, he'd found. But, you know, it just didn't seem quite as fun once it had dried and stuck on to your fur. Reed was covered in caked-on soil, it had started to weigh down his thick fur and he thought, now, that it felt rather unpleasant. Though this was not a problem when you lived in a place with so much water. The large buck was standing at the edge of a small pool filled with still, dark swamp water. The bottom of the pool was not visible, as the sun did not penetrate it's depths, here, the trees blocked and soaked up the warm rays. Slowly he crept in, testing the depth with his front hooves. Once he'd found a spot free of sticks, branches, rocks, and other litter, that was about up to his knees, Reed flopped over and began to roll in the water. The previously black water was now a cloudy dark tan, and it would remain that color until all of the washed-off dirt has settled to the bottom of the pool. Stepping out of the water, Reed shook his body, sending small drops of water flying off several feet in every direction.

Spring Sky had been lying on the shore of the pool, watching the water skaters and baby mosquitoes writhing in buggy naivety. His existential train of thought was suddenly interrupted, though, by a sudden splashing and smattering of water. The water skaters scuttled to shore, the mosquitoes lost in the ripples...and then the spray! All over! He rolled to his feet in slight offense and shook his head, looking for the splasher. He had expected a foal, but seeing this large lavender buck made him smile.
"Hello!" he called.

Reed quickly turned around, seemingly startled by the sudden and unexpected greeting. For a long moment he did nothing but stare at the bright, vibrant coat of the other buck, wondering how he could have possibly missed spotting him earlier. However, he wasn't one to be... purposely... rude. "Hello!" called Reed in reply, "Did I splash you?... If so, I apologize, I didn't even notice you there." What a way to meet someone, not noticing them and splashing them with dirty swampwater. Lovely.

Spring shook his head and gave a derisive snort. He approached the younger buck calmly and slowly.
"No, it is no problem, friend. I am Spring Sky. I haven't spoken to another Kimeti in days."

"Spring Sky? A fitting name for your vibrant colors, I suppose..."
Well, personally, Reed thought the name to be a bit more... feminine... than anything, but stating his opinion would indeed be very... rude?
"I am Reedmace. May I ask why you've gone so long without speaking to another?"

Spring stamped his front hooves and shook his head.
"I find myself becoming more and more hermit-like as time goes on. And this heat! I would rather be cool inside than--HGGN!" Spring snorted in terror and leaped back as something in the water before him thrashed suddenly. It was all brown and scales and sharp teeth. Oh my! Alligator! It sat, mouth open, hissing at the bucks.

Oh how unexpected. In the middle of some innocent, casual conversation, Reed got his first good look at a swamp alligator. He was a young buck, and though he'd seen them plenty of times before; it was always from a distance. For a moment he froze, staring forward at the gaping jaws of the large carnivore, but soon enough he snapped back in to his senses and quickly jumped backwards, stumbling and falling back down in to the mud that he had only just washed off of himself. Of course, there was no way Reed would get back in that pool; how scary a thought it was that he had just been in that very same body of water.

Spring leaped from the water and bound about in a couple of nervous circles. He had seen plenty of swamp alligators, but he had never been quite so close to stepping on one before. The alligator, angered that the white one had gotten to far away, hissed more loudly and took a few steps toward Reed.

It couldn't snatch him up that easily... right?..... Right?
Reed firmly stood his ground, eyes narrowed, he closely watched the movement of the alligator, waiting for it to attempt to strike. Hopefully, Reed would be able to jump out of the way. If not, then well, uh, he'd be missing a leg. Or a head.

Nothin' doin'! The gator lunged and snapped its jaws closed, hoping for some nice, nice Kimeti meat.

As the alligator lunged forward, Reed jumped backwards. His heart was racing, he glanced around frantically in an attempt to spot Spring, in hopes that the alligator hadn't whacked him or knocked him over when Reed wasn't paying attention during the lunge. However, with all of the action, he hadn't even noticed that Spring had taken off as soon as the gator emerged from the water. In a state of panic, the purple buck, very quickly, turned to dash away from the scene.

Spring had, in fact, been hiding in some thick brush a few yards behind Reed. Call him mean, but he didn't want to yell and cause the gator to strike. When he saw Reed bolt past, he followed at a breakneck pace.
"Why didn't you run before?!," he panted, "Are you some kind of idiot?!"

At first, Reed didn't reply to Spring's questions, but after he was positive that the gator wouldn't follow him as far as he'd gone, his running slowed to trotting, and he eventually stopped, his heart still pounding uncomfortably in his chest, feeling as if though it were about to explode from the instant stress of the incident. Once he was calmed down a bit, he gave Spring an awkward look, a scale-covered eyebrow raised.
"An idiot?..." Reed seemed a bit annoyed at that comment, but just let it pass. "Well, I thought that you were still there at first, and I didn't want to just ditch you there with that stupid gator."
Turning around, Reed stared off in the direction of the pool for a moment, still in a state of slight disbelief that he had practically bathed with an alligator.
