So if anyone has seen the NPD number this month...you can clearly see that the PS2 almost outsold the 360 by 50K.

This begs me the question...why is the PS2 still selling to this day? I saw I think two of them sold today in Target.

I don't get it. I seriously don't.

I might buy the slim model....

It's cheap and I can play the games my 40GB PS3 can't.

Not to mention PS2 games are cheap now. I could pick up GREAT games for $19.99 or lower.

Probably because the PS3 hasn't completely established its foothold in the market yet. It's got some A-lister titles, but its place in the market and community isn't fully established.

And contrary to popular belief, I am not biased against the PS3. Anyone about to say that needs to STFU.

I'm with Ace. If I could find a PS3 model with BC I'd buy it but I need my Shadow of the Colossus fix from time to time.

Ok...something has been bugging me about this BC thing. The 80GB models use software emulation, right? Meaning, they wrote a program so that PS2 games will play in the PS3. If they already wrote the program, WHY the hell aren't they just putting it in the 40GB models? Better yet, why aren't they just selling $20~$30 install disks to make the 40GB models BC?

Here's the deal...software is a little different when it comes to development and production costs. Almost ALL of the cost is in development. So...if you don't sell the software, you lose money. So again, WHY is there not soft-emulation on 40GB models?

It'd sell more if Sony actually wanted to sell it.

All of the above reasons. Great games, it's cheap. Plus with the cheapest Ps3 not being able to play its games, that fuels gamers who missed out on Ps2 era to pick one up, keeping it going.

Get this: they're selling both PS2s and PS3 at a loss, and they're focusing support on the PS3. If they don't get get enough profit from their own games and royalties, the PS3 just becomes a failed product.
The PS2 has already made a profit, and they don't need people buying consoles if they aren't producing for it or making it up in royalties.
No, I don't have numbers or links, but that's my theory.

aaaaaaaaaand it'd be a lot easier for it if everyone wasn't pushing the words "Next Gen" as well.
