I'm not sure what the situation with your hamster's environment is, but here are some suggestions for an optimal environment for your hamster:

Don't use cedar bedding. The smell is too much for the little guys. Also remember to change the bedding at least once every week to two weeks.

Make sure it gets fresh water several times a week in something other than an open dish, preferably one of those bottles that they can lick and get water from.

Make sure you're feeding it name-brand hamster food and look for any moths or bugs that may have ventured into the bag. If there is a sign of bugs, don't use it. Don't feed your hamster anything other than hamster-specific food or treats. Don't feed it your table scraps or veggies.

Give it lots of things to play with, wheels, little boxes to hide in, etc. Talk to your pet store expert to give suggestions on what to get.

Make sure the hamster you're buying is healthy! The signs of a sick hamster are fairly obvious, so make sure the hamster is alert, moving around, and doing "normal" hamster things.

I hope some of this helps, and the best of luck to you.

P.S. This should be in the pet section, but it's alright, I'll leave it here. ^^

Yup. look for signs of illness before buying. And after buying, for that matter, check to see it has healthy stool and everything. Keep it out of direct sunlight or it may overheat and die...
When I buy mice and gerbils I like to give them vitamin supplements in their water to boost their immune system incase they're fighting something I don't know about. Make sure it's for hamsters!!!

As for they food, Martin's Hamster/Gerbil food is really good stuff, the nutrients are more compact. Plus its a pellet...kinda disc-like form of food. It's better to buy the pellet-like foods than the seeds, as seeds tend to be fatty, and a lot of them are mixed with things that have artificial coloring and what not.

Hope you have better luck with your next hamster!
you should post a pic of it and tell us its name!
