Caution, this is a really long post, and it's mostly about my concert/night in general. the system of a down stuff is a couple paragraphs before the bottom.
Oh man, I had so much fun last night at the System of a Down concert. It wasn't really much of a system of a down concert, actually...The Mars Volta stole the show. Well, I was mainly going for The Mars Volta anyway. Ok....
It was about 5 when Collin and his brother and his friend came and got me from my place, then we started driving to the MTS center, and of course Collin, Jeff and Duguod were fascinated by our orange buses, and chicken chef.... Saskatchewan doesn't have chicken chef! o.0 Not that they're missing anything. Anyways. We got to the mts center, but we weren't sure where to park, so we just found this place on bannatyne or something and walked to the mts center from there. We got confused with the parking ticket things, we weren't sure how the system worked, and me and Collin had to go get change from this restaurant type deal across the street. Heh, this guy tried selling us this painting, and apparently he asked Jeff and Duguod if they wanted it too...Heh, Duguod wanted it just to be able to tell the story of how he bought this painting from a Hobo in winnipeg.. Anyways, The MTS center was just a few blocks away, so it didn't really put us out much time. We went to the merch table closest to us and it was really busy so we went and found another one that wasn't as packed. I got 2 mars volta shirts, one green and one black. I'd post pictures but I didn't post them on my photobucket and I'm at my dad's place now. The black one has a birdman stabbing this naked man in the foot, here's a link I just found for it:
http://www.exquisitestores.com/volta/images/products/LG/MV_Birdman_lg.jpg aaaand the site doesn't have a picture of the green one yet. Before we even went in, we went to ocalcutta and looked at their hoodies, but they didn't have much, just the pixels one and another one...I think it had spiders on it... I might get it next time I had money, but they were both extra large so it's gonna be baggy and gay. So anyways...
After we got stuff at the merch table, we ate at quizno's. While we were sitting there we saw lots of different people, mostly in trenchcoats. There were a few emo kids, and this girl had a shirt that said PEN15 and I thought it said p***s at first, but there's still not much of a difference. There were a bunch of old people there, well maybe middle age, I guess. Also, some really young looking kids, probably like 6 or 7....After we ate, I changed into one of my shirts and we went outside and walked around for a bit, then I sold one of my tickets to this drunk guy with a lazy eye....hahaha he was SO drunk, it was pretty ********. He offered us his booze. Heh, he kinda scared me, to be honest. I don't trust drunks. I was scared he was gonna pull out a knife and cut us up or something.
So we went back in and got our seats, which were really good seats, actually. Most of the time. We were right above the exit on the left side of the stage, if you're looking from the stage. The only problem was that sometimes people would stand on the stairs and watch the concert and not get to their ******** seats.
The concert in itself was.amazing. The opening band Hella were pretty good, actually. They started with only one guitarist on stage with the drummer, and they were both insanely good at what they did. Haha but at some points it seemed like he was raping and/or beating his guitar, haha, I'm not sure how to explain it...Anyways. After Hella, we waited about 25-30 minutes for The Mars Volta. They blew me away. They were the best part of that concert. I love their live sound, and their performance. Cedric is all over the stage, dancing and singing and being sexy, Omar was showing his mad skills on the guitar, Adrian (I believe his name was) did some really cool flute solos, they caught my attention a few times when I was distracted with the lights, and everyone else were doing awesome too. They played Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus, L'via L'viaquez, The Widow, and the extended version of drunkship of Lanterns, which sounds like it'd take like half an hour to play them all, but No, hehe if you know the mars volta, you know that their songs are exceedingly long and you need mad attention span skills for them. Which, oddly, I can pay attention to music, and probably not much else...I can't sit through movies, and I sometimes can't even sit through conversations, haha... Anyways, Yeah I really enjoyed their live show and hopefully they come back to Winnipeg, Headlining a tour because that'd just ******** rule. I love Cedric's dancing so much. At one point he was slithering around on the floor. I LOOOVED it! I also really enjoyed their backdrop. Well, not so much the first one they had, I wasn't sure what it was... around the middle of their show though they dropped down another one with a birdman on each side, and a vortexy-ish type thing in the middle, but it was straight lines, and not really a vortex....Anyways, when they turned on certain lights you could see one of the logos they use on their merch, and it looked like the lines were moving around..but that could've just been me. Heh, that's about all I can think of about The Mars Volta.
So, on to System of a Down. They sounded AMAZING, but Serj was really dissapointing. He was standing around most of the time, or just moving his hands and s**t. He did the angry octopus once though, so I was like "w00t!" Hehe and he was doing a little bit of dancing...but mainly moving his arms..And in a few songs where on the albums he'd scream, he sung in high pitch, which was pretty good, but I prefer screaming. I also liked Shavo's socks. They were yellow!
whee anyway, I'd post the set list, which I think it was the same as what they had on their site before, but it's not there and I can't remember it all. I DO remember them starting with Soldier's side and BYOB, then playing Revenga...and ending with Sugar, which they didn't play the intro to that I love so dearly! D: Anyways. I liked the stage. After the Mars Volta were finished, the roadies put up this gigantic curtain with the clock totem on it, and when the band was ready the lights went out and there was a spotlight on Daron, and he was singing Soldier's side. It looked really cool, he was silhouetted on the curtain. After Soldier's side was over the curtain fell and they were all there, Shavo and daron were putting on a good show, but serj was just standing around! And John was playing the drums, so what can I say about that, hehe..The stage was pretty nice, too big for them though. There were a bunch of cool lights, including this screen-type thing behind them that when they were playing mr. Jack it wrote out "******** u pig" and I thought it was really cool. There were fog machines and persian rugs too.. I'm trying to think of all the other songs they played...I know they also did Revenga, Cigaro,(Daron did an awesome intro to it....it was all solemn, hehe) Violent pornography, Chop Suey, This Cocaine makes me feel like I'm on this song, Question!, Sad Statue, Lost in Hollywood, Mr. Jack, War, Prison Song, Needles, Forest, Aerials, Psycho, and of course Soldier's side, BYOB and Sugar. I'm pretty sure I'm missing a few songs though. That's about all I can say about System of a Down.. Oh yeah, apparently they got caught in edmonton or something...I don't know...
When we left the mts center, everyone was outside screaming "SYSTEM!" heh we really wanted a riot to start! it would've been pretty funny.
We got back to the car, and Jeff was trying to unlock the doors with the clicker thing, but it wasn't working at all, so he unlocked the door with the key, soon to realize that the car was completely dead. We're still not sure what happened, but it was just stone dead, so we had to call a tow truck and get them to give us a boost. A bunch of freaky looking people walked by and asked us what was going on with the car, one of which needed change for the bus, so Jeff gave him some change so he wouldn't stab him. This other guy was standing next to the car, about 10 feet away and whistling at one of the windows behind us, because apparently people lived in them. Personally I wouldn't ever even live in that area. But I'm from St james, all sheltered and s**t, so that's just me. Back to this b***h... The tow truck guy said something about gas being up to like 2 bucks by tomorrow, and collin said "why's that?" or something to that effect and the tow truck guy was like "I don't know" and collin said "well then why'd you say it?" hehe....So on our way back we were talking about it, and somehow got lost, Hehe Collin was driving and he thought we were on portage, I did too, actually, until we got to like the highway or something..I wasn't sure what it was, but collin made a U turn, and I accidentally told him to turn the wrong way, because I'm dumb like that and I'm horrible with directions. So we finally got on portage avenue, and there were people lined up at the ******** pumps at gas stations. It was craaazy! Ahah, we were looking for CBC on the radio to see if there was anything new on the hurricanes, because of the gas going up tomorrow, but we couldn't find CBC so instead we were listening to this ghost program...it was pretty lame, hehe, this guy was telling the dj about this figure on his parents' couch, calling him...and the dj was like "alex... alex..! calling you like that or more beckoning?" and I didn't hear the next part, then the next caller was talking about something spelling out "Katrina" and "rita" which was probably bullshit to get onto the radio, haha... So we finally got to my apartment, and they dropped me off. It was Quite the night.
