The day was young and already the temperature was unbearable in the direct sun for the black coated stallion. The heat seemed to lay on him thickly in the summer. He didn't know which was worse, that or the cold bite of winter. So instead of spending the day grazing, he tended to hide in any shade he could find.

Today, he was beneath a grove of spread out trees. One tree had fallen recently, probably due to the constant rainy weather as of late. Vasu' snuffed at the thick beam that lay in front of him. He was measuring its hight in comparison to him. It could almost reach a quarter of his chest.

A bit of his echoing voice began to ring in his head. He had a tendency to talk out his actions, then execute them in just the way he had thought. In a nut shell, he talked to himself. Only when he was alone of course, and in the right mood.

Lift that chin....

get a good running start.....

back up to.....here!

So he did just that. He lifted his chin into the air, flared his nostrils, and took a few long paces away from the tree. Picking up his feet, he then headed straight for the tree, with full intent on jumping it. Only when he got close enough, he threw his hooves into the ground, braking himself with a thrust. He had chickened out at the last moment, almost running smack into the tree.

He snorted at the tree again.

Back up! Again!

He backed up again, resetting himself in preparation for the jump.

Kahili was getting tired of the constant hot weather. Practically all her life it’d been hot and she couldn’t wait until the first snow fall. Most probably dreaded the cold but she couldn’t be happier to have it coming. Though she still had a few months. She groaned at the thought and continued walking through the blistering heat.

Up ahead in the distance there seemed to be a large patch of trees that provided a fair amount of shade to escape the blazing sun. With a sigh of relief she picked up her pace but only to realize she wasn’t the only one looking for shelter from the heat. Stopping half way to watch what the stallion was doing, her head tilted curiously. He seemed to be trying to jump over a fallen tree but was having some difficulties with it. He ran towards it full speed only to stop and back up again which made her giggle. “Having some troubles?” she asked with a smile as she trotted the rest of the way towards the large patch of shade.

The stallion startled, bolting to one side in a small leap before turning his head around to meet the voice. "Woooah-ho-hoo. You startled me!" he said before he got a chance to look at the approaching mare. A lump welled up in his throat and he did he best to swallow it before he spoke again. "N-n-no. No trouble at all." he smirked. "I just want to make sure I make it."

His eyes looked her over, from her mystic blue eyes, down to her black hooves. Vasu tried to do it quickly, so it didn't appear he was checking her out too much. She was pretty though, like a fresh spring breeze that danced on the wind and over the flowers.

Don't say she's pretty..

"Your.." ..pretty! he thought reflexively. "..new here?" Phew! He had managed to curb his usual tendencies to call a mares beauty before he even knew them. He had been working on his mare-struck emotions and made some good friends in doing so. "D' names Vasu'Raj but please, call me Vasu."

Kahili blinked at his reaction and couldn’t help but giggling. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. You just looked so funny trying to get over the log, I couldn’t help myself,” she explained with a little smile. This stallion sure did seem like he was star struck or something with him being tongue-tied and not even knowing what he wanted to say. It was probably just a side effect of her startling him. Being that his bright blue eyes stuck out so much from his dark coat she did catch him looking her over but again didn’t think anything of it. She wasn’t used to being admired and honestly didn’t know that he was ‘checking her out’.

The bright purple mare tilted her head and looked around at the surroundings she was in. It wasn’t exactly familiar so did that mean she was new? “Sure I guess. In a sense that I don’t think I’ve been to this place before. But it’s a pleasure to meet you Vasu, my name’s Kahili. You can call me Kahili,” she giggled again and danced, rather than trotted, over to him. “So are you going to jump this log or are ya just gonna give up?”

He chuckled a little. "Kahili, I will do my best!" he perked up, confidence washing over his face. "If I don't make it, and I end up killing myself in the process...uh...at least you can take vengeance for me later." He shifted nervously. "Burn it or something." He stuck his tongue out at the tree, then shifted his back feet around. His rear bounced about as he prepared his feet with a shuffle of anticipation.

"Raaaah!" he called as he pushed off the ground with as much force as he could. Clods of dirt and grass clinging then releasing from his hooves. Kahili blurred as he took off. The tree bobbed closer and closer. Then....he put on the brakes again. Skidding to a stop and then pounding his forehead on the tree in defeat. He sat there for a moment, huffing and panting.

Well crap. He hadn't even tried to make the jump. Instead his muscles had instinctively tightened and forced him to stop. He wasn't afraid, so what was the problem? Why couldn't he make the jump? Then he thought of the mare behind him, staring at his failure. He thumped his forehead against the tree a couple more times, for good measure, looking down at the tracks that were forming from his stops in the grass.

Kahili giggled as he stopped in front of the log again until she noticed that he actually seemed pretty upset about it. With a tilt of her head, she trotted over to him and gave his neck a gentle nudge. “Hey. Don’t be upset. I wouldn’t be able to do it either. C’mon, come with me.” She grabbed his curly mane and started towing him along with her, whether he liked it or not and once she figured they were in a good spot she let him go. “Stay right there,” she told him before trotting off through the trees, her tail swishing as she went. It was only a couple minutes before she returned with a long stick in her mouth and she dropped it a few feet away from him. “Go for it! I KNOW you can jump this one!” She giggled again and smiled at him. “Not everyone can be so amazing to jump a big log like that but you shouldn’t let that get ya down.”

Vasu tilted his head up. Scraps of bark fell from the tree, where his head had been pressed. The tree beam really was quite large, but he should of been able to clear it no problem. Or at least that's the way he felt about it. He puckered his lips together as she pointed out that she wouldn't be able to make it over the tree either. "Really?" That small assessment made him feel better. If he had been cocky like his dad, he might of thought something like "But that's cause your a girl." When in fact, he didn't even begin to think it. Funny how one could grow up so differently from ones parent. He would of thought she could jump it if she hadn't said otherwise.

An O shape formed on his mouth as she pulled on his curls and led him away from the monstrous tree that had dealt his defeat. A flush of heat rose to his cheeks as she did, the blush barely noticeable with his dark features. "Oh. Ok. Here. Stay." Parking his rear on the ground with a thump he sat right where she told him to. His face still burning from first her encouraging nudge, then leading him away by a lock of his mane. She could of just left, but he didn't think of that either. He was too busy being flustered and not knowing what to think. Taking a deep breath, he let it go slowly trying to keep his cool.

Before he had much longer to debate the mare, the sound of her return made him look to see what she was up to. A light bounce in her step brought her in front of him with a....a branch?? Vasu smiled from ear to ear at the peculiar gesture as she dropped it in front of him. Momentarily, he forgot about his blushings.

"Oh-ho-ho-ho." He half laughed as he rose to his feet. "This branch is going down!" He bobbed his rear as he took a couple steps back to get a run. Of course he didn't need to get a run going, but he felt goofy and needed it for dramatic effect. "You ready for this." he nodded his head with a dance of his front feet, then took off. He braked in front of the branch and gave Kahili a huge all teeth grin, then hopped lightly over the stick. On the other side, he dug one of his hooves in the air as he bobbed his head up and down in a fit of laughter.

Kahili laughed and danced up to his side, giving his neck another nudge. “There see, you’re amazing! That stick didn’t stand a chance.” She gave a wink with a little giggle and turned to leap over the stick herself. She felt so…silly, doing this. But just Vasu’s nature made her want to laugh and act silly like him, which was a nice change compared to being around others whom didn’t really do much.

She’d never really been around anyone as free spirited as him before. Porsche was a lot of fun but he seemed much more goofy than she was, she was more excited and happy than just plain silly. “Well beside jumping giant logs and sticks what else was on your agenda today? Maybe we can find something fun to do together. Cause y’know,” she said as she kicked the stick with her hoof. “Jumping sticks only gives ya about a couple minutes of thrills before it gets boring.”

Vasu was glowing from ear to ear, fueled by the ringing laughter of the mare by his side. She was laughing with him! And it felt great. When she pounced over the stick too, he nudged her back in the neck, the way she had to him. "There! You see? Your a natural." he stuck out his tongue playfully as his laughter subsided with a noisy sigh of contentment.

"Your absolutely right! These sticks don't stand a chance." he went to paw at the stick and instead snapped it in half. His lips pushed together and his eyebrows rose. It could be described as both a look of "oops, did I do that" and one of "haha, serves it right".

"No, Kahili, I had nothing else planned. I could think of something quick though! Liiiike, go down that hill to the watering hole." he ended with a single nod. Going down to the watering hole probably didn't seem like much fun at all. He was easy going though, and felt anything in the right company could be fun and worthwhile. Skipping over to the top of the hill and halted. Looking at Kahili, he listened intently to anything she had to say.

Kahili let out a giggle and beamed with pride as she pranced around him, proud of her big 'acomplishment'. "We are just the best most amazing team ever. I bet we could do anything! ...Well except jump over that big tree but who cares, we don't need it anyway!" Trotting over to said tree she turned and gave it a swift kick before happily trotting back over to her new friend.

"Y'know after such a big workout a trip to the watering hole sounds like a good plan to me. Lead the way, oh great stick jumper!" She giggled and ran after him. It was nice to find someone so outgoing and silly to have fun with. Vasu was nothing like the others she'd met before and she was thankful for that. She needed a bit of fun and silliness in her life and he was the answer for it!
