 Flame laid by the edge of the stream inside one of their tunnels. Their secluded paradise was being drenched with rainfall, so the tunnels were a safe getaway. The passageway was well lit by the fire on Flame's back, and he could see Koorie clearly in the light. He sighed and gave her a small smile. He wondered if she was pregnant. She didn't appear to be, and it had been awhile, and they had tried several times. He laid his head on his paws and snorted a puff of smoke into the air.

 Koorie lay farther back in the cave, pressed against the wall; she could feel Flame's eyes on her and she knew what he was thinking. Unfortunately, the answer would be a big fat 'no'; she still had conceived no litter at all. now she lay there staring into the darkness where the stream vanished into the black. Outside, she could hear the rain and the occasional rumbling of thunder.
"I'm not impregnated.... if that's what you're wondering." Her voice was soft and derived of emotions.

Flame sighed and began to pace beside the edge of the water. He was itching to get outside and run, but he couldn't, and there wasn't enough room in the small tunnels to run. Especially not the ones with water in them. But he didn't want to be away from Koorie. All his pent up energy was making him edgy. On top of that, him and Koorie weren't getting anything in the child department.
He trotted over closest to her and stopped pacing. He watched her expression carefully. There wasn't much there. He didn't like seeing her like that.
"It will happen eventually. When it's meant to happen. We'll keep trying."

Koorie said nothing, shifting her position so her head was resting on her front paws. Her expression changed a little from emotionless to depressed and upset.
"And what if it doesn't happen. What happens then, will we keep trying fruitlessly? Maybe we aren't supposed to happen to begin with...."

Flame snorted and then went to press his face against hers. He nuzzled her and then looked her in the eyes.
"Don't talk like that, love. We are supposed to happen. We are supposed to be together, no matter what. Nothing is more important to me than you are, even if we can't have children...and I don't believe that's true." He wanted so badly to cheer her up. He smirked, trying to lighten the situation, and added, "Besides, it's not like we don't have fun trying."

Koorie looked into his eyes with her red orbs, listening to what he was saying, and enjoying herself in his tender touch. Sighing, she leaned into him a bit. "Sometimes it just feels like everything is against us...."
She pulled away at his last comment and softly smacked his nose with a paw. "You pig!" Of course, there was no way she was going to be able to stay even remotely mad at him.

Flame chuckled, but then felt bad about the comment. He hadn't gotten the reaction he had wanted, but her being mad was better than nothing. Besides, she was cute when she was mad. But he hated upsetting her. He sighed, "Sorry, love. I guess I'm not as desirable to you as you are to me..." He hoped that wouldn't make things worse...He quickly tried to recover himself by taking her face in his giant paws.
"It doesn't matter if the whole world is against us." If there was one thing Flame seemed to be good at it, it was going from joking to serious in 2.5 seconds.

Koorie blinked, then smiled and leaned into him. "As long as we have each other, we'll be able to take on the world.... Maybe this is just fate's way of saying we aren't ready to be parents just yet."
She closed her eyes, happy to be in Flame's possession; this was where she belongs, this was her niche in life, and this was where she was most needed.

He smiled as he nuzzled her. "Exactly, Love...the world doesn't stand a chance." He winked and then added, "When it's time, it will happen. We have all the time in the world."
He dimmed the fire on his back slightly, one reason being because he was so close to Koorie, and another reason just because it had a nice effect. The light glowed and flickered against the tunnel wall. Flame closed his eyes and pressed his cheek against hers. Her cool skin was a nice contrast to his warm body.

Koorie felt herself relax as he dimmed his flames, the cave taking on the warm, cozy feel of being in front of a fire place. She smiled, closing her eyes in contentness as he pressed his cheek against hers, the warmth flooding through her. Before she knew it, she'd fallen asleep cuddling into him.

Flame watched her sleep and sighed contentedly. He was so happy to be in this tunnel with her, in their own little paradise, away from the word that seemed to be against them. Here he could be with her, and love her, and protect her. And he hoped that someday he would have children to protect as well.
It wasn't long before he was asleep right next to her, his flames dimming even more until it was almost completely dark.  -ONE MONTH LATER-

Koorie swam back and forth in a small pond, her equivalent of pacing, as she wondered how to tell Flame. She was pregnant, she knew she was just by instinct and the fact that her stomach was beginning to swell. Sighing, she took a deep breath; she had to tell him, and it would be best to just spit it out to him.
"Flame; I'm pregnant...." She practiced quietly.

Flame was coming to the pond to get some water, and he noticed Koorie pacing back and forth in the water. He wondered what was wrong as he walked closer to her, keeping his ears perked up for any signs of danger or anything that could be upsetting her. That's when he heard, "Flame; I'm pregnant..."
He stopped in his tracks and just stared for a moment. He hadn't been expecting it. He had stopped expecting anything awhile ago, just hoping that it would happen when it did. Then a big smile spread across his face. He was now standing not far away, just a few steps away from her.
"Really?" he said excitedly.

Koorie nearly jumped out of the water in surprise when she heard Flame's voice. She hadn't expected him to be behind her like that and her heart was hammering from being startled. She turned to look at him, then nodded.
"Yes, I'm pregnant...." She swam up and slid onto the bank, her slightly enlarged stomach visible. She gave him a very small smile. "I didn't want to tell you until I was sure...." She looked down at her stomach, then up at him. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure at this point."

Flame chuckled and placed a paw gently on her stomach. "They are going to be beautiful. I'm so proud." He then leaned close and kissed her tenderly.
