Discussion!
Aherm...I saw this discussion topic in another forum site (phantomoftheopera.com) and thought it was an interesting debate topic. 3nodding
Forgive me if this is a silly topic or something... whee
So anyhoozles, what do you guys think? Feel free to post your opinions and facts about the love between them two.
Personally...Well, let me just copy and paste my answer from the other site...
I believe Christine *did* love Erik. On a different level.
She and Erik had that love for music, and Erik quote "made her soul soar" with his music and his oh-so-seductive voice. But at first, when he had just come to her as her "angel of music", she loved the fact that it was partly her father. She believed that it was her father teaching her. But when she found out that it *wasn't* her father, she loved the musical, passionate side of Erik. And she pitied him.
Raoul on the other hand, was more of the "flesh and blood" suitor. He was there for her, he cared for, he showed her love and was more of the "husband" material that a girl (like Christine) could have wanted.
So I believe that she loved them both. But for different reasons. I kind of think of it as Christine's dark side and Christine's light side. The dark - Erik; The light - Raoul.
And this is what Joel Schumacher said (word for word): "Christine's relationship with Raoul is really her romantic awakening as a teenager. But I think that her pull towards the Phantom is a very sexual, very deep, soulful union."
And I agree with that whole-heartedly! *Nod*

She loved the sweetness and the protectiveness of Raoul, but Erik was so... powerful, and (if we're going by the play) just plain sexual. Every song they sung was laden with either sexual lyrics or dances.
I think that she chose Raoul for the following reasons: she wanted to stay outside, and be able to see the world, and she was just plain frightened by how much of a hold Erik had on her. If he had been a bit less overwhelmingly overpowering, she might've actually gone with him. After all, when all is said and done, Erik was a much more... sexual, sensual type person than Raoul, who opted for the extreme differences.
They're like polar opposites... which is why it's so hard for Christine to choose.

~The Red Death~ Yes, she did. She loved both Raoul and Erik. Until, well, we all know what happened. Actaully, I think she still loves them both. Just hiding it.

Actually I sort of don't blame Christine. I mean Raoul was what every girl wanted at the time. Money, a title, he was handsome, sweet anf kind to Christine. Socially he was the best out there.
However few people actually knew about Erik's existance.
Christine was slowly getting introduced into the Paris aristocracy, and she bought into what the public wanted.
Love Erik? Perhaps, but he was from a completely different world then she had been.

Love Erik? Perhaps, but he was from a completely different world then she had been. I agree on a few levels with you. My theory is she loved Erik before she knew he was a real person because she was soully convinced the man giving her lessons was her Father, but on finding out it was someone else, she became wary, but his music still held her to him like a spell which wouldn't break. And as every teenager is, they want to be known as much as they can throughout society and considered the 'creme de la creme'. Having known Raoul anyway, she was swept away at the opportunity to be loved by a powerful man, and her vanity got to her head. Or perhaps she loved him since they had been childhood friends and years apart had changed them along with their views on each other. But Erik's a very emotional person, and was very demanding of the young prima donna, so it was only more reason to drive her into the arms of Monsieur de Chagny, who only doted upon her lovingly and wanted nothing more than her love. Though her love for music kept her with Erik until he drove the situation too far and she ended up with Raoul. So, did she love him? No. She loved his music and the attention he gave her.

I'm not quite sure if Christine loved Erik or not. She certainly loved his music, and his voice, though her feelings seemed to dim greately (well for at least a little while) after she removed Erik's mask. I think her feelings towards Erik were more lustful..

She loved Erik but she loved Raoul more. I mean she loved raoul as a husband. She loved erik because I guess she saw something in him no one else did thats another reason why he loved her so.

I know I'm in the minority, but I really do not beleive that she loved Erik. She seems to be constantly afraid of him after she learns he is really a man and not an Angel. She does not have any romantic interludes with him (I do not buy the ending of Phantom or The Phantom of Manhattan for that reason), as she thought he was her father's spirit, as this would be incestuous and Christine is always portrayed as being young and naive. I think that she really is just naive and is unable to comprehend his deep passionate love for her. I see it as a very one sided relationship.

That's an interesting take you have on it there, Darkstar. 3nodding I agree with you also, but I also agree with what Joel Schmacher had said. If that makes any sense. O.o

I want the Phantom crying but yes I agree, Christines love for Erik was a more seductive-drawn love. Very sexual, musical, and exotic. The other dude (whom I don't like scream ) was the more, ugh, romantic type....
So yes, I saw that portion just the same as that dude said...
but she should have married the phantom!! he's so sexy... and seductive.... AND HAS AN UNDERGROUND LAYER! eek can you say BATMAN IN DISGUSE?!!??! eek sorry... had to comment that simularity... sweatdrop

Well, I really don't think at the end (forgive my thieories) Christene loved Raoul, she just ended up.......well, she ended up HAVING to love him because Erik was being such a jackass and all. With the smashing of the mirrors and the "Damn you little Viper!" thing. But yes, she DID have a very sexual relationship with Erik, but it wans't just that. She had a very, well, musical-darkness thing with him. He was somebody that she could really relate to. Ack, I've out talked myself. xd
