-Ancient Arts-

Required for: School of Magic

Class Description
Students will study the different types of magic that have developed through the ages, spells associated with these techniques, and even theories that have been presented in contemporary literature and entertainment (video games, ect). Furthermore, human deviations of these (tai chi, acupuncture, ect) will be analyzed. A very intensive course.

Classroom Description
The most eclectic room in the school, the walls plastered with magic runes, sigils, and magic circles; in addition, there are various tables with magic tomes for supplemental study. The desks here are arranged in a circle facing one another for discussion purposes.

Alex crept down the hallway silently, no rush evident in his slow stride. He wasn't nervous for the class--well that was still yet to be determined. He was actually starting to enjoy these classes, it was just the company he was wary of. He had been avoiding Wei for a few weeks now and he didn't want to break his streak. But the likelihood he would be around here was slim. He was a more advanced student in the science building, he really had no business around here.

And so with that thought, Sasha walked a little faster, practically skipping to his next class. He had heard this one was kind of difficult. He had enough trouble just reading English, he didn't need anymore tricky variables. He opened the door and wandered in. No one was in. Jeez, did he come to these places at weird times?! Why did he never see anyone in his classes? Oh well, at least it won't distract him, though it might slow him down.

"Wow..." This room was very ehm well... he wasn't sure what would be a good word to describe it. It had a certain undefinable charm. It wasn't stark. It was very rich and... heck he didn't know. It was nice though. His brother needed to be here, he'd learn every answer to every question he had about magic.

Why was he here?

Shinji pondered at the question. He wasn't supposed to be here, in the basic learning building! It wasn't as if the building was forbidden from the magic master, Shinji was simply not used to leaving his little comfort zone back in the upper division. Although he was here on a purpose, to run an errand for Dante. He had done the task swiftly so he could get back to where he belong, but he couldn't help but to stop by some classrooms just out of curiosity. The one that drew him the most, of course, was the magic related classes. Shinji stopped near one of them as he heard voice coming from the classroom. Peeking in just a little, the master silently observed what was happening, only to find the room was empty...

Well, nearly empty. After a little search his eyes rested on the little lone boy that was wandering around the room (which had a rather extreme taste to his liking). Shinji frowned. Was he the only soon-to-be magic student?

Sasha was busy ogling this chart and that scroll, completely and utterly confused. Something about summons? He wasn't too sure. The elven characters were pretty though. He sighed in inevitable defeat. This was going to be a hard class. And he had no one to copy off of. Poop!

The little Russian heard the metallic click of the door and wondered if it was another student. Ohh maybe it was Nash. Or Weiyuan stalking him! Bracing himself for the worst, he turned to see who was looking in.

"Ah!" It was Professor Shinji. Well that... wasn't the worst that could happen. But already his stomach began to tighten with anxiety. "H-Hi....? Are... you..... teaching today? Or something...." Alexander stumbled over his words, making him more anxious and more tongue-tied. "A-Actually!" He took a few steps forward, almost running into a chair in his eagerness. "I had some questions... ermm finally..." He couldn't help but laugh nervously at last time he met the scary man and was too terrified and too moody to even talk.

Shinji raised an eyebrow. He didn't mean to intrude the little boy's space, neither did he expect the boy to be so nervous around him. Had he meet him before? Ah...yes, back in the magic building when he was lost with his brother, or his twin. Which one of the twin was this again? Probably the one that's less interested in magic, if he had remembered it correctly.

"I don't teach in the basic learning area." The master commented with a neutral [removed](which probably looked scary regardless to the boy). "But I can stay if you need anything."

Shifting himself into the classroom, Shinji grabbed a nearby chair and sat down. His gaze remained on the boy with a mild curiosity, waiting for him to ask any questions.

"U-Uhmm well I... " He took a moment to set his books on a nearby table, giving himself and excuse to collect himself as he began to trail off and stutter. He just did not know how to talk to teachers.

"I used to actually... believe in magic when I was little. And... I was talking with another... student..." He refused to say who as his stomach twisted anxiously. "And when... I was younger in Russia I used to try curses on my brother and they never worked and I always thought maybe I wasn't doing it right. Eventually, I stopped believing it and... when I came here. I was wondering, if those curses worked or if they are just wives' tales...." Was that too vague?

"Like, I..." Ugh this was kind of embarrassing. "I read in one of my books that... if you take the mud off someone's shoes and dry it out in your chimney, the person will also... dry out.... It didn't exactly work. There's others but.... I just... wondered if they... were real magic....."

"Hmm." Shinji raised an eyebrow. Did the humans truly think that magic could be used that way? The master never had a high opinion on humans, but this...sounds a little ridiculous to him.

"From what I know magic never work in the way you have described." Shinji replied plainly, eying the boy with an air of amusement. "Magic from each of the minor races are different from one another. But I suppose there are three broad categories." Shinji strolled over to a chair and sat himself down comfortably, then invited the other boy to sit as well. "There is offensive magic...ones you cast to destroy things, then defensive magic...ones you cast to protect yourself, and then there's healing magic, ones that work like...human doctors, I suppose, only a lot faster and a lot more energy consuming."

He paused, studying the boy to see if he actually understood what he was talking about. "the curses you speak of, if they actually work, I suppose, could fall into the offensive magic category. But...I have no knowledge of the kind of method you mentioned."

"Oh..." Alex replied glumly, his small mouth twisting into a stern pout. It was silly, but when he was a kid he thought he was someone special who could wield these little magics. Ah well. They never worked anyways, guess it wasn't anything really special.

Sasha followed after him and took a seat beside the professor. Well, not directly beside him, one chair sat between them. He liked to have a buffer zone. The little boy listened quietly to Shinji, biting at his nails out of habit. "Hmmm..." He wondered what would work for him. Probably defensive magic, he was too much of a weeny to actually get out and fight, but healing sounded booooring. Turning his head back awkwardly, Alexander looked at the chart of magics.

"Well...." He paused, squinting at the fancy script. "What kind of magic is angelic and demonic? I mean--elemental is kinda obvious but..." Would he be able to summon like a demon?! That would be sweeeet.

The master observed the boy. If he was disappointed, Shinji was not amused. Most humans tend to have misconceptions about magic, such as how they were innately evil. The true nature of magic cannot be comprehend by any means of evil, with the exception of the forbidden magics that he had practiced upon. It was...an irony, how humans condemned magic.

"Angelic and demonic? I am assuming you are talking about the race differences. To put it plainly, angelic magic are magic used by angels, and demonic used by demons. There is no significant fundamental differences, from my understanding."

"Now, if you put it in another term, light magic and dark magic (not to confuse it with angels and demons), then the meaning becomes different. Light and dark magic draws upon the power of light and darkness in nature, just like the elemental magics which draw upon natural elements. To put it broadly, light and dark magics are also a kind of elemental magic, but the power of light and darkness is a lot harder to draw upon than other elements. We consider it a higher form of elemental magic, but the humans...the school separate light and darkness from the rest of the elements."

Shinji paused, eyeing the boy. He wondered if he talked too much. It had been a while since he had talked about magic so passionately.

"Ohhh..." Wow, this was a lot more complicated than he thought. Well, he guessed that was good otherwise everyone could do it. But then again, that probably would filter him out. Merr.

Through the professor's speech, Sasha found he was leaning forward on his knees, nodding eagerly. Magic hadn't been his first pick when he'd come to this school, but with his brother now gone, he would do his best to learn for Niki's sake. "Ah, okay... Hmmm... Can... well so does that mean... like there are magics I can't learn cause I'm a human?" If that was true, it sucked to be a stupid ol' human.

"No," The master shook his head. Despite his own believes, it was not in the student's best interest to be beat down on his first magic lesson. "As you humans say, you can do anything that you believe." He paused, eyeing Alex as he moved closer, ever-so-eager to learn. "To what extent you can use the magic will be up to your ability, which comes in many factors. Such as your instinct to nature, how hard you work...etc."

"But overall magic is hard, not that I want to scare you. It is easy to lose your way when studying it, especially for a race that had been out of touch with nature for so long."

He wasn't sure about this motto. 'You can do anything that you believe.' Maybe those Americans and their dream, but not Russia. Though he supposed dreams can come true, he wouldn't be at this school if they didn't. Maybe it does work out for us humans.

"Okay cool..." Sasha wondered if he was intune with nature and s**t. Hopefully spirits counted because he was quite vocal with the one in his bedroom. He wondered if Shinji was an exorcist.

"So... what magic are you best at or... like the most... or whatever?"
PostPosted: Mon Oct 06, 2008 7:31 am

"Hm?" Shinji raised an eyebrow, then smiled, feeling a little pride rising within himself. "I'm proficient enough at all sorts of magic, at least, enough to teach you guys." The man was talented, and he had never denied himself of that. After all, it was not common, even within his race, to be able to climb to the top of a mage society in his age back then. When he was surrounded by greybeards, what more could prove that he was better than those old men who spent most of their lifetime studying magic...only to be looked down by someone much younger?

Ah, but the next form of the question was harder to answer. The master of magic fell silent, then shook his head. "I don't really know what I like the best. I wasn't in my right mind when I studied magic, so I couldn't have an opinion on them."

"Oh... okay..." Sasha let the conversation fall from there. It was probably not best to ask what in his right mind really meant. But hey, he could pick any of the magics he wanted. Well, as long as he could do it. But which one? Elemental would be pretty useful he thought, though what if he could wield dark magic?! It was a long shot and a childish dream, but what if...? Never hurt to try right?

"When do... I mean I'm not a magic student yet--but I... like when do we--they--get to pick magic? How do they know which magic they are good yet? Can you like sense it? Or is it just trial and error....?" He wasn't even admitted into the school yet and he already wanted to know so much about what he was capable of. It was one of the first times he was actually excited about something and, well, it surprised him. Snapping his mouth shut, he sat back in his chair bashfully, just now realizing how far he had scooted up to meet the professor. "Sorry... I usually don't ask many questions..."

"Oh!" He thought of one more."Ehmm ehh..." He felt kind of bad for professor Shinji having to deal with all his yammering, but that was what a teacher was for right? "Is uhmm..." Oh what was it? "Uhh summoning apart of.. any of the magic divisions? My... uhmm brother kept saying he wanted to do something about summoning. I don't really remember I... didn't really pay attention..." Sasha was starting to regret it. His brother always had a lot of useful suggestions, but he never bothered to listen. "Do you know what he's talking about...? I wasn't sure if all magic students could or if it was only certain types of magic or... what ever...." He finally stopped talking, fidgeting quietly in his seat. "I.... I think that's it..." Even if it wasn't, the little Russian stapled his mouth shut for the remainder of the class.

The master of magic looked at the boy with mild amusement. The first time he had met this boy, he was rather...disinterested in magic, wasn't he? His twin was the one that paid attention to magic. But now, the kid was bombarding him with questions, hm.

"You do ask a lot of questions, young man." Shinji tilted his head, smiling a little. "There is nothing wrong with it however." He was here to teach, and Sasha was a student, after all. "All magic start with the same fundamentals, the ability to sense nature's power and be able to control it. Be it elements, light, or darkness. For us, the minor races, this ability comes much more easily than you humans, but that is not to say it is impossible. With some aid, the sleeping potential will arise. It is then you will feel, by yourself, which power of nature comes the easiest to you. Normally, the elements are the most common, as they are more accessible than the higher forms of light and darkness. But if you are a determined hard worker, any magic is possible."

Shinji paused, taking a short break, "We do not categorize summoning as a different type of magic. It is infused into the broader categories. You will be able to summon greater forces of nature in the form of creatures, but of course, you will have to be exceedingly good at controlling magic to do so. For now, you shouldn't worry about it."

The master sighed, then looked back at Sasha. For a moment he was hopeful, that the boy would be able to use magic one day if he was this curious. Then he realized perhaps he was a little off topic. "Now, what are you supposed to be learning in this class again?"
