Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts is an action role-playing game developed and published by Squaresoft (now Square Enix) in 2002 for the PlayStation 2 video game console. It is the result of a collaboration between Square and The Walt Disney Company. The game combines characters and settings from Disney's animated features with those from the Final Fantasy series, developed by Square. The story follows Sora, a young boy, as he is thrown into an epic battle against the darkness. He is joined by Donald Duck and Goofy, classic Disney characters, who help him on his quest.
Kingdom Hearts was a departure from Square's standard role-playing games by introducing a substantial action-adventure element. In addition, it had an all-star voice cast which included many of the Disney characters' official voice actors. Kingdom Hearts was longtime Square character designer Tetsuya Nomura's first time in a directorial position.
The game was praised for its unusual combination of action and role-playing, as well as its unexpectedly harmonious mix of Square and Disney. It received numerous year-end "Best" video game awards and was a dominating presence in the 2002 holiday season and went on to achieve Sony "Greatest Hits" status. Since its release, Kingdom Hearts has sold over 5.6 million copies worldwide and has been followed by two sequels.Three more titles are currently being developed, which have a connection to a future, unannounced game.
The Series:
-Kingdom Hearts
-Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
-Kingdom Hearts II
-Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
-Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days
-Kingdom Hearts: Coded
Characters
Sora - The primary protagonist of the Kingdom Hearts series, and the character that the player has direct control over throughout almost the entire series. He is an original character created by Tetsuya Nomura for the Kingdom Hearts series. Sora's weapon is the Keyblade. Though not the original wielder of the Keyblade, Sora was chosen over Riku because Sora chose light, while Riku opened himself to darkness.
At the beginning of the series, Sora is 14 years old and lives on Destiny Islands along with his two friends, Riku and Kairi. When their world is attacked by a group of corrupted hearts known as the Heartless, the three are separated. During the invasion, he obtains the Keyblade. Soon after, Sora meets Donald Duck and Goofy, who join him on his search for his friends. To blend in with the inhabitants of the various worlds they visit, the group's appearances are altered by either Donald's magic or, in Kingdom Hearts II, by Sora's magical clothes. Some examples include a dolphin-like merman and a brown lion cub.
Riku: Sora and Kairi's best friend and an original character created by Tetsuya Nomura for the Kingdom Hearts series. He was originally meant to be the true keyblade master, but when he submitted himself to darkness, his heart was not strong enough to wield the keyblade, and thus it chose Sora as its wielder.
At the beginning of the series, he is 15 years old and lives on Destiny Islands with his friends. When their world is attacked by the Heartless, the three are separated. Riku ends up at Hollow Bastion where he is found by Maleficent. Under her influence, he becomes an antagonist to help Kairi.
Upon learning to channel the darkness within him, he forged it into a sword, the Soul Eater. This later becomes the Way to the Dawn keyblade. He also wielded the Dark Keyblade, a unique keyblade able to unlock people's hearts and amplify the darkness within them.
Kairi: One of three original characters appearing in Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. Kairi lives on Destiny Islands along with her companions, Sora and Riku, although it is established early on that she is not a native of them. She is 14 at the start of Kingdom Hearts. She bears no memory of her life before the Islands, and Kairi's mysterious past sparks curiosity in Sora and Riku, who are anxious to leave Destiny Islands and see other worlds. This leads the trio to build a raft in the hopes of traveling to other worlds. However, before they can leave, their Islands are attacked by the Heartless, and the three are split up. She then becomes the game's driving force, as much of the game's story centers around Sora's and Riku's attempts at finding Kairi.
