It was the biting n** to the air that was to blame for her nostalgia, reminding her of frozen peaks and fields of blazing white that she'd frolicked through for so long. Without warning, she felt so much older despite the fact she knew so little of the world outside the mountains. Why had she wandered from their icy comfort? At first, it'd been to shed her self-imposed isolation and to meet more Soquili of the world, to learn of the land and life outside the mountains. But... It seemed, save for helping a few wandering souls, she'd remained as secluded and aloof as ever. She didn't mind being alone, and never had, but as the mare gazed quietly out at the mountains as she grazed, she had to wonder--had anything changed? She had learned, and found pleasure in what few souls she'd come across in these vast plains, but her heart still doubted.

With an inaudible sigh, the unicorn delicately arched her neck to steal a bite of grass, braided tail flicking faintly to send golden tassels dancing near her ivory hooves. What private, selfish thoughts she had. She'd hoped, one day, that she'd be able to grow closer to another, to fully open her heart and feel truly comfortable in their presence. Her years of solitude left her awkward and often quiet, and she quietly admired those with enough courage to openly engage others in conversation. Sometimes, she was left floundering on just what to talk about. The weather only served as a good topic for so long.... then it was replaced by uneasy silence and mental blanks.

A light toss of her head sent the chains around her neck jingling delicately, and her frozen eyes eventually dropped from the mountains to flicker across the fields. There were small rustles here and there in the tall grass, likely from rabbits and other tiny creatures. Other than that, she'd done a good job of secluding herself once more, Feryal noted with a wry, private smile. Well, no matter. Perhaps this day would prove to be different, and she'd have the chance to try her hand again at this socializing business.

A stallion was not that far away from her, enjoying the cool, clean air. He was a polite stallion without enough winters on him to be old or even wise. His mother had been unhappy with the world with a strong desire to change it. Her son, she raised a gentleman, determined that at least he would have some manners. He saw nothing wrong with it himself. It was different, an ever-changing current of interesting places and creatures. After making sure his mother was taken care of, he had pulled away from her to pursue his interests, to see if he could make his mark on the world. He wanted to do something great with his life but couldn't do that easily at home.

A soft jingling of metals caught his attention, reminding him of dance. His ears perked, swiveling forward with interest. A slow trot carried him forward faster than a walk but hopefully not fast enough to cause alarm. He had a knack for adventure but usually never found the gold. He wasn't quite sure what "prize" he had been searching for but when his curiosity pricked, he was drawn over. It was another opportunity to find it. And those he never passed up.

((I hope you'll forgive me D; I haven't RPed at Soq so I'm a little bad at it xD; ))

The cadence of hoof beats stilled her movements, and a look of polite puzzlement slowly settled upon the mare's features. Why, had she overlooked someone? Her eyes flickered more quickly now, alert and perhaps a hint uneasy--she'd heard rumors of Kalona and even Skinwalkers roaming these lands, and she certainly was no warrior. If there was danger, well.... the best option would be to seek a hasty retreat. It was then that she saw him, the dark shape of the stallion shifting closer. It was the jewelry around his neck that caught her eye, as well as the golden embellishment that marked his left foreleg. Feryal relaxed slowly--he didn't look dangerous--and nickered a greeting.

"Forgive me, I didn't realize I wasn't alone." She bowed her head a little in greeting while an distant smile pulled at the corners of her muzzle. "It's gotten colder out, hasn't it?" There she went again, referring to the dratted weather. Well, maybe it'd serve as a stepping stone to something a little more important.

((Nooo, you're just fine! Don't even worry about it though, I still have some trouble myself. xD <3))

The jingling belonged to a palomino, the winter season seemingly projected at him from her sides. His eyes did not bother to find what on her person jingled as it wasn't polite to stare, so he'd been taught. He smiled at her. "It is easily forgiven. I myself did not realize my surroundings." He took a polite look about with her weather comment, taking it all in. In honesty, he had consumed himself with thoughts, plans, and goals that he hadn't given the weather a substantial thought past the refreshing breeze. "Oh I didn't notice it was colder here, to be honest. I'm new to the area." Really, it was more like just passing through. He hadn't found anything to keep him in one place but simply things to pull him left and right. And there was enough of him to be embarrassed to admit that he was not stationed. Many his mother's age looked down on the traveling rogue to impress shame in that area onto him.

He himself usually relied upon the situation to find a topic. However, looking around, the situation in which they found himself supplied little to him other than weather. Which had already been covered. Darn. What else was he supposed to say? "Oh the grazing looks nice today"? Yeah, that totally wasn't awkward conversation at all. He didn't want to walk away. Curiosity had pulled him here but it was more out of a desire to talk to someone, not just investigate.

"Are you? Well, I suppose that makes two of us." She chuckled faintly, her tail flicking with thought. "But... I'm glad to see someone else doesn't mind a bit of cold. It gets very hot down here." It seemed like such a trivial thing, truly... but emerging from the whipping ice storms straight into the sweltering heat of summer had just about done her in, and she wasn't eager for another experience any time soon. He was polite--almost extremely so, but Feryal found herself growing comfortable. It was a change, certainly, for her to keep up the conversation, but a much needed one. If he was willing to be patient while she awkwardly attempted to advance things, well, she'd think him a saint! "Nevertheless, it's nice to meet a new face. I'm Feryal."

She didn't think she'd ever met another wandering soul before--the few she'd spoken to had often started families within these lands, and had been happy to share their tales of happiness with her. "If I may.... Where do you hail from if not here?" Surely not the mountains, and besides from there, her knowledge was pathetically limited.

He smiled warmly. So he couldn't get any information about the area off of her but that was fine. Right now, a conversation would give him something to do. And he'd never do anything to hurt someone's feelings on purpose. "My name is Beaumains," he said with a bow of his head. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Feryal."

"Well, I'm from near the sea, where the Kelpie are more common. Oftentimes, we'd go to the shore just to relax. You can get many a nice cool breeze off of the ocean, much like this. Just the air's a bit more salty there," he said with a smile. "But yes, some times it can get hot enough you dare not move for the fear of creating more body heat. But what about you? What parts do you call home? Or are you a bit of an adventurer?" He of course, minded neither although if he could journey with someone for a while, it would be nice. Sometimes, he found himself so lonely, he was forced to talk to himself for company and sanity - although some would claim that that was just the opposite.

Interesting name... She didn't brood on it, instead satisfying for a thoughtful flick of her tail. "Likewise, Beaumains." The mare repeated carefully, letting her tongue get a handle on the new string of syllables to prevent slaughtering them in the future. Wouldn't that be embarrassing... Her frozen eyes seemed to widen a little at the mention of Kelpies and the ocean, as though politely puzzled by such an image. "The sea.... I've never been." The unicorn admitted after a moment, a smile pulling again at her lips. "I'll have to look one day, if the sun doesn't bake me to a crisp first."

Her ears flicked quietly for a moment before she answered his next question. "I come from the mountains. Lately though, yes, I suppose I've become something of a nomad. I do miss them, though. I was just thinking about why I'd wandered away from them in the first place before I spotted you." She chuckled to herself, amused, and gave a gentle shake of her head. "It's nice to find someone who wanders, too. If I may, do you have a reason for it? I came here... well, I suppose to decide just what kind of life flourished outside the peaks."

He smiled, amused himself at the idea that they had come from two very different places only to end up in the same place. It was a funny coincidence but bound to happen that he would meet someone from her side of the world. "I've never been to the mountains," he admitted in turn. "I certainly wouldn't mind seeing it either. Although I must admit on my part, with the cool air I don't much miss my home." It felt almost mean for him to be admitting that but he saw no reason to hide the truth from her.

He flushed just a little at her question because he did not have a heroic answer. And of course, a hero in some shape or form was what he wished he could be. Sadly he wasn't the most extroverted kind of guy that might be needed for such an occupation. "I wander to find my purpose," he said. "I suppose I'm looking for an answer to the same question you have."

At her last statement, a sort of answer to her question, he smiled a bit in mirth, an idea to try and ...liven the conversation as he had failed to do so thus far. "And is life flourishing for you? I mean, the life you see outside of the peaks. Or are we a rather dull sort of creature?" He imagined that anyone else was a whiles away and she'd be his best choice of company. Not that he minded. He didn't see a character flaw that bothered him. Rather, it was simply encouragement to try and make the meeting last longer.

"No?" She murmured almost to herself, not wanting to interrupt his train of thought. So he'd never visited the frozen peaks... Well, not many had. She'd wandered alone for so long through the snowy forests without seeing another Soquili... Of course, she might have not been looking so closely, but that was besides the point. "Mm, at least one can still warm themselves in the cold... It seems harder to cool down in the heat. But, the mountains have their flaws as well. It gets very lonely sometimes." She could be honest as well; each place would undoubtedly have its flaws.

Something in her eyes glinted a little at his embarrassment, both surprised and amused. Had she hit a sore spot...? Her mirth faded at that, though his answer seemed steady enough. "It's... confusing." Feryal admitted after a moment. "I came to meet others, to learn more, but I only seem to be growing more and more confused. I suppose it's silly." She laughed a little to herself and gave another light shake of her head, sending the golden reins around her neck jingling again. "Until I met you, that is. It finally seems like I have something in common with someone else." And what a relief that was.

His question surprised her into a soft chuckle. "Oh, no, I've found you're all quite interesting. I'm afraid it's me who's rather dull. I have no real history, no family... It feels as though I've been blissfully wrapped up in ignorance until now. Does that sound strange?"

He tried to think of all the ways he had tried to cool down on an overly hot day and smiled at some of the more amusing ideas he had pursued. "It is much easier although I think it probably helps to have extra body heat." Of course, he only said that because he had only used that strategy to keep warm as a foal and had found it quite successful if not comforting. "But why's it confusing? I don't think you're silly." He was generally interested in her problem. Her character was different but interesting and he couldn't help but being drawn to her. Whether it was that uniqueness or simply her damsel-esque conversation, he wasn't quite sure. But he didn't spend the time trying to figure out which it was.

Beaumains smiled, chuckling lightly and hoping he was being comforting. "Well everyone has something in common with someone else. But I know what you mean. Anyway, blissful ignorant is something others tend to wish they had at least once in their life. And I think we've done more talking about you than me that technically, I think that makes me the boring one."

Feryal mused over that for a moment, eventually offering a slow and absent nod as her head. "I suppose it would. I don't think I've ever tried that method, to be honest. Trotting through the snow always worked well enough." Not to mention there hadn't been anyone to share warmth with. "It must be nice, though..." A smile quirked at her muzzle, though she ducked her head somewhat to mask it. Goodness, look at her, acting like a foal. "Mm... I'm not so good with conversation as I thought I would be. Everyone I've met seems so... content. Some have raised families, others are closely knitted within their own social groups..." Feryal eyed him for a moment, hardly aware that she'd relaxed almost entirely. It seemed to easy to talk with him, and she was grateful for his company.

"Not at all." The unicorn laughed and shook her head, genuinely amused. "Why, it sounds like you've had all sorts of adventures--both at home, and on your travels. Tell me, Beaumains, do you have any family?" There; it'd been easy enough to transfer the conversation, especially since she was curious about just all the things he'd done and seen.

Beaumains tried to hide his wince as she commented about families and social groups. He valued them enough but yet didn't have one to belong to. He had abandoned his mother so he had no family. And he had found no group to call his own. "While travel and adventure I have, family I lack," he said, unable to at least hide that it did indeed matter. "Adventures seem so... hollow without them."

He didn't even realize what he said until he said it. But as much as he wanted to take it back to save himself embarrassment, he couldn't because it felt like the truth. It struck a cord in him like it was the driving reason for his adventures, that he needed to find one that would be fulfilling and remove the emptiness the others left him with. He had believed since he was little that they were important and for him. So he needed to be full to feel that he had not let himself down, that while in the eyes of others he succeeded, he did not fail in his own. "Sorry..." He said. He did not mean to put a damper on conversation.

((sorry for taking a while xD; ))

She couldn't quite miss the subtle change in his expression, and her ears tilted back a fraction with worry. Had she pryed too deeply? Feryal found herself twisted with indecision, unsure whether to apologize and backtrack, or to let him continue. In the end, she was silent, though an expression of uncertainty had settled across her features. "...I see... So you're very much alone, like I am." Despite her welling sympathy, the mare was incredulous that he'd practically spoken her own, hidden feelings.

"It's hardly an adventure when thre's no one to return home to." Feryal said gently, reaching out to gently touch at his neck with her nose to try and offer some comfort. "That's the reason that I wonder why I left the mountains at all." The silence fell then, and she merely shook her head with a faint smile at his apology. No, he had no reason to be sorry; loneliness was a terrible thing, terrible enough to drive her from the lands she loved into more dangerous realms all in the hope of finding comfort and company.

"Beaumains?" The mare had been silent until the name burst forth hurriedly, almost as though she was afraid she'd lose the courage to ask should she dally any longer. "Would you allow me to accompany you on your travels?" She fixed him with her frozen eyes, feeling more like a foolish filly instead of the mare she'd matured into. "I... I believe you know these lands far better than myself, and if you wouldn't mind my company..." The worst he could say was no, and she inwardly braced herself for it--what else could she expect for throwing out such a suggestion?

((Not a problem! <3))
PostPosted: Thu Sep 04, 2008 12:36 pm

Beaumains frowned. Wow, he had brought the conversation down to a sore spot and boy did he feel bad about that. Wasn't very gentlemanly was it? "I would... well I would rather like to have you accompany me." There was something about the way she touched his neck that made him feel suddenly embarrassed again. "We're much in the same fix, I see. But maybe we could help each other get out of it." He had not thought until this moment as his adventuring to have a problem but having it now been thus exposed, he felt not just a need to temporarily throw a blanket over it but to eventually remove it. "I hope I can at least be of some company to you."

It took more will power than it should have to hold back a sigh of relief, though she offered a grateful smile to the stallion. "Thank you... Yes, that's what I hope. It won't seem nearly so daunting with another at your side." For her, as well. Funny to think she, at least for now, would no longer be just a loner. "And I as well for you. We've seen to gotten along so far, though, so... Let's hope for the best." With a toss of her head, the mare flicked her tail thoughtfully and perked her ears. "Were you headed anywhere in particular, or just wherever your hooves would take you?
