The end of summer was nearing. Bright blue eyes stared out at the flower fields as the grass had started to change color. All the summer flowers had started to flit away as it grew closer and closer to Autumn.
Standing on a small branch, high up in a tree. Roxy sighed lightly as she watched the clouds roll across the sky on the horizon. She hated the Autumn and Winter months. That meant she had to find shelter in the forest to escape the bitter cold. And there was no real thrill in living in a cave. At least not for her anyway. Others could do it, but it was a hard concept for her to grasp.
Her mind wandered to her family for a moment. It had been a long time since she'd seen her mate. And just as long since she'd seen her children. Well, Olivia came by every now and then. But the others--well what was their excuse?
Puffing out her cheeks, she fluttered her wings and zipped down to the grass below. Landing delicately on a blade of grass that bent beneath her small weight. Moving up and down before it stopped so that she could look out amongst the tops of the jungle like grass.

The normally cheery stallion was uncharacteristically downtrodden as he trudged through the tall plants of a vast, sunny hillside, a heavy limp hindering his walk, and a slight cringe accompanying every stumble in his pace. The attack on his herd had been swift and sharp, although he had come away with perhaps the least damage of those injured... but he didn't feel lucky.
Kazuko had, for once, been repectful of his father's rare solemn mood, and refrained from his usual pranks and teasing for the past few days. Nahuel was grateful, but... all the same, it felt like someone had died. Granted, some members of their herd had come close, but he was most upset that Missus Amaya had turned on them like that.
He simply couldn't understand it. He had seen kindness in her eyes, he knew he had... so what had happened? No matter what Sukari thought... no matter what Nanaki may have believed... Nahuel could not, in good conscience, believe that the eccentric unikalona had meant them harm from the very beginning. Perhaps he was foolish, and yes, he was naive... but it had served him well in the past, had it not?
A soft sigh tumbled from the stallion's mouth as his ears drooped, and he continued on his way through the grassy fields. He had not seen his little girls in weeks, and his beautiful mate seemed to be eluding him, however unintentionally. He missed her, now more than ever, and found himself yearning for her playfully tossed insults, the cheerful banter that they shared, as well as the loving touches.
A soft nicker arose from his throat as cerulean eyes cleared a bit, searching the weeds hopefully for any sign of his butterfly.

Ears and wings twitched as the sound of a soft and very familiar nicker reached the Flutter's ears. Her head snapped quickly in it's direction. Black curls bouncing along her shoulders as those bright blue eyes landed on a large, dark figure with the soft blue hair she had come to use as a small nesting place came into view.
Her heart nearly skipped a beat. It could only be her mate. Unless he had a twin, but he'd never told her of such things. Plus this little field was fairly remote and hardly anyone knew about it. And if they did they had merely stumbled through unknowingly.
But the limp in his step caught her eye quickly. A heavy frown appeared upon her tinted lips. Had he gotten himself into some kind of trouble again? She'd warned him before of such foolish things, but oh well.
Fluttering off of her perch, her wings giving off a soft humming noise before the little Flutter's size started to grow rapidly. Black hooves touching the ground as she gave her long tail a flick. Wings opening and closing a few times as she made her way quickly over to him. A heavily worried look on her face. "Nahuel!"

"Roxy, love!"
His gaze instantly brightened into a warm, happy glow as the melodic voice of the little butterfly mare he loved so dearly pierced the silence, calling his name as she grew in size and hurried towards him. He, in turn, increased his pace, stumbling a few times in his haste to reach her side, but reaching her a moment later with an ecstatic grin. Reaching out to nuzzle her forehead affectionately, he blinked once as he realized she was not exactly in the same state of bliss as he.
Oh. His injuries.
His smile turned sheepish as he contemplated the best way to broach the subject- perhaps skirting around the truth would be better than actually recounting to her what had happened. But then... Kazuko would undoubtedly let slip what had really happened, and then he would be neck deep in trouble. He should probably just tell the truth, and try to remove any unnecessary details.
Besides, Nahuel was never any good at lying.
"Eh, heh..." he chuckled nervously, shifting his weight foolishly onto his injured foreleg and suppressing a yelp when pain shot up the offended limb. "It's not as bad as it looks, love." It was a weak reassurance, but he didn't quite feel up to recounting the entire event unprompted when he knew it would scare her.
"How have you been?"

A small smile came to her lips as he nuzzled her forehead. Giving him a nuzzle of her own beneath his chin and fluttering her wings. Same old goof with that same silly grin. But that silly grin was one of the things she loved about her lug.
Pursing her lips, she squinted an eye at him. Giving her wings a quick flick and an ear a perk. Roxy could tell that he was skirting around what really happened. It was just one of those things that she had always been able to pick up with people. And with Nahuel it always seemed to run rampant blowing whistles and waving flags.
For the moment she'd not poke at it. At least too much.
"Lonely. You've been gone for so long and the children don't really come around all that often anymore."

The unhindered bliss seeped back into his expression as she returned his loving gesture, nuzzling into her curly mane and breathing a soft sigh of contentment. She could always make him feel like all was right with the world, no matter what kind of unhappiness he harbored... although, come to think of it, he never really was unhappy anyway, but that was beside the point.
A flicker of remorse showed plainly on his expressive features as she admitted her loneliness, nipping her ear gently and nuzzling her cheek in quiet apology. That was entirely his fault, he supposed... he should have made more time for her, perhaps dragged Kazu out with him to visit more often.
"I'm sorry, love... I'll try not to stay away for so long anymore."
Despite the honest words, he couldn't help but feel glad that she hadn't been present in the bloody escapade with the unikalona. He hadn't been able to protect himself, and heaven only knew what he would have done if Amaya had turned her fangs on Kazuko. He had never been violent like Sukari, courageous like Nanaki, or strong like his father... so if he had to carry the burden of not being able to help his son in that event, he had no idea how he would have coped.
Perhaps now he could better understand the weight that some of his other herd members carried.
Eyes suddenly sad as he thought of the extended family that he had been forced to watch be torn apart, he laid his chin over Roxanne's small head, breathing another soft, discontented sigh.

The mare puffed out her cheeks, furrowing her eyebrows as she gave a small toss of her head. Black curls bouncing against her neck and shoulders. "Well I hope you keep your word. I've missed you terribly and then you come back to me all limping and hiding secrets. I don't know if I should let you go anywhere on your own anymore."
Roxanne had really no clue what had happened. She was half curious to know. But the other half of her kind of didn't want to. And what of Kazuko? Had he been around when whatever had happened, happened? She couldn't really think how she might of handled her mate and her baby boy hurt.
She quieted a moment as he lay his head atop her own. A solemn sigh coming from his lips made her frown. "What's troubling you, love?"

"Aw, don't say that," a bit of good humor curled the corners of his mouth upwards, nudging the top of her head with a bit of playfulness. "I'm a big boy, after all. Father and everything. But I guess I wouldn't complain if you came with me everywhere."
He quieted at her concerned inquiry, cerulean hues darkening in worry as he thought of how best to answer.
"I... um..." he hesitated, glancing downwards and (for once) considering his words carefully. "We had a run in with a not-so-friendly soquili." There. That was open-ended enough. He didn't specify that it was a kalona, and was still telling enough of the truth that there shouldn't be any further questions, as long as she believed him.
"Kazu's fine, I just got a little scraped up... but a few other members of the herd took quite a beating." He thought of Sukari, how she'd saved him, how she was rescued by a family he never knew she had, and how her happiness was almost stripped from her as she found out she was with child shortly after the attack. His brow creased in worry once more, and his gaze lowered to rest upon his beloved mate's head.
"Roxy... if there was danger for some reason, you would run and keep yourself out of trouble, right?"

"Big boy and father or not you still seem to get yourself into trouble." She squinted an eye at him again. Though not like he would be able to see it. Go with him everywhere? Well it may just end up being that way. Roxanne had grown tired of sticking around this place for so long and not know what went on while her mate and son were away. It made her worry.
An eyebrow raised. "Not-so-friendly Soquili? What do you mean by a not-so-friendly Soquili?" Now she had really gotten interested in just what had happened. And in the back of her mind a little voice was just babbling on one word. Kalona. Those were really the only kinds of not-so-nice she could think off. Course there were Skinwalkers, but they always seemed to keep to themselves more often than not. Plus they were few in number for the time being. Kalona were everywhere.
The mare wondered what brought about his question. And she thought about it for a moment. Nibbling on her bottom lip quietly. "I suppose it would depend on the situation."
