Since Michiko was very little when she died this story will start with how Michiko died and go into her life in Rukon gai that led to her spot in the Gotei 13. Hope I can get some of this down every now and again ^^;

Note: The time in this story is unspecified and details of technology is vague, but let's say the fact that Michiko ages to look 17 and died at around 4 says she spends a lot of time in Soul Society =/ Sorry if my time judgement is off.

Part 1, Earth

~On the Atlantic Ocean off the shores of France~

Leaning over the bottom rail, a little girl waved as they passed a larger ship, giggling as some of the festively dressed noblemen smiled and waved back. Grinning broadly she turned and called, "Mama, come see the big boat!" Bouncing on deck, she turned to look out to them again, wondering how all those people could fit on a boat, no matter how big it was she couldn't comprehend it.

"Oh, Michi, don't jump near the rail like that," her mother said rushing over to pick the 4 year old up and lift her away from the edge of the boat.

Putting her down again a safe distance away, Michiko clutched at her mother's skirt, and with a face brimming in distress bawled, "But why mama?"

Sighing, her mother flicked Michiko's bangs out of her eyes, and said, "Because I don't want the sea to go and eat you up, silly." Giggling as her mother waved her arms and made claw-like gestures as though the sea was a looming beast awaiting them she soon forgot her interest in the other boat and bouncing on the edge of the deck.

Their family was traveling the world by the oceans, Michiko's father finally having saved up enough money for the boat and the trip. Her mother had thought it risky to bring their four-year-old daughter along but they hadn't been able to find a suitable friend to watch her back home so she was along for the ride. They were glad for it, regardless, since Michiko was so excited by it all.

Having finished touring through Europe they were bound towards the Americas, and the skip across the pond, so to say was their next obstacle.

~Mid-Atlantic Ocean~

A week had passed since the Tsukinos' boat has left the harbour they last docked at in France. Michiko sat in the boat's cabin in her usual perrywinkle blue jumper, kicking her feet about while looking at the unchanging seascape out the window. Her mother was asleep in the bed room and her father had left the cabin and was probably busy on deck, and thus she was left alone again. Pouting, Michiko hugged her plush parrot tight, and hopped down from her seat, and headed up onto deck.

Coming out of the cabin, Michiko pranced towards the bow, leaning over the rail as she liked to do, or at least when her mother wasn't looking. The only other creatures she could see for miles were the gulls sailing above them as they sailed below. It was then when one flew overhead and dropped something onto their vessel.

Jumping back in surprise as something landed on deck with a thud, Michiko waited a moment in suspicion before investigating herself. Tangled in seaweed, she reached and took the item in hand. It was her father's hat, sopping wet and smelling of fish. "Papa?" She said, confused, finally noticing he didn't seem to be on deck now that she looked. Terrified suddenly that he was missing, Michiko ran down to the cabin, wailing at the top of her lungs to her mother.

((I think I'm gonna do a doodle of lil' Michi, even though that doesn't fit in with the Creative Writing section it goes with the story))

~Mid-Atlantic Ocean~

We used to live in Japan, but I don't remember that well. Mother likes to tell of a little beach where we used to go but it rings no bells in my memories. All I've ever remembered is traveling with my parents. Carefree, fun and safe. That wistfulness, that security, that happy life came crumbling down as I went down in to the cabin and found my mother face down on the floor, with a knife in her back.

Michiko stood stalk still in the centre of the cabin, too afraid to run to her mother on the floor. Face blanched, eyes wide, her attention suddenly went to a rustle of the sails up above deck. Something possessed her to try her fears and turn to back above deck that day, because she didn't even hesitate at it.

Running up the steps back up to the deck, Michiko peeked around the corner hearing two voices coming from outside.

"It was a bloody waste of time, I say. Nothing worth the effort on board!"

"Ah c'mon, the boat will be worth something on some markets."

"This piece of filth? Not worth the clothes on my back I'd say. Killing 'em was a waste of time I say."

A chill ran down Michiko's spine, even as a little kid she understood that much. These were the bad guys. Afraid to come out, she shrunk back towards the cabin, only to trip backwards on the first step. Landing with a thud the two voices stopped and she could hear footsteps coming her way now. Running from the cabin door out onto deck, Michiko ran away from where she heard the bad men, towards the back of the boat.

~Mid-Atlantic Ocean~

The two strangers followed her, she could hear their pursuing footsteps. Missing a step and tripping in the edge of her jumper Michiko fell, landing sprawled across the floor. Trying to get herself back up she slipped again, hitting her jaw and biting her tongue. "Ow, she said, though the tears in her eyes were forming because of the fear, not the little pain.

"What do we 'ave here, a lil' ease droppa'?" The first face came close behind her, his tone mocking.

"Aww, she shakin', we should stop that for her, if ya no what I means," the second voice said, closer than the first, laughing after his threat.

Terrified, Michiko pushed herself to her feet, successfully this time, and ran towards the rail, trying to find somewhere else to go. Turning around wide eyed she saw the men behind her advancing. The one to her right was brandishing a long knife like the one in her mother's back, the other was weaponless, but grinning all the same. Flattening herself against rail she glanced to both sides looking for an escape.

"No where left t' go, sweetie," The one with the knife said, his pointy toothed smile widening as her eyes did too.

Without even meaning to, panicking so much as it was, the little girl leaned too far back over rail, and slid over it, plummeting backwards towards the water.

~Mid-Atlantic Ocean~

Landing in the water with a splash, the cold of the water ebbed at her own heat. The plush parrot in her hand, once forgotten by the fear of the strange happenings of the day she now clung to as though it were a rope to safety. kicking and scrambling in the water, Michiko tried to stay above the surface. It was hopeless, she couldn't swim.

"Looks like the lil' runt took care 'f herself, mate," one said looking over the rail a bit bewildered.

"Better off for us then, less work, now let's turn this around and latch it to our ship," The other called, not having bothered to see the child's misfortune. Soon the one at the rail vanished from sight and Michiko was alone, head bobbing up and down, trying to get some air.

Legs kicked slower, exhausted from the frantic movement, and this time she couldn't make it back up to the surface. Scared, she opened her mouth to scream, instead it filled with water and she started to choke. Her grip on her toy loosened as her hands went her throat, trying to will it to help breathe but she was too far under. Everything going black, she couldn't see anymore and soon she went cold as her soul left her body.

floating there for a moment she could see herself there, sinking in the water, and ahead a light that seemed much more welcoming, heading towards it it didn't seem she needed to swim to get there. Finally she was gone from the water, gone from what happened as she came out on the other end, somewhere warm and dry.
