It was close to dusk when the screaming had started, and the heat of the sun had given way to the considerably cooler night. She'd managed to land the first blow on the enraged buck, dancing just out of reach with glittering eyes and a bloodied mouth. Those could be dangerous, those antlers of his! He was a fine, healthy beast, well in his prime, and the sneering mare knew she'd have to be clever to trip him up. "That's pretty, but I bet you can sing higher than that!" She gleefully noted, lashing out with her hooves as the stag threatened her vulnerable underside with his horns. Oh, oh, better not let him get too close! Her slender build had been inherited from her grandmother, rendering her at a disadvantage when it came to size. But that was fine. It just meant she had to be a little smarter and a little faster than the rest!

And then, she found it--the opening that let her lunge forward and sink her teeth deep into his bellowing throat. The stag screamed again before he choked, her thrashing tail flailing wildly at his legs to better force him to his knees. She held fast like a lion, suffocating the beast slowly until the minute tremors of his muscles ceased. Only then did she release him, giving herself a shake that stirred her mane, rustled her wings, and snapped her tail to-and-fro. It'd been a successful hunt, even if she'd have preferred to play with her food just a little while longer. No sense in putting herself at risk though, even she knew that much.

Hungrily, the young mare settled over the still-warm body to fully appreciate the fruits of her labor. Despite her appetite, her ears flicked occasionally to catch the sounds of the forest and monitor her surroundings. It just wouldn't do to be surprised while catching a bite to eat, huh? Unlike some Kalona, she didn't mind others being around--but not if they had plans to make off with her meal.

Lessia was intrigued.

Today, like most days, had begun with the usual sun-in-eyes wake up call; she'd proceded to track down her traveling companion of choice, the alicorn Seyx, then the two of them had done a bit of prowling around central river region. If Lessia was able to keep to her master plan, eventually she would have covered the entire landscape, from the ocean to the mountains and the desert beyond; as things currently stood, she was barely a third of the way through the forest, but that third was as familiar to her as her own backyard.

Indeed, it WAS her own backyard. Unlike many winged Soquili, she preferred to actually walk her territory; unlike many grounded Soquili, she eschewed the concept of a single, defensible 'home territory'. The world was her oyster, and she would cover it in time, one day at a time.

Seyx was an admirable companion for prowling; his inquisitive nature and boundless energy was an excellant match for her own; his laid-back and relaxed demeanor meant that he was always willing to do what she wanted and go where she felt like going. He was also her closest childhood friend, and she loved the anxiety their friendship had the potential to create among the unaware; after all, SHE looked every bit a kalona, and he...

Well, he was a part flutter, smallish, dainty alicorn who wasn't even as tall as her. But really, he was just that awesome. Mostly.

On one topic, and one topic only, they had agreed to disagree. Lessia, like her mother before her, ate meat, and Seyx could not in good conscience approve of what he saw as needless killing and bloodshed. Grass was good enough for almost all Soquilis, and even if she DID have fangs, there was no reason she couldn't manage with just grass. It worked for her father, after all!

Lessia herself was aware of all of these facts, and she couldn't deny that a part of her felt shame every time she killed. But inevitably, the need for meat would return and she would once again find herself on the hunt, nostrils wide and teeth gleaming as she raced after her prey. And besides, it wasn't like she would EVER go after a Soquili!

It was with just such thoughts in mind that she had split from Seyx in the early evening, both knowing but neither acknowledging the true reason for the separation. Seyx would distance himself from the inevitable hunt, and Lessia could eat without worry of disturbing anyone else's gentler sensibilities. Or that was the theory, anyway.

She had been prowling swiftly through the trees, dark wings wrapping her pale body for camoflague, when she'd first heard the skriek. Frenzied, panicked...definitely something in dire straits; non-Soquili or sentient, so she had nothing to be anxious about on that front. And after a short span of time, it was quiet; the stillness and lack of rushing feet indicated that whatever it was, it had lost its fight. Which meant that something had won.

Which meant, quite probably, that it would be a good idea to avoid the direction that the sound had been coming from. After all, if there was one thing that she knew from personal experience, it was that hunters didn't usually like to share. Which in and of itself was a pity; she wanted to see what it had been.

Her sharp, but powerful teeth made quick work of troublesome bone and tough hide, and the entire corpse shuddered from the savagery of her feasting. Yeah, it was gross, but who cared? A little blood never hurt anyone, even if it made her feel entirely too sticky. That was why rivers had been made! Theia tore her attention away from her meal long enough to chew, sanguine eyes roaming idly across the dark expanse of trees that kept her hidden from any wandering eyes. Or did they? She couldn't help but feel like someone else was out there. With a thoughtful swish of her tail, the young mare listened carefully for sounds of movement. She wasn't at all afraid--anything that thought to mess with her was in for a big surprise--but maybe it was a familiar face. Not that she knew hardly anyone outside her family besides Kosomot, and she'd assumed he'd have headed back to the mountains, or wherever it was that he'd said he'd come from.

But no... Whatever it was, it was pretty pale; a ghost skulking silently through the trees. She snorted softly, lowering her head to snatch another mouthtful of meat before returning her attention to the silent stranger. "You just gonna watch, or you wanna come out here and say hello?" Came the croon, followed soon by a more private snicker as Theia gave her head a shake. Well, she didn't really care who it was. Lesser or no, she had a meal already to deal with... and if her family thought it was obscene to speak with anything other than a fully blooded Kalona, then tough luck! What did it matter, so long as she knew she was the best?

"Promise I won't bite... Nothing more than a love nibble, anyway." Bloodied teeth bared themselves in an amused grin before she returned to her meal. It wouldn't bother her either way if she was left alone to dine or if she had some company to share the night with. It was horribly boring to be by oneself all the time, after all--and who had the time to make sure each and every Soquili was a full Kalona? Hell, they seemed so scarce! And Theia had no intention of living her life as a hermit.

Rule number one when dealing with a kalona: never take them at their word when meeting them for the first time. This fact had been drilled into Lessia's head from the time she was a small filly, with both her half-kalona father and her pure kalona mother wanting their children to understand that just because their family was...well, nice, most weren't. The last thing that any parent would want to hear was that one of their children had been murdered, after all!

Unlike her father or either of her siblings, Lessia looked a full-blood kalonaand consequently had the least to fear from appearances alone; however, appearances weren't everything, and she had inherited her father's slightly off-kilter sense of humor and developed a somewhat reckless manner when it came to dealing with others. Taking all of these facts in stride, when the victorious killer spoke out there was a brief struggle between 'common sense' and 'common' sense.

And, as usual, Lessia decided to deal with things her own way. Never mind that she (as of yet) hadn't seen the speaker, nevermind that she knew the speaker to be in possession of a new kill. She herself wasn't going to jump to conclusions about someone else's nature when they were literally opening the door to a conversation...and besides; this way she could see what the prey had been.

Tossing back her braids, Lessia shrugged off the possible negatives of such a meeting, then purposefully strode towards the source of the voice, commenting in a slightly sardonic fashion, "Well, much as the idea of watching someone else eat appeals, I personally find lurking and watching to be a bit of a waste of time, particularly when I'm feeling pecking myself. Then again, I can't say I've any experiences watching YOU eat, so perhaps this could be the one-time deal breaker."

That said, she emerged from the trees and into full view of the other mare, leaving enough space between them to allow easy conversation but properly indicate to the brown mare that Lessia had no designs on her....deer? Yes, it looked like it had once been a stag, regardless of its current state. A very handsome kill, indeed.

Oh, but what was this? From the sounds of it, her unseen visitor was taking the risk and coming out to play. Theia couldn't say she disapproved, jaws grinding nosily while her eyes roamed the shadows in silent search. "Oh yeah? Maybe if you asked real nice, I'd share." The young mare teased, as though to entice. "If you ask me though, starting up a conversation's much better than wandering around by yourself in the dark--unless you think you're brave, huh?" Fangs clicked once more in a grin before the small Kalona arched her neck, sizing up the bizarre figure that strode forth from the trees.

"Well, aren't you a looker?" She mused aloud, apparently approving of the milky eyes, the thickened horns, the braided tresses that fell down the stranger's pale neck... "No need for skulking around when you look like that. Be a little more aggressive next time! Bet you you could make even the biggest stallions think twice about looking atcha cross-eyed." A glittering brown lid shuttered over a sanguine eye in a wink.

Another mouthful of meat was snatched before, flicking her tail thoughtfully, the feisty mare made to introduce herself. "I'm Theia. So, what's on your mind, stranger? You out looking for a bite to eat, or just enjoying a little midnight stroll?" The thought seemed to amuse her, and she gave herself a good shake to flip her dragging mane out of her face--and her meal.

"You can see, right?" She suddenly interjected, narrowing her eyes curiously as she peered closer at the other's face. "Never seen eyes like that before." Hell, she wouldn't mind her own eyes looking like that, now that she was really thinking about it. But, beggars couldn't be choosers; after all, if she needed a pair of soulless eyes to make her intimidating, she was definitely doing this whole Kalona thing wrong.
