fastdev may I recommend a NSX I found one for 12K. He's "Starting to drive" i don't think he should get anything even close to NSX. Driving isn't an easy thing to perfect. It'll take him a few years to even get simple driving down pat. The last thing he should be thinking of getting is something quick, unless he wants to contribute to the road toll. I think he should start to drive in something crap and slow for his first car. Learn how to control a car and gradually he'll find himself able to go though even challenging situations with ease. Then once he's confident in his driving he can buy something with a bit more of a performance aspect. But as a recommendation, i suggest maybe a Hyundai excel, or if you go for bigger cars probably a nice big caddie, at least if you crash it you'll most probably come off better that the thing you hitting.

Yer. A fast car isn't an easy thing to handle, and MR platforms are the worst of the lot. You really need to be turned on when pushing them hard; even high-caliber drivers(semi-professionals) have a hard time. A fresh driver, the back steps out and they're done.

Their cheap and easy to fix if they break down. I recommend one, and if you keep it without messing it up, it will have great potential later on down the road if you have the money to do some tuning to it.

I'm in a similar situation, I only got my license in November. While my gran gave me her '97 Rover 214, insurance for even a 1.4 was 5 times the value of the car (£700 of car, £3500 for a year of insurance) I dont know how insurance in the states work, but you dont want anything overly powerful. What you need to do is look in the classified section of your local paper, or go on a car site like Autotrader and just see what's cheap at the time. No point looking for anything specific, especially since as a new driver the chances of totaling it are high
