Ok, so I'm a noob. Starter guitar and amp; I'm sure you were all there. I was wondering first of all what equipment are electric guitarists using to really morph their sound. I think its a flanger, but I'm not sure. I'd like to get a guitar with a kill switch and a wah wah pedal, and want recomendations on cheap equipment that gets the job done, beause I have a crappy budget.

The digitech death metal distortion pedal was ok for me when I started. I'm sure there are better distortion pedals out there but thats what I used..after I got a decent amp I never looked at a distortion pedal again. I used to play that pedal through a little bass practice amp. LOL I had a crappy start on the guitar...

My amp already provides ok 'overdrive', but I was talking about giving it that alienish sound used by alot of metal groups, Buckethead, Tom Morello, etc.

Killswitch, you just need a guitar with two pickups, and turn one down to 0 and the other to 10, and use the toggle switch as a killswitch. WATCH THIS BY TOM MORELLO sad watch 3:30 to 3:40) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eg-nF8jG3Hc

Whoa... Morello suprises me everytime. But aren't pickups those magnetic bars that you strum between? Sounds like your referring to the tone knobs. And is the flanger not as crucial as I thought?

Anyway, it sounds like the most important pedals are the wah wah (for effect) and the whammy pedal (to make the notes wail). Am I right?

Well if you literally want 'thrifty' distortion, then go for Danelectro FAB Metal pedal, they're like $20, they were alright for me, but they break easily and overall suck as a pedal. I am currently using a Digitech Death Metal pedal right now, and if you can get over the fuzz it produces, it's awesome, I like the fuzz anyways, so it works for me. Although I'm also a firm believer that your amp should have everything you need, distortion or otherwise.

Thanks, I was searching for pedals in the $60 range but it helps. I guess the main thing I'm looking for is a new guitar, one with a killswitch. If anyone wants to recomend one and/or a good wah wah pedal, that what the forum was intended to be about.

A kill switch (aka 'momentary switch') cost around $3. If you're willing to drill a hole in your guitar, you could install one in under 10 minutes, easy. You just need a pal who knows how to use a soldiering gun. I don't know anything about electronics, but I've always wired my own guitars. It's extremely easy, especially if your tastes run as mine do (i.e. simple -- single volume knob per pickup -- no tone knobs, no coil splitters, nothing fancy). Adding a kill switch is about as easy as it gets. As for pedals, just pickup a cheap multi-effects box. Then you'll get to play with a wide range of popular effects (chorus, flanger, phaser, delay, reverb, etc.) I just checked Craig's List for my area and found this $60 pedal with all those effects and a wah wah built-in. Looks a bit beat up, but these things are fairly indestructable. Just make sure you check out anything with moving parts (like a volume/wah pedal); the potentiometers in those can get 'scratchy' (just make sure that moving the pedal doesn't make unpleasant scratching noises).

The killswitch is a button? sweatdrop (So thats what Buckethead is hitting) I never thought of radically modifiying the guitar itself, but I guess that could work; Although I'm not sure if my guitar is capable of having a killswitch. I have one volume knob and two tone knobs, but all the examples of guitars w/ killswitch that I have seen tend to have 4 knobs and 2 switch lever things (I only have one; besides, what is it?). Thanks for all the help so far.

Hyde_Sensei911 The killswitch is a button? sweatdrop (So thats what Buckethead is hitting) Yup. Very simple button, which turns the guitar's output off when pressed. Hyde_Sensei911 I never thought of radically modifiying the guitar itself, but I guess that could work It's a trivial modification, really. 10 minutes and $5, if you can (or know somebody who can) use a drill and a soldiering iron. Hyde_Sensei911 Although I'm not sure if my guitar is capable of having a killswitch. Yes, any guitar can have a killswitch. Doesn't matter how many pickups or volume knobs you have or anything else, the killswitch comes after that, right at your output jack (where the chord plugs in).

Also, I think my guitar is solid (it's freakin heavy). Full of wood. Is that a problem?

Hyde_Sensei911 Where do I drill the hole to install a killswitch on a strat style guitar? It's even easier (and less irreversible) on a Strat than on a Les Paul style guitar, because you don't have to touch the wood. If you remove the strings and take out the screws holding in the pickguard, you'll see that a Strat's electronics are all mounted on the pickguard itself. There are holes routed in the wood for the electronics to fit in. You can just cut a hole in the pickguard for your killswitch. Google "install killswitch strat" and start reading. smile P.S. There's no need to duplicate all your questions on my profile page. That's what discussion forums are for. smile
