Well, I've never played that version of Harvest Moon, but from my experience with Harvest Moon, you can cook all sorts of things.
Anything from strawberry jam to The Ultimate Curry to steam dumplings. Loads of things. Some people like to experiment with cooking and find recipes that way. In some games, the villagers will give you recipes after you give them a certain item or once you become friends with them. Though most recipes, if not all, can be found online.

You can buy some ingredients from a supermarket, depending on which game you're playing, but most of your ingredients will come from your own farm. All sorts of vegetables, fruits, and animal products will combine (with the right tools) to tons of different recipes.
Which is another thing -- in all of the games that I have played, you start with a teeny tiny house and you gradually upgrade it, eventually getting yourself a kitchen. Once you have a kitchen, you have to purchase certain kitchen accessories.

I hope you're excited to play!! I think that Harvest Moon is my favorite game series right next to the Final Fantasy series (for different reasons, obviously razz )
I started off with Harvest Moon: Back to Nature, which I found that I loved, so if you have a PlayStation system, I would suggest that as your first. I dunno how involved/intriguing Island of Happiness is for a newcomer.
Have fun!!

Well, you don't really make your own recipes, the game has it's own pre-set recipes, and you try to figure them out. For example: You try cooking an egg in a frying pan and you get scrambled eggs. But if you add rice to your egg when you cook it, you might get something different.

Personally though, I just find the recipes on the internet and then use them. sweatdrop

Yeah, it doesn't matter what game I play, my character always turns out to be like, extreme vegan because all I feed him/her is the cheaper wild grasses that grow around my farm/town, because I'm too cheap to break for real food, and I don't want to waste my ingredients if I screw up. xp

Food? Who needs food?
I only feed my characters when they're about to die of exhaustion and I want to keep mining. I'm pretty much a slave driver... xp

Island of Happiness is a tad hard if your probably starting out. I've played for years and I had difficultly with the water and sun points.

If you are into cooking though maybe Friends of Mineral town. Good and easy. Alot of recipes to learn and good for a first game.
