I am buying my first cello today and I would like to know if it a peice of crap or not. What are some of the things that I should keep an eye out for when I am looking at it?

I know this question is fairly old, but I suggest asking your cello instructor for a good place to shop. Luckily, my orchestra teacher owns a music shop, so I got one through her store.
I guess the most important thing is the sound quality. Don't buy one because it's cheap, because it will likely sound bad. Between $700-1000 dollars would be a good instrument.
