Chapter 2~!
“IT’S YOU!” I screamed shoving an accusing finger at his face.
“Uhm…” he looked totally unfazed by my outburst, there is no way he could have forgotten me, “Have we met before?” strike that. Apparently there is a way.
“Oh… you’re that weird girl… who ran into me earlier and tried to hold my hand.”
I stood there gawking at him, forgetting that my hand was so far out I was practically poking him in the eye.
“YOU HELD HIS HAND?! Tuyet! Why don’t you tell me these kinds of
important things?!” Mai began gawking with me.
“Ahem, correction,” Minh piped in, “She
tried to hold it! Unsuccessful!”
“Shut up!” without even looking she smacked him upside the head.
“OW!”
Finally, I snapped out of my stage of shock and took my hand back and blushed furiously realizing I was standing there looking like an idiot for the past couple of minutes.
“You know, your hands are kind of sweaty, they were all warm earlier, and I think they left a wet mark.” WHAT?! That’s totally lame! My hands are not sweaty!
“My hands are NOT sweaty! They are just fine. Moisturized perfectly-“I began when I remembered what
really happened earlier, “Hey! You lied! I definitely didn’t try to hold your hand! My hand wasn’t even anywhere NEAR your hand! It was on your shoulder!” This guy might be HELLA gorgeous but he was a liar and I HATE liars.
“Yeah, whatever. All I know is that you were kinda
creepy.” He turned towards Minh, “Is this tour over now? Or is there sill more?” he looked impatient.
“Uh, yeah there’s still more, I just wanted to introduce you three even though it seems like I didn’t need to,” he added, “Let’s go. See you after school!”
The two boys walked off and I was left with Mai, which, after careful consideration, wasn’t the
best choice on my part since she’d probably start grilling me for the details of this morning.
Thinking on my feet, I interrupted before she could say anything, “Uh! I HAVE TO GO. RETAKE A TEST. SORRY. SEE YOU AFTER SCHOOL~!” I said already halfway out of the cafeteria. After lunch I only had 2 classes left I didn’t have either of them with Mai.
~
I had successfully made it to my last two classes without running across Mai, I still have to go home with her but she wouldn’t ask any embarrassing questions around Minh.
My last class of the day was history which seemed to have been never ending, so I was thankful when the bell rang and I quickly grabbed my stuff and headed to the front of the classroom to ask the teacher about something when, I felt something ramming into my side and then down down down I, and the other something, went.
“OOOOW~! Gosh. Watch where you’re-“NO WAY. NO EFFING WAY.
“You’re like an accident magnet, aren’t you?”
AND THERE HE WAS. GRRRR. I felt like ripping a teddy bears head off right then. *GASP* STUPID PERSON MAKING ME HAVE HORRIBLE THOUGHTS~!
“I am not. And if I were you’d be like a… a… a jinx! Or something of that nature.”
“Oh wow. I’m scared now.” He picked himself up and rolled his eyes then extended his hand out to me which I graciously took- wait, EH?!
“You… you just helped me up!” I stared at my hand.
“Good, of you to notice.”
“That means, you really
can be polite!” I smacked a hand on his shoulder
“Yeah, I can be. More than you. You’re welcome by the way.” He said hitching his bag higher on his shoulder and, from what I could tell, he was getting bored with our conversation because he walked right past me and out the door leaving me feeling a little idiotic.
“Hey!” I ran after him, “Wait!” he paused, “Th- thanks.”
“tche.” And he kept on walking. Che? CHE? CHE?! After calling me impolite, I say thanks and all I get is a ‘che’?! Ugh. Whatever. Remind me not to thank him again.
OH MAN why am I late for everything?! Mai’s gunna rip my hair out because I’m late guh. *sigh* and least Minh’s probably there. He’ll get her to restrain.
…
“OH my god Tuyet, hurry up! We’ve been standing out here for like EVER!” Mai flailed her arms to get my attention. Minh was, thankfully, standing right next to her. However, from the look of disappointment painted on his face, I would say he didn’t know I would be coming on their little journey home.
“T-Tuyet is coming to? I thought it was just going to be us… well I guess I’ll just go home with the guys’ then, call me when you’re home!” before Mai could protest he had already run out the gate to walk with his friends.
“HEY! Wait up!” I heard a voice from behind me and I started to turn to see who was talking and whom he was talking to.
“Hey! It’s that new guy!” Mai whispered and before I could fully turn around a shoulder collided with mine sending all the books I was holding to scatter on the cement.
“NO FREAKING WAY! That stupid idiot! He just ran into me again!” I was about to go after him when Mai pulled me back and made me watch as he walked out casually with Minh and his group of friends.
“Calm down Tuyet. Maybe it was just an accident. Who cares?” I DO. “Anyways let’s go. I’m getting a huge craving for frozen yogurt.”
“Yeah. Fine.”
The frozen yogurt place wasn’t too far of a walk from school. Just walk a few blocks and when you’re in the city it’s pretty much unmissable with all the neon outside.
As we entered the parlor Mai and I waved to a couple of familiar faces, the frozen yogurt place was a popular hangout for kids our age. We picked a table at the window. I like watching people walking by. I stared out the window and Mai babbled on and on about the new kid and how extremely dreamy her new world history teacher is. Ew.
“Hey, are you even listening to me?” She waved a hand in front of my face.
“Oh, yeah.” she knew me too well.
“No you’re not. Now, tell me about this new kid. OUT WITH IT ALREADY.”
I hesitated, “…there really isn’t anything to tell. I was late. I accidentally ran into him, and then I ran into him again. And again. Okay well the last one wasn’t technically my fault!”
“Oh.” She sounded DISAPPOINTED. -_-
“OHMIGOD. WE ARE SUCH LOSERS. We came in and sat right down! We didn’t even go to get our yogurt!” I smacked my head and pulled her up and over to the self-serve bar.
By now I only expected that Mai wouldn’t have the disappointed look on her face anymore but, to my dismay, her face hadn’t changed.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” I stopped in front of Mai who was putting some plain tart into her cup.
“Nothing.”
“WHOA YOU STINK AT LIEING. I mean come on Mai, I’m standing right in front of you and you’re putting plain tart in your cup – WHICH YOU ABSOLUTELY HATE. You can’t seriously be trying to tell me that there isn’t anything you want to tell me.” She looked at me straight in the eye I almost had to look away.
“It’s just… well, you know. You’re my best friend. If something happens, you can tell me. You know that, right?” All I could do was stare at her. Being caught off guard by her sudden mood swing I was launched into utter silence.
“It’s funny, you know. Being friends all this time and I’ve never actually said that out loud.” She suddenly bounced around me, “That’s all I wanted to say!” she poked me, “Whoa, you look like someone hit you over the head with a brick!” I was silent getting the rest of my frozen yogurt until we sat back down and she said:
“OHMIGOD. EW. WTF IS THIS?!” she looked disgusted, “EW! IT’S PLAIN. TART. …YOU!” she stuck her finger at me, “You knew this would happen! Why didn’t you tell me I had gotten plain tart?! That’s like a waste of a perfectly good ounce~!”
I couldn’t help but laugh at her. Moments like these are when I realize why she’s my best friend.
--------
When I finally got home after walking Mai home first (she refuses to walk home by herself) I went directly to my room and flopped down on my bed.
This was my normal everyday routine when I get home; go straight to my room, lay on my bed and think, get called down for dinner – which I spent by myself – then go back to my room and do homework.
I lied on my bed staring at the ceiling thinking about the new kid and the first day of school.
A knock at the door interrupted my thoughts followed by a head being poked through my opened door,
“Dinner is ready, your parents are home tonight, you have someone to eat with,” she looked thoughtfully at me and removed her head from the doorway shutting it behind her.
I sighed.
Great, dinner with the parents. And I was actually looking forward to dinner.
I hopped off the bed and went downstairs.
I was set in my usual spot; even while my parents were gone I didn’t sit at the head of the table. I always sat in the same spot.
“Nice of you to join us,” my father, who was sitting at the end of the table locked at me with a stern face.
“No problem,” I replied looking at the bowl in front of me. Pho. I didn’t like having soup. If I looked hard I could see my reflection in the liquid.
“How was your first day of school, honey?” my mom asked eagerly awaiting for me to give her all the details.
“Eh. It was okay,” I replied simply. She looked at me funny.
“I got a call that you were late today.” My father’s voice was low. He seriously overreacts.
But, HE GOT A CALL?! I was late one day! Come on! This freaking school can’t give me one warning! Didn’t the teacher even say he’d let me off the hook?! Some other teacher must have seen in walk in late. DANGIT I hate that school!
“…and – Are you even listening to me?” my father voice rose.
“Yeah,” I answered getting frustrated.
“Don’t use that tone of voice with me young lady! You need to wake up earlier you WILL NOT be lazy in this house. You will get to school on time and you will not complain! Understood? Next time be more – “
“NO! NO, I won’t be more careful next time! I’ll be late if I want to! It wasn’t even my fault today that some idiot ran into me! Besides what right do you have to come in here and start yelling at me for being late anyways? You’re never here to make sure I get to school! If you want me on time then make sure I was up early enough!”
I stood, fed up with my father and him trying to act as though he knew what was best for me, and began walking away.
“Honey! You- you didn’t eat any – “
“I had yogurt. I’m not hungry.” I cut her off and kept walking until I was back in my room.
I lied on my bed thinking about what I had said. Thinking about my father, he was probably fuming.
One thing I didn’t fail to notice. As I was walking away he kept silent.
He didn’t stop me. He didn’t say anything.
Probably had too much pride to say something.
