"Mango pudding. I won't except anything else."
Namini recalled her brother's surprising request as she wandered about the bustling marketplace, a small basket swinging from her arm. He was so random! One night it had been simple, vanilla ice cream purchased straight from the gas station a few blocks away. Now David was asking for something like mango pudding? The motherly teen let out a soft sigh as she scanned the fresh produce aisles in search of ripe mangoes.
"Maybe while I'm here, I'll buy some bell peppers for some stir fry too," she considered aloud, stopping at one merchant to admire the heavenly scent his fruits were giving off. Hmmm...She really hadn't made the dessert in such a long time. Purchasing four of the man's biggest, reddest mangoes, Namini placed them into her basket and continued her hunt.

Unfortunately for Namini, her scavenger hunt for the necessary ingredients needed to end her brother’s craving would have to be put on hold. Not long after she bought the four juicy mangoes, a large shadow loomed over her from behind.
What happened next was as if the young teenager’s grocery shopping had turned topsie turvy to fit a horror movie. Slowly from the shadows emerged a large stoney clawed hand. It looked like it could have belonged to a monster thanks to it's size and overall look. Yet Namini would not find herself dragged off into a black abyss behind the fruit aisle. Instead, she would simply find herself one-no-two fruit less.
With the dexterity of a monster truck, the hand had reached forth and grabbed one of the juiciest looking mangoes. From there the villainous hand lifted up like a crane and deposited the stolen fruit into a basket just to her left. It repeated the process until two fruits were missing from Namini’s basket.
If Namini had dared look back to identify the thief, she’d find a young man suited for a gothic novel floating in the air with a missing torso and legs. Yet the look he wore fit a pleased-with-himself youth rather than a fruit-stealing criminal. Besides, hardened criminals rarely carried woven baskets.
If Iorek could change colors to fit his mood, he’d surely be yellow, the happy color. For today Miss Lillian had brought him out to be happy and “shop” which was what he was doing now and liking.
“You find something you like, you put it in your basket.”
Those were the young female’s exact words before she handed him this trusty gadget-holder-thing. The basket was it? Lillian had repeated the name and pointed to what he had around his arm several times before she miraculously got it around his large arm. Well…what it was he was glad to have it! He was able to put all sorts of things he liked into it without having to worry about them becoming ugly and squishy. Whatever these pretty things were he had just taken from the other basket that the female had were perfectly safe in his basket. He had nothing to worry about!
Of course the young raevan had no idea he had stolen the fruits from Namini. Nor did he realize he had wandered away from Lillian, the only one besides Tyson that understood what he said, wanted, and needed.

"Now for some bell pep.. peppers a-and oni..ons?" Namini's grocery list recital was cut short as she watched, in a mixture of utter confusion and shock as a monstrous hand reached into her basket. Though one would think her first reaction would be to scream in terror like a cinematic maiden cornered by some shadowy beast or villain, the curly-haired brunette just stood and watched curiously as the creature carefully but unhesitatingly slipped two of her mangoes out of her basket and into his own. That's when she noticed it. Still paralyzed but overwhelmed with interest, Namini's eyes stared intently on the bobbing ribbon found beneath the man's descending torso and finally, the teen let out a loud gasp.
"W-wait!" she squeaked as the blood began to flow back through her veins. Running after the stony figure, Namini called again, though this time more assertively, "WAIT! Mr. Raevan, please!"
She felt so silly, chasing after the Frei not because her mangoes had been stolen but because she had desired a good look at his face. Namini hadn't met many so the few that she did encounter were precious! Catching her breath a few spaces away from him, seeing as he had stopped to inspect some more fruity treasures, Namini smiled a bit and gently asked, "Can I have my mangoes back please, Mr. Raevan?"

Namini’s pleas for Iorek to halt seemed to have fallen on deaf ears as the rock-based raevan went about on his merry way. Luckily a box of tasty yellow fruit, none other than the trusty banana, caught his eye on his way down the aisle. At last the raevan came to stop just so he could pick up and feel the oddly shaped treat.
It looked so weird…Iorek rolled the fruit in between his massive fingers; not seeming to notice that it’s insides had begun to seep out of the sides. Well Lillian would surely know what it was. So with that thought in mind, Iorek set the mysterious mushy fruit inside his basket alongside what he had unknowingly stolen from Namini.
As of now Iorek had gone without registering that the young teen had been trying to attract his attention. Namini’s sweet voice had only gone in one pointed ear and out the other. It seemed as though he would never notice her. But that was until he turned himself around. With as much grace as a brick no less. Clearly he had not gotten used to swift movement for in the process of moving his body around, Iorek’s large wings almost pushed a tower of watermelons over their box’s edge.
A bright brilliant green eye stared back at Namini once Iorek had situated himself. Who was this? She was staring at him as though he knew him. Had they met before? Iorek couldn’t remember if he had so he decided to do what Lillian instructed of him if he was to ever meet a lady.
Slowly with his basket cradled in the crook of his elbow, Iorek drifted forth until he was hovering just before Namini. A smile drifted over his lips, vanquishing the once vacant look. One of his clawed grey hands stretched forward to grasp Namini’s. The teenager’s hand look like it belonged to a delicate porcelain doll in Iorek’s monstrous palm. Being very gentle, Iorek leaned forward, puckered his lips, and pressed a kiss on the roof of Namini’s hand.
The soft kiss only lasted for a couple of seconds before Iorek pulled himself away from her. The expression he wore was full of pride. He had done it right, exactly the way Lillian had taught him. There were no bruises, no crushed bones, nor no cries of anguish that had come from the young girl. She was fine. But now Iorek was left hovering without any clue what to do next but wonder where Lillian was. He needed to have her if he was to communicate with the human before him. The only words Iorek could pronounce correctly were, “Hi.”, “Bye”, “Yes”, “No”, and his young guardian’s name along with his own nickname. That wasn’t much to keep a conversation alive. Yet with all his pondering of what he should do next, the reason why this young woman had gotten his attention still had not crossed his mind.

Playful papaya and gossipy grapes seemed to burn their inquisitiveness into the back of Namini's head, watching curiously as Iorek hovered over to the girl and raised her porcelain skin to his lips. Now, if he had been a human colleague, Namini would have felt justified in blushing or stuttering in response to the boy's assertiveness but the fact that the ribboning torso was nothing more than a child in her eyes, the kiss was innocent and welcomed. Within the few seconds of contact, Namini made note of Iorek's stony skin and the kindheartednesses behind it.. and smiled. He wasn't like Rivener who had been so rude nor like Eiry who was amazingly playful and curious; Iorek seemed straightforward and genuine, and these made Namini quickly appreciate the Frei's presence. Oh, but still, there was a matter that needed to be addressed.
Though it was Iorek who had first removed himself of her hand, Namini still withdrew it to her chest and cleared her throat.
"Thank you for your courtesy but um..Mr. Raevan, those -she pointed cautiously at the mangoes sitting beside pitifully squished bananas- happen to be mine. You took them from me, I believe, so..um..Can I have them back? I really need them for dinner tonight," she ranted, wondering if this was really too much information. All she really needed to say was: Give me back my mangoes. But alas, politeness was something she could not give up on.
That's when she realized something. Politeness. Courtesy to the new owner. But, looking around, Namini's cerulean eyes saw no one rushing up to the pair, no one calling out the Frei's name. Was this one of those abandonment cases? Well, she thought it was possible to leave a Raevan since it was possible to leave a regular child in a marketplace and hope they find a new home, so of course..No! Namini's sweet expression melted away and hardened into a growing mixture of fear and pity. Who could do such a thing? Especially to one so sweet!! But, no, maybe that wasn't the case. Unfortunately, her words slipped forward past her logic as she raised her hands back around one of his larger ones, "I'm so selfish! Do you need help finding your owner? Are they nearby? Is it a boy or girl? Tall, short?"
Her concern for the poor Frei was overwhelming and yet, somehow still growing with each passing second.

Iorek’s eyes followed the young girl’s extended finger only to cast the bright green orbs down onto his basket. Yes, that was his. He knew that. So what did she want from him? The more he thought about what she was trying to say, the wider his frown grew. His arched brows furrowed as he tried to concentrate. But at his age, and just being about a week old, Iorek simply could not understand her. Perhaps she wanted his basket? Or maybe it was a piece of his collection she was after? If so she’d have to find him something else to trade for it because he had found these things specifically for Lillian.
Yet before Iorek could do much more with the problem concerning his basket and fruit, the female opened her mouth and started to say a whole new bunch of words. The whirlwind of speech dazed the youth and left him lost in the vast, confusing ocean that was the human language. From “selfish” and on Iorek could not follow what Namini was trying to say. All he could do was stare at her and hope she would take what she wanted and leave.
If he knew what to say in reply the situation could of been much different. Instead of staring blankly at the girl, Reks could of just handed her what she wanted and be on his way. Heck, if he understood more, he wouldn’t even be in this situation. Too bad he couldn’t remember exactly where he had left Lillian. Hopefully she’d find him soon and rescue him from this big mess.
The guardian in question, Lillian, was in a no better situation than her ward. While he was lost in the sea of words, she had found herself lost in the longest check out line EVER. For some reason, the man who was paying the cashier just couldn’t understand that he was not able to buy a piece of fish at the vegetable section. At least Lillian could see the top of Iorek’s head from where she was standing. Thank goodness he was being good about remaining close to the area like she had told him to do.
Unlike Tyson, Iorek always followed the rules Lillian set for him. Sure she hated to send him off for a bit, but the people in line had begun to grow very uneasy with him. He may have just been floating along leisurely at her side but for some reason the shoppers had come to believe that he was plotting something against them. In order not to get thrown out of the market, Lillian had to dismiss her charge into the fruits section which was close enough where she could still watch him. Too bad Namini didn’t know that and Iorek couldn’t remember.

Namini watched concernedly as Iorek's features twisted in confusion, the silence between them growing heavier and longer with each uncertain blink. Maybe she had talked too fast? Or perhaps he was trying to remember his guardian's location? Whatever the reason was, it was obvious that the Frei had not understood. Perhaps it was even a language barrier she was facing.. Now it was Namini's turn to furrow her brow, uncertain about what kind of communication method would be best. She couldn't just reach in and take them from him, though with such a straightforward procedure there was perhaps a small chance for misinterpretation; But then again, Iorek might become enraged like Rivener and, in a worst case scenario, swing at her with one of his massive arms. Though Namini doubted this, since the creature seemed to quiet and gentle, but it was best not to take any chances. Plus, if she had reached into his basket it would be her luck that his guardian would be approaching and then this mess would become even greater! Then she'd look like the thief!! So how, how was she to communicate? Simpler words? Hand gestures? A combination of both? Yes, that seemed best. Preparing herself for the performance, Namini noted that some Raevans really were like young children , slower than others in interaction and speech.
Pointing to the mangoes yet again, she recited slowly and clearly, "Not yours, mine." The finger turned and landed on Namini's collarbone, "My mangoes."
She crossed her fingers and hoped the message was easy enough for the foreign Frei to convey! Looking around curiously once again, Namini hoped the guardian would hurry up. She felt a little silly, harassing the poor boy like this.

At last something clicked in the young raevan’s head when Namini made her second attempt at retrieving the mangoes. This time, Iorek followed her hand to the bright colored circles he picked up a couple of minutes ago.
Oh! She wanted those things!
He seemed to understand what she wanted now. The large stoney hand slowly reached into his basket to pull out the stolen fruits. Without any kind of fuss, Iorek handed over the juicy fruit.
Before Iorek could do anything else, like hand over the other fruit in his basket to the girl, a voice broke their awkward silence. “Hey Iorek, sorry it took so long. Good job waiting here.”
Lillian had just given up on buying the vegetables. She’d grab some at the local grocery store on the way home. The fruit there might not be as fresh, but she wasn’t going to give Tyson some kind of holiday from the greens just because she couldn’t wait any longer in the check out line.
Iorek quickly looked behind him, his smile only growing when Lillian came up beside him. “Lil!” He cried with delight.
“Nice to see you missed me now, um…” Lillian peeked over Iorek’s long arm to see exactly who was standing on the other side of him. Had Iorek been causing trouble of some sort in her absence?
Moving out to stand next to the raevan at his side, Lillian quickly looked at whom exactly it was her charge had been talking to. Immediately she recognized the girl from the summer beach bash held only a month ago. “Oh! It’s you. Hello.” Lil cast a glance in Iorek’s direction, the raevan still looking down at her with great happiness in his visible eye. “I’m sorry if he caused any trouble. He’s still learning, and I got caught up in the longest check out line known to the history of man." Lil released an exhausted sigh and reached up to rub at her temples. That wasn't a good excuse to leave the youth out wandering alone, but it was the best way to not get kicked out. Composing herself to a better standard Lil lowered her hand and smiled at the young teenager. "You’re Namini right? We’ve met before on a few occasions.”

Graciously taking the shining fruits back, thankful that none were harmed whilst in the Frei's care, Namini grinned sweetly to further express her appreciation and care towards the innocent Raevan. He had meant no harm, and no harm had been done, so all seemed good. But with her appreciativeness came disappointment. It would have been so terribly nice to encounter his owner, but time was short and perhaps today was just the day for meetings. Emitting a softened sigh, Namini had just turned her head full of curls when a small conversation sparked behind her.
"Lil!"
Lil? As in short for...Lily? Lillian? Lillian! Curiosity overtook her senses yet again as cerulean eyes locked onto the familiar face of the Frei's approaching guardian. It was the girl from the Lab's summer events. Though hesitant about the name, Namini was sure this was the girl from the previous chimera zoo and hair-raising situation involving their mutual friend, Isi. Instinctively, quietly unsure of how Namini herself judged the girl, the brunette smiled politely and nodded her head in reply. Perhaps, she could spare a few more minutes. She needed to make as many friends within the Lab community as possible before her own charge was delivered.
"And you're Ms. -she paused and continued, dropping the formality- and you're Lillian right? Yes, I remember you from last year's chimera petting and this summer's beach event," she sang gently, wondering if the girl was trying to be polite or genuinely kind. Either way, there was no point in being defensive or vague. Namini glanced over the gleeful Frei.
"And trouble? No no no! I feel like I should apologize to him. It was a simple misunderstanding and yet I chased him down for something as silly as mangoes. Goodness."

"Mangoes?" Lillian repeated as her eyes turned upwards to glance at Iorek. The raevan wore a pleased smile on his stone lips as he floated calmly beside his guardian. He seemed to be as happy as a bear who had found a pot of honey. "He took your...mangoes?" Lillian arched a brow after she had thought of her raevan's petty little crime. Of course he wouldn't have listened to her. He probably only heard bits and pieces of her warning. "Do not take fruit that is in other people's baskets." had turned into, "Take fruit that is in other people's baskets." Lillian heaved a great sigh and brought her right hand up to run her fingers through her hair.
Why was this so hard? When she told Tyson not to do things, even as a little kid, he wouldn't do them. But this guy...over and over and over times a hundred she had told him what "Do Not" means and he understood it for a little while only to fool her and forget the next. It was becoming a very frustrating battle. But it was her fault. She had left him to his own means when she decided to try and purchase some vegetables. He just wasn't ready to be on his own yet.
"Sorry about that. He's still learning." Lillian added as she restricted Iorek from floating over to the watermelon shelf with a hand over one of his.
Iorek didn't seem to care that he was kept on a short leash by Lillian. After his smile had faded he just wore an indifferent look upon his face as Lil apologized once more for him. Yet before Lillian could try and change the topic into something much more enjoyable he decided to do it for her without even realizing it. Although it may have been better to describe this topic as awkward rather than joyful.
"Cute." The raevan suddenly said after he had raised a hand and pointed it at Namini. "Girl, yes?" But instead of waiting for Lillian to say anything he floated away from the young lady and up to Namini. The partial body he possessed bent over to the point where their noses almost touched. Someone still did not possess the knowledge of personal space. "You." He addressed her. "..Girl?" That was the right term right? She looked similar to Lillian. But...maybe he was wrong. So, just in case, he added with a smile, "Ah!...You boy?"

"No, no, please. I completely understand. He's just like a newborn puppy right? Curious about the world and just a bit hard to control right? It's kind of sweet, his affectionate nature towards you. I wonder..is he hard to feed?" Namini said curiously, smiling the entire time. But before Lillian could respond, Namini watched, eyes widening just a bit out of fear, as Iorek's shadow consumed her. The young girl opened her mouth to ask what she could do for him, but Iorek threw his statement out faster.
"Cute."
"Excuse me?" was the immediate reply that escaped the brunette's mouth. Namini cupped her mouth with her hands and blushed furiously. She was about to apologize for her abruptness but Iorek broke the silence and continued with his observational commentary, floating closer until their faces were one push's distance from kissing. Blink. Blink blink. Sapphire eyes stared deep into soul-piercing emeralds as Namini tried her best to hold her ground. Wasn't these one of those situations in which you should stand your ground and show no fear? Oh goodness! He wasn't a dog! Maybe this approach would seem rude or aggressive or--
"Girl, yes? You. ...Girl? Ah!...You boy?"
Namini could only continue to stare until his words had finally soaked into her brain, which all took about ten seconds, before any sign of a response was able to be made.
"Ye..yes, I'm a girl. I..Umm..You're..cute..too?"
The words just seemed so foreign to the awkward teen, a better response was impossible.
