((This is a new story I'm writing, but got stuck on. I hope it's okay that I put it up. If not, I'm sorry. Comment are very welcome (Good or bad). But if they are bad, please try not to be horribly mean. I'm new at the story writing thing. Thanks XD. Oh, and I have as of yet to choose a name for the story, so suggestions on that would be great too.))
Here goes....
Varid looked up as a sound reached him: someone stumbled through the forest. Sniffing the air, he got a whiff of wood smoke, wheat, and blood: Human. Female. Hurt. The stench of blood was trying to block out all other smells.
Curious, he walked quietly to the deer trail the humans used. He watched as a young woman crashed through the trees to the west. She was covered in blood; running headlong down the path. A moment later, a large male flung himself at the woman, taking them both to the ground.
The woman screamed, yelling desperately at the man. He grinned at her, his evil intent shinning in his eyes. With one hand, he pinned her arms over her head. With the other he slapped her and yelled back. The woman’s screams stopped, but she still whimpered and pleaded with the male. He slapped her again, and a small line of blood ran from her mouth.
Still holding her arms above her head, the man ripped at her dress. Though slightly worn, the material was strong and did not yield. This made the man more angry, and he slapped the woman a third time. The woman had become silent; but the gleam in her eye said she would no more surrender to this man than she would jump off a cliff.
The looked of utter defiance in her eyes impressed Varid; as he looked on from the underbrush. He decided that he would help the woman. A vicious growl built low in his chest. Standing up to make himself known, he loosed that growl on the two humans.
The male stiffened and looked his way. Varid knew his eyes said murder, but he growled again, so the male would get the full idea. The man looked down at the woman under him, making a decision. Cursing loudly, he jumped to his feet and took off the way he had come. Varid grinned, anticipating the chase, and dashed after the clumsy human.
Chasing him for only a league, Varid came suddenly to the end of his domain. What he saw there, shocked even him. The human village, so close to his beloved home, was in flames. Bodies were sprawled from the edge of the forest to the other end of the village. Men like the one he had been chasing patrolled the village, searching for any survivors. Finding none, they moved to the clearing before the forest, and made camp.
Varid resisted the urge to charge forward and rip everyone of their throats out. He hadn’t survived this long to die being stupid. Turning around, he made his way back to the woman. When he arrived at the spot where she had been, he found her gone. Her trail was easy enough to find. She was headed farther into the forest. Varid would have left her to her own way, but some inner call was pushing him to follow her.
Sighing, he began the tedious task of tract down the female. It took him only five minutes to find her. She had fallen to the ground barely two leagues from where the man had caught her. Her breathing was shallow and, to Varid’s advanced hearing, her heart was beating erratically. She had lost consciousness, and was fading fast. Varid, warily of humans but heeding to the call, did the only thing he could do. He transformed from his beautiful wolf form to that of a human, and pick the female up. Turning to the left, he took off running for his home. This took him many minutes, for he lived deep in the forest. Stopping just before the clearing in front of his cave, he set the woman down.
He stepped purposefully into the clearing, and walked into the cave. The eyes of his brethren shined out at him, as they all asked the same question: Brother, why do you wear the skin of a human? Has something occurred? Varid did not speak as he walked to the back of the cave. Kneeling down before a great white wolf, he finally spoke.
Cahr. I have someone who is in great need of your healing. I cannot bring them into the clearing, so you most come out with me. It is of great urgency. Please, do not question me. I will explain all in time.
The wolf nodded, and transformed to human as he stood. “I will come see this injured being. Though, why you say not to question you worries me. But I will trust you.” His voice was gruff and wise; ancient beyond imaging. Varid turned and led him to where he had set the woman. When they arrived, she was barely breathing.
Cahr growled, seeing that the ‘injured being’ was a human. “Why have you brought her here? You will bring all of her village down upon us!” He had bent down to take a closer look at her. Then he gasped. “She is nearly dead! Please, tell me you are not the cause of this?” He glanced up a Varid, then went back to examining the female.
“No, I’m not the cause of her injuries. The village on the edge of the forest was attacked. She escaped and ran into the forest, followed closely by a male attacker. I chased him to the forests end. That is how I know of the village. Something is demanding that this woman be saved. I feel it in my wolf heart. Can you do it?” Varid looked anxiously from the almost dead woman to his old friend.
Cahr continued to examine the woman, not speaking until he was done. He looked up at Varid from where he knelt beside the woman. “I will not ask for the full story until she is taken care of. Her wounds are severe and she’s lost a lot of blood. But if we act fast, she may be saved. This is what I’m going to need…” He gave a long list of herbs and other ingredients and sent Varid on his way. Varid gathered what was needed and then returned to the healer. Cahr silently took the materials and began to work; with Varid hovering over his shoulder, and others of the pack gathering outside.

Several hours later, a sweating Cahr stood up shakily and turned to the waiting crowd. Varid had explained what he could to all of them, so there was a low murmur of conversation as he turned to address them.
“After many hours of work, I have determined that the human woman will survive. Varid. Come forward, I must speak to you.” Varid stepped from the crowd and walked over to where Cahr was standing.
“I trust you are not lying to me when you said that your wolf heart had demanded that she live. But I know not why this burden has befallen you. For it is a burden I would not want even for myself. But you are a strong wolf, and can do it. Since you’re the one who has recued her, she is now your responsibility. As you already know, she may not enter this clearing; no not-wolf can And, if what you said of the village is true, she has no home to go to. Therefore, I charge you with the quest of seeing her well and in a new home. This I decree before the entire pack. May I have your word that you will do this thing?” Cahr’s voice had taken on a feeling of prophecy.
Varid knelt before Cahr. Looking him in the eye and, speaking wolf speech so he could not lie, he swore, “I give you my word as a man and as a wolf, that I, Varid Whitetail, will take on this quest. No matter the danger or the risks, I will do all in my power to see this women to safety.” The pack howled in recognition of his pact, rising to an ear splitting volume before quieting again.
Cahr motioned for Varid to get up, and again spoke. “By all those that stand witness tonight, and by the Gods of old, I here by bind you to your word. Honor it well, brother.” Becoming yet again the great white wolf, Cahr lead the rest of Varid’s pack back into the cave.
Varid watched the dark cave entrance for several minutes before turning his attention to his new charge. What was he going to do with her? Like Cahr had said, she could not enter into the clearing, she was not wolf. So, first things first: Find somewhere to rest for a few days until she was stronger. Sitting down, Varid began to list all the resting places he knew of.
