It was slightly embarrassing. Not that Christian would ever admit it to anyone else, but he was still having a bit of trouble learning how to read music. Sure he could sing whatever he heard just fine, but reading it and singing it right without hearing it? It was hard!
That's why, instead of hanging out and reading cooking books as his father finished cleaning the school, he had taken to hanging out in the music room by the piano with a 'How To' book in front of him.
He was perched on the bench in front of the piano, the room only half lit, and staring intently at the page as he very methodically reached down and touched one of the keys. When he heard the music he repeated the note outloud, only to curse as his second voice pitched one note too high.
Singing was hard work.

Devakanya was not really a fan of school. There was a lot of talking involved. She was not really a fan of music class, either; she couldn't sing! It was true, the unicorn was horrible fond of music; she was even learning to play a harp with Zack before he... Well, she really liked music. And she liked to listen to other people sing, as long as they didn't try to get her to sing along.
But what was that, exactly?
The unicorn's ears flicked and flattened. Someone was having a little trouble. Devakanya continued down the hall, sandals making a soft pit-pat as her sun dress swayed around her legs. The girl hugged her books closer to her chest and flicked an ear, tail swishing nervously as she slowly peered around a corner. Who was trying to sing, anyways? Maybe, if she was really lucky, it'd be one of her friends.

He scowled, then hit the note again, forcing his higher voice to sing it. Unfortunately it made his deeper voice sing the not below it. "Oh for cryin' out loud," he complained to his two voices. "Either sing the same note or don't sing at all."
Which was childish, since he was the one in control of the voices. Not that he wanted to admit it at the moment. How was he going to be the lead singer of a band if he couldn't get his voices to do what he told them to? He sighed, his head falling as he tried to think.
He had no idea that someone was coming towards him.

Devakanya frowned and snuck a little closer, trying to get a better look without making too much noise. He was trying to sing. Hopefully he wouldn't notice- he was awfully scaring looking- and she could get away with this unscathed. The unicorn took another step and walked into a music stand.
Startled, the girl jumped, dropping her books all over the floor. If she could make noise, she would have squeaked as she dropped to the floor and scrambled to pick up her school stuff. Surely, he'd see her now. And he'd want to know what she was doing here; what had she done!? She just needed to clean up fast and-
...he wouldn't hurt her, right?

He turned, looking at her blankly for a long moment. Oh, he thought, one of Antony's princesses. "Need help?" he asked, mildly. It wasn't her fault that his voices weren't cooperating with him, and he was, by nature, a helpful guy when it came to picking things up.
Then he realized she must have heard him talking to himself. Crap.

Devakanya looked like she was about to cry. What an awful, horrible person she was! Spying, on other people. How dare she! Even if he was doing something odd, he probably wanted it private. And secret. And she had spied, and ruined, and oh, whatever was she going to do! She couldn't even apologize!
Before she realized it, tears started slipping down her face. The unicorn gasped and began to furiously wipe at her eyes, forgetting about her scattered books for a moment. Oh, no. No no no!

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" he said, hopping off of the bench and running over on all fours. He scooped up all the books, sitting down to offer them to her. "Here, it's not that big a deal, you know?" Now that was awkward. Who knew girls cried over dropping stuff like books?
Then again, his mom had once cried over dropping dinner. He guessed that counted. But books didn't taste funny after being dropped--well, they might. He'd never eaten a book. He blinked, realizing he had been thinking out loud, and flushed slightly. "I mean--were you planning on eating those?"
Which sounded a lot stupider than he thought it would.

Devakanya took a deep breath and tried to compose herself. How embarrassing. Now she was making him feel bad and he hadn't even done anything! She sniffed once, twice, and tried to take the books, forcing herself to shake as little as possible. She bobbed her head and looked away, blushing.
Wait. What?
The quivering lip turned into a confused frown as the unicorn whipped around to give the boy a strange look. She tipped her head to the side and shook her head. Of course she wasn't going to eat her books! That would taste horrible! She gave a gentle snort and shook her head again, just to make sure he got the point, and then pointed to necklace and charm.
'Devakanya.'
That was her. And he was?

"Devakenya," he read. "I'm Chris," he told her, grinning now that she was no longer bawling. "I'm going to be a singer. As soon as my two voices decide to get along, that is." His tail twitched. "Doesn't help that I don't know how to play the piano," he admitted, looking back at it.
"You know anybody who can?" he asked as he glanced back at her. "I can't tell Rory that I don't know what I'm doing, since I'm the one that came up with the band idea in the first place."

Devakanya nodded and did a mini-curtsy. It was a pleasure. Kind of. Well, yes, she was scared before, and still a little nervous now, but Chris did not seem the least bit angry she had been watching him. And he had helped pick up her books, which was nice. Maybe he was like Alex. Very frightening presence, but after you got underneath his gruff exterior, he wasn't so bad.
Oh, piano? Harper had taught her a little bit a long time ago. Maybe she could help?
The girl pointed to herself, and then to the to piano, and then back to Chris and tipped her head. She could certainly try. She knew how to read music, having lived with Zack once upon a time. It might even be nice to get back into it.

"You can do it?" he asked, getting excited. "Can you read music? Cuz I got a book of songs that I can sing, and people say it sounds alright--" He raced over to his bag, digging out the book of rock music made for piano and offering it to her. "You ever heard of Jimi Hendrix?"

Devakanya nodded. She could definitely read the music. Now, playing it might be something else entirely, but hopefully Chris would understand. She set her books down in a neat pile and slowly took the sheet of music, frowning thoughtfully as she shook her head. No, no, she had never heard of Jini Hendrix. Or, maybe she had. She never listened to Zack when he was busy fanboying over his music.
The unicorn held the paper up and motioned to the piano. Did he want her to play this?

"Yeah," Chris said with an encouraging nod. "Try playing it, would you? I know the words already." He sat down on the ground next to the piano, waiting expectantly. She looked like the type that could play a piano, pretty and classy. Unlike him.
But then again, it'd suck to be a pretty boy like Antony.

Devakanya nodded slowly and swallowed. Well, she had gotten herself into this. She had better be able to pull it off. She padded over to the piano quietly and seated herself, tucking her skirt beneath her legs as she set the sheet of music on the stand. She looked over to Chris and held out one finger, wait please, and stared back down at the ivory keys. She hadn't played an instrument in a really long time...
...better start with something she knew by heart.
Very softly, the small unicorn began to play 'Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star'. Upon realizing she had very little trouble (and the piano appeared to be perfectly safe), she allowed a small smile. Well, she might as well try Chris' song again. Giving it one last look, she swallowed her fear and started to play the boy's song.

He listened to her play for a moment, cocking his head and smiling slightly as he recognized the song. Then he opened his mouth, singing the song he knew by heart in that slightly raspy duel voice of his, one voice singing the melody, the other singing the harmony.
He sounded like a little boy, still, his voice having not reached puberty, but it was still a strong, solid sound that had his priest bugging him on a regular basis to join the boy's choir.
The boy's choir scared him. They all looked alike with their same haircuts and eerie staring eyes. He'd seen part of a horror movie full of kids that looked exactly like them.
