About Shinra

______________________

Ariston yawned and stretched out his front and hind legs. Twilight again, his favorite time of day. The meadow was quiet tonight, probably because the peepers hadn't warmed up for their nightly symphony. Lying on his back, Ariston smiled to himself and watched the sun make it's final journey across the sky and set.

His thoughts turned to the vixen he was casually seeing, Teles. If he had anything to do with it however, the casual would soon disappear. Teles was so different from any fox that he'd ever been interested in. His work and travel had forced him to give up more than a few vixens over the course of his years, but with Teles he knew that there was no way he could give her up. Not for a second. If only he could swallow his courage and actually tell her that.

He frowned for a moment, his pleasant evening slightly marred with thoughts of the fact that he didn't have a clue as how to tell Teles he was infatuated with her. He sighed and turned his eyes skyward again, waiting for the moon to rise. Maybe that was something he should deal with sooner, rather than later.

Shinra was taking the long way to the lake, going across through the woods and fields. Besides, there were clearer places to lay over there than if she just went straight though the woodlands. Her fur glimmered in the starlight, thame beauty of the sky reflected on her pelt. She at the fringe of the trees now, and was gazing across a meadow. One thing held her gaze though. She smiled slyly as she half closed her eyes.

"Well, well, well, if it isnt the one fox I thought i'd never find again. Long time no see," She called from the other side of the meadow, and she took a step forward to be more easily seen. She remebered every fox she had ever gone after, and Ariston just happened to be one of the earliest.

Ariston still lay on his back with his eyes closed. He frowned for a moment. Was he asleep? He hadn't known that he'd drifted off but that was the only explanation he had. Because he could hear a voice from his past calling to him. And that wasn't possible. Because the vixen behind that voice was about as far away from him as humanly possible.

His eyes flew open.

Or not.

Shinra was staring at him from across his meadow. All of his happy thoughts fled as he watched the vixen approach him.

"Hellfire and Damnination, Shinra," he remarked irritably. Shinra was the last vixen he wanted to see, ever. "Not long enough. I'd say hello, but that would invite you for further unwelcome conversation, and I don't particularly fancy taking a trip down memory lane tonight."

He sneered, an unusual expression on his normally calm face. But then again, he didn't deal with Shinra daily anymore and he was decidedly happier for it.

"Arnt we in a sour mood tonight," She said, raising an eyesbrow teasingly. Then, she smiled. She walked up and sat down beside Ariston and rolloed her eyes. "Come now, was our time together really that bad," She said, eyeing him.

Shinra was abnormally unstable in both spirit and mind. Malicious, cold and cruel, bundled with mischeif and lust. Few could really put up with her, and none ever took the time to understand her.

Ariston snorted. No, it had been infinitely worse. Ariston had understood her, too well. She'd refused to give up her games, refused to admit that there could have been something real between them. Refused to believe that someone might have gotten past her walls. Might have actually seen her for what she was and not cared.

Shinra had been beautiful to him once. But her cruelty and her refusal of him had soon soured her looks and what she was to him. Besides the fact that Ariston was a one vixen fox.

Shinra tended to chase after any male that caught her fancy. And Ariston could never stand that. He wanted her to be his and only his, just as he would have been only hers. But it just hadn't worked. And now she was in his meadow, annoying him when all he wanted to do was watch the stars for the evening.

He scooted sideways, not to give her room, but to put distance between them. Shinra would probably try and touch him, seduce him. That was the last thing he wanted. Better for Ariston to avoid her and get her to leave. What was she doing here anyways?

"Just go away Shinra," he said, his voice dead sounding. Dealing with Shinra was exasperating. "We're over, done. Go find your next conquest and leave this one in the past."

Her eyes hardened, and her hatred set in. She snarled slightly. One time, he had been speicial to her. Beyond the others. But he had never been observant enough to tell. She would actually talk to him, like she was an almost normal fox. She had never been able to control the way she was, and she knew that she couldnt change. not the way he wanted her too, even if she tried. And after he had left her, she subconsiously changed herself. Only a little bit, but some none the less.

She had realized deep down how important he was to her. Sure, his leaving her scarred her, adding new heights to her anger, but it had taught her that if she ever found another, or maybe him again, that she must try to focus on them, and not the others.

most foxes, she would just blow their comments away, or get mad at them, but his words seemed to reach deeper into her. most foxes, she would ignore their requests, and any fox that had been with he long would know that. But, for the first time in her life, she was guenuinley hurt.

"Fine," She spat, the pain evident in her voice evident, even though she tried to hide it. "I should have never trusted you," she murmmered, to quietly to hear correctly, but one could tell she said something. She rose, for once in her life near tears. She knew that she could never phsically hurt one that had been so dear to her. But she had never told him how important he was for the fact she had still been battling with herself, seeking the truth of whether it was true.

She turrned, towards the other side of the meadow, where it stretched up onto a hill. She bounded away from him, her tail strreaming behind her. When she arrived at the hill, she stopped, gazing up at the sky. It was now that so many new emotions, new feelings were introduced to her, and she couldnt handle them all. Her fur shimmered in the moonlight, and for once, she looked back. It hurt her more since he had rejected her twice, but the second time, he didnt even give her a chance. She gazed back upon the one she had once truly loved, but she dint figure it out in time.

Ariston watched her get up and leave. Half of him was relieved. And the other half of him felt like an a**.

"s**t," he muttered and banged his head against the ground. He was flirting with danger here. He could jeopardize everything he had with Teles. That was something he couldn't risk. But...

There had been times when he was truly happy with Shinra. Times when she looked at him and he felt like he had the world. The whole truth was that he hadn't just left her because of her behavior, there had been another reason that he'd never explained.

He'd left around the time his dreams had started again. And dragging Shinra along for the ride hadn't exactly been his plan. He'd hoped that when the dreams had stopped that they'd stopped for good, that Shinra was the cause. He came to realize that she wasn't, and there was nothing he could do about that. Shinra wasn't the one whom need him so badly; in truth there were times when he wondered if she needed him at all.

Shinra, for all the crap she gave him, didn't deserve to be treated like Ariston was treating her now; no one deserved it really.

Ariston hauled himself off the ground and climbed up the hill after her.

"Damn it Shinra, get back here," he said, anger and resignation in his voice. "We'll talk. But only talk, understand? I'm not interested in anything else anymore."

Shinra was about to turn away when he spoke. She stood for a moment, deciding what to do. It was so unlike her to be feeling so many different things. She just wanted to run away from Ariston now, get away and forget how much he had once meant to her. She tensed, about to follow through with her instinct, but something sropped her. It was to overwhelming for her. Too much...and right now she needed help. She gritted her teeth, and sat, glaring at Ariston as he climbed the hill, though it was not a glare of hatred, it was one of doubt.

Ariston climbed up until he was eye to eye with Shinra, sat down. And stared at her like a fool.

He hadn't actually planned this far ahead. Seeing Shinra had been like a blow to the gut. He had never, in a million years, thought he'd be confronted with the vixen he'd loved and lost.

To say it was awkward would have been an understatement. He looked down and shoved a pebble around with one of his paws, wondering what to say.

"Uh..." he started brilliantly. "How have you been?"

Oh yeah, Ariston thought as he mentally rolled his eyes at himself. Smooth, real smooth.

"Same as I always have, only theres still a chunk of my soul ripped out that tagged along with you when you left," She said. These were venomous words, but they were spoken quietly and indifferently.

What was he playing at? Talking to him hurt her, since he no longer wanted her. But she couldnt run away from the one who had once brought her true happiness. He would always have a place with her, though it will never be the same as it once had.

Ariston sighed.

"Already going to start on that Shinra?" he asked tiredly. "We haven't seen each other in years and you're already gunning for a fight?"

"Shall I, once again, remind you of why I left? Remind you why I couldn't stay with you, even though I would have died to be by your side, if you'd only given me the right reason to? Or shall we act like the civilized adults I know we can both be? Is it really so hard for you to be polite for once in your life?"

That last bit was a little harsh. But, even after all these years, he was still very angry with Shinra for her behavior during their relationship. Still very hurt over a fox he'd wanted to spend his life with.

You have to stop thinking like that, he told himself. You found her, you found your Siren. You should be reminding yourself of Teles.

And so he did. He remembered every little detail of Teles, the color of her eyes, her markings, the funny way she looked at him when she was madder than hornet, the way she soaked up any information he could give her on a particular area of history.

Smiled to himself. And calmed down.

Shinra snarled and whirled around, a paw raised to strike Ariston, but she couldnt bring herself to do it. Then she saw him smiling and horror crossed her eyes. Was he enjoying her pain? Her suffering? Her confusion? She bared her teeth, and swung back around, her back to him as she slumped, staring at the ground, frustration welling in her. Even now, she still did not know if Ariston had truly been right for her. Even now, she didnt want to say something that may be a lie.

"And I should have given you the reason not to leave if I had the answer..." She muttered quietly. She struggled to keep herself calm, but she had nothing left, unlike Ariston. At one point, she had knowen true companionship. Ever since she was young, she had been alone....and now, she was more alone than before Ariston had come along. "You ask alot, but give little time for change," Shinra said, her voice strained with fury.

Ariston sat down beside Shinra, realizing, though not completely understanding why, that she had just resisted giving him a swipe. He bumped against her shoulder, like he used to, before their feelings had turned to more than friendship.

"Shin, I would have given you all the time you needed, all that you asked for," the tone of his voice was his Mystic-I-Have-Some-Wisdom-To-Impart-On-You voice; soothing and deep, the type that seemed to hold all the answers to every question you'd ever asked in your life. "But you didn't even attempt to change. I finally realized that while you might have loved me, you didn't love me enough to change. And I was only hurting us both by staying. You really fault me for doing what I thought was right for the both of us?"

Which was a half truth really. Shinra still didn't know the whole truth. And Ariston really did owe it to her to explain. If she was willing to hear and believe it as well.

The bump made knocked her concious back to how Ariston had normally greeted her, a frienly push to get her attention. She listened in silence, and clsed her eyes. What hje had thought was right...he would have thought different if she had ever told him...She could do the least by telling him now.

"Ariston....you know how I never told you why I loved you? Sure, I showed it, but I never put it into words?" She asked quielty, straining to be calm.

"Yes, but only if you feel like telling me," he said, looking into her eyes. "You should know that, no matter how pissed off I may seem to be at you Shin, I am always here for you. That never changed, that never went away. Only the romantic inclination did."

Which was another half lie. If Ariston hadn't been after Teles and Shinra decided to change, Ariston might have considered trying it with her again. Might.

But, in truth, he still did care about Shinra, cared about how she was, how she was doing in her life. Ariston was a compassionate male. Some said it was a weakness, that he'd never be able to look at things objectively. But he disagreed. It's what kept him grounded to his humanity. If it came with a little heartbreak and pain now and then, well in the end it was worth it.
