It was getting even later in the day and there were still plenty of children to see and still more work to do. The next one coming in was a flamingo child. There were already four children that needed to be taken into a critical condition ward, it was more than he was expecting for something that was recently discovered and he was hoping there would be no more.
However when the next patient came into the room it was obvious his hopes had been shattered. Acklin jumped up from his seat seeing what terrible condition the boy was in. The techs were getting ready with a stretcher but Acklin swooped in before they could get to him, he snatched Lewis up in his arms and dashed down the hall. The techs gave chase knowing by now if they waited around they'd get into more trouble.
They left his guardian there without a word. It had to be evident there was something terribly wrong with the boy. Acklin wasn't sure he would be able to help this one.
-----
Once in the room Lewis was laid down in a bed and quickly hooked up to life support. An oxygen mask was put over his mouth to help his breathing and an IV was slipped into his wrist. The Doctor was running around the room frantically trying to get the child as much help as he could give.

Anger. The one emotion flooded the Zurg's mind. Anger at this planet, anger at the corporation, even anger at his commander. If he hadn't been stationed on this planet, if his commander hadn't ordered him to take the child, if the corporation hadn't created the child to begin with, none of this would have happened!
But Bug knew his anger for those things were empty, something to direct his mind from the real reason, the real shame - himself. It didn't matter that he had never been confronted with a human illness before. All that mattered was that he hadn't been intelligent and instinctual enough to realize that there had been something terribly wrong. He had just pushed it off as something that was normal, or not very serious. How utterly stupid.
Now he was left staring down the hallway that the doctor had wordlessly rushed the boy down. Daring to not even think about the implications, Bug leaned against the wall of the waiting room, crossed his arms, and stared at the floor. He didn't want to make eye contact with the other parents scattered about the room. He couldn't.
---
Lewis's eyes were squeezed shut. Maybe it would cause everything to stop. The awful feeling, the cold, the shaking, it all needed to end. At least Bug was here. The aleen would make everything better. Oh, he was so tired.
The sensation of being jostled from Bug's arms into the arms of the doctor caused Lewis's eyes to flutter open, though the view of the bright lights overhead caused them to close again. The child vaguely registered the fact that he was no longer with his parent, but was too feeble to object.
After they had reached the room, the feeling of the various things being attached to him forced Lewis's eyelids to pry themselves open once again. What was happening? What was this place? Who were these people? Where was Bug? He couldn't see the aleen through his blurry version of the world.
His fear giving him slight strength, the flamingo child tugged weakly at the oxygen mask. "B-buh?"

"It's okay Lewis," The doctor said to him turning his head towards the boy as he flipped some switches and pressed some buttons running back and forth to various machines before pulling his stethoscope up from his neck and putting them in his ears.
"Just relax Lewis, I'm going to take care of you, you'll be alright," He reasured him pressing the stethoscope gently against his chest to listen to the small flamingo's lungs. He hoped he really could take care of him, things were not looking good. He had incompetent staff, and very little knowledge of this damnable virus. He prayed he could get this boy into stable condition. This was the worst case he'd seen yet.

The doctor's words were a muddled noise in his ears. As much as he wanted to know what exactly was happening, Lewis could not bring himself to understand the doctor beyond his name and a few other words. His whole body ached. His eyes were too tired to focus and now it seemed his ears were too tired to listen.
The cool metal of the stethoscope touching his chest sent a slight jolt of surprise through him. Dropping his hand from the breath mask onto the bed below, Lewis clutched loosely at the sheets, finding comfort in their softness. At least his fingers worked.
Why wasn't Bug here yet? The boy's glassy eyes attempted to wander around the room again, hoping to catch a glimpse of a green smudge, a Bug-lump, or anything. But nothing. Underneath the breath mask, he bit his lip and uttered a whimper.

As the doctor rushed around trying to stabilize the fading child, the worse happened. The boys heart rate started to slow and he would slip out of consciousness.
Acklin rushed over to him and began looking him over frantically, trying to wake him up as he checked his vitals but Lewis would not wake up.
"Damnit!" He cringed and headed towards a phone on the nearby wall and dialed up Alan, "Yes, Mr. Rikery...it would seem that one of the children have slipped into a coma...no...not much yet...I'm doing all I can....yes, alright." He hung the phone up and went over to the child to start hooking him up to even more machines, things were not looking good...

This boys case was by far one of the worst, but he was still hanging in there. Lewis was the first that Acklin made his trips to quickly injecting the life saving vaccine.
It would take a few hours to completely kick in but hopefully if all went well the following day he would be able to go home.
