The clock read one in the afternoon as Acklin pushed his glasses up on his nose waiting for the next child. He had been seeing children since seven in the morning and it didn't look like it was going to slow down anytime soon. Two children had already been taken in critical condition.
The next scheduled child was a boy, part chihuahua, Acklin had to become used to these strange genetically altered children. He'd have to look at more data and charts about them later, to see where exactly the DNA sequences had been changed so he was also taking note of many of their physical appearance. Though...when this boy came in notes were the last things he was going to take.
"Another stretcher, now." Acklin snapped at the techs standing by. Once Cassi was loaded up he turned to his mother, "Please wait here, you'll be informed as to what his condition is as soon as possible." Was all he had to say before quickly carting the convulsing boy off to a critical condition room.
-----
He didn't seem as terribly ill as some of the other children but he still seemed in rather bad shape. After he was transferred into a clean white medical bed Acklin went to flipping on some switching and bringing an IV drip over to the side of the bed.

The door opened and Reign came in. Cassi was in her arms, wrapped up in some blankets. The boy was shaking and the woman looked like she was close to panicking. Her fears were confirmed when the doctor immediately had a stretcher brought in and she set the boy on it. Moments later, he was already being wheeled off and she was told to stay put...
To Cassi, everything seemed to be going in a sort of blur. He was being carried by his mom. Now she was setting him down. And now... "MOMMY!! MOOOOMMMY!!" The boy screamed as much as was possible from a sick kid, his arms reaching out as he was wheeled away. He was being taken from her!
Cassi took a glance at who was pushing the cart and his voice screeched up an octave. "MOOOOOOMMMMMYYY!" The scary techs were taking him away from her!!!
Tears ran down his face as Cassi was quickly moved to another bed and a scary looking man was bringing stuff over to him. He glanced up at the IV bag and line, wondering what was going to be done with that... "I-I want m-my mommy...." The kid whimpered.

"Cassidy, you need to settle down." The doctor said rubbing the top of the boys head, "I'm going to make you better but you need to calm down okay?" He said turning to prepare a cotton ball and the IV, "Your mommy can't see you yet, we need to work on getting you better first, alright?" He said trying to calm the little guy down.
He moved back over to the side of the bed and rubbed the damp cotton ball on the boys wrist, "Now Cassidy, I need you to be a big boy, I'm going to have to get you hooked up to an IV, it might sting a bit but I need you to hang in there okay?" He said trying to calm him down as he peeled the wrapping off of the IV needle.

The boy's lower lip quivered. "Want mommy..." Well, he wasn't screaming anymore, so that was good, right? "Want Kate, too..." If he couldn't have his mother, Kate was the next best thing to have, in his mind.
The boy gave a bit of a start as he saw the needle and his shook his head. "No ouchies!" If being a big boy meant getting stuck with a needle again, forget it! The boy was already curling up on his bed and probably would've run off if he'd been able to. It was just luck that the kid was sick enough to be stuck in the bed.
----
Back where they'd separated, Reign was pacing, wanting that doctor back here and fast. He had some explaining to do on what was going on. It looked like Cassi wasn't the only sick one and this worried her even more. Was something bad going around?
Another woman appeared, looking almost as frantic as the first and the two hugged. "What's he got?" Niki asked and got only a shrug in response.
"The doctor took him back there," Reign gestured in the direction, "on a stretcher..."
Moments later, the two women were both pacing.

In the condition the child was in Acklin didn't have time to try and calm him down, he went around to the other side of the bed and pulled out a tank of some sort of gas. He wheeled it over and unhooked the mask, "Okay Cassidy, just breath in this, it will help you calm down." He said placing the anaesthesia mask on the young boy.
He had to get him calmed down, and hooked up to the monitors. He had no idea how long this virus would take to claim a life, and he rather hoped he wouldn't find out.

Cassi's eyes went wide as the man tried to put a mask on him. The boy turned his head into the pillows, but it didn't take much for the doctor to get the mask on the small child. Frightened, Cassi's breathing increased, sending enough anesthesia to knock him out rather quickly. The boy did, however, get revenge as a warm dampness soaked through his shorts and onto the sheets.
The frightened child's world turned dark and he fell into blackness.

"You, get some clean sheets and clothes for the boy," Acklin said rubbing the bridge of his nose as he waved to a tech.
"What? Aww, why me?" The tech pouted as he was now told he had to clean up after the child. He didn't sign up for this sort of thing.
"This boy has a potentially deadly viral infection, is scared witless and you are standing there arguing with me?!" The doctor said his sleeplessness and infuriation with the lack of competence around here catching up to him.
The tech opened his mouth but decided against what he was going to say. He scurried out the door before the doctor could lecture him some more.
At least now the doctor could hook Cassidy up to an IV, the heart rate monitor and exchange the anesthesia for an oxygen mask to try and stabilize him without a struggle.
Once Cassi was all hooked up Acklin went on to check all of his vitals, jot down some notes and observations, and go over to the next room to see how his other patients were fairing.

The tech returned after Acklin had left and changed the boy's bedding and put dry clothes on the kid. The whole thing took about a minute and the D-tech was off again, leaving the slumbering child alone.
Slowly, the world started to return to Cassi, starting with the sound of the heart rate monitor. The beeping of the machine was the only constant as he tried to bring himself up out of the world of darkness. He could feel something on his face and reached up to brush it off. His arm rose weakly and he felt something give a slight tug.
Slowly his eyes opened and the boy peered about the sterile white room. Where was he? Where was his mother? What was going on?? He glanced down at his arm and spotted the IV. And the memories started to come back. They'd taken him away from his mother! And that guy had wanted to stab him with a big needle and then a mask was put over his mouth an-
Cassi tugged at the oxygen mask, but was unable to get it off. Finally, the boy dissolved into tears; confused, hurt, and alone.

The affects of anesthesia on this child was already known. The doctor needed another child to operate on. Hopefully this would be the final stretch that the doctor needed to solve this crisis.
The man walked back into Cassi's room. He went over the machines like he had numerous times before and patted the boy on the head before walking over to the oxygen tank and switching the hose to the anesthesia.

Cassi was finally relaxing with the man. Numerous trips in and out without pain or anything scary happening would do that. Though, just like every time, the boy questioned, "Mommy...?" It was more out of lost hope than anything else.
However, when the anesthesia started to kick in, the boy's eyes widened. This was familiar! But his panic caused his breathing to accelerate, which just increased the amount of anesthesia he was getting quicker. The world went dark and the boy relaxed, wetting the bed once again.

Thanks to Cassi and his, unwilling, assistance a vaccine had finally been found. Acklin was quick to come back into the boys room, he needed the vaccine just as badly as all the other children and he wasted no time giving it to him.
Just as quickly as Acklin had come he was gone. There were only a few children left who needed the vaccine, hopefully no more complications would arise and they would soon be free to go home.
