In the anime "Trigun", Wolfwood is more priest-like than in the manga. In the manga, it seems more like his cover-story is just that and nothing more.
What do you think: is Nicholas D. Wolfwood really a spiritual man or not?

Well Spikey, I'd have to say it's more of an in and out of spiritual thing.

He's catholic.
I think he geniuely believes in his faith, but has trouble following it's direct code because of the lifestyle he lives in.
In the anime, he's geninuely a priest. But in the manga, it's debatable if he was sworn into priest-hood (he's far, FAR too young in the manga to do it legally) or if he was just called 'Priest' because he was raised in sort of a 'males only' convent.

Well with his relation to the Gung-ho Guns and the nickname 'Wolfwood the Punisher' I'd say that maybe his priest charade was developed by that nickname. Not saying that God is the punisher, but that it's sort of like a god-like duty to punish people.
I don't know. D=
I think maybe at one time he wanted to truly believe in his religion and take the role of a priest, but on a planet like that, who can you know? Faith in general is just sort of a loosely imaginable thing because there's the constant worry of gunman, losing Plants, and not finding water.
So like... I guess what I'm trying to say is.. He's a priest when he wants to be.

Like I said, in the anime he's a real priest (it showed him being sworn in) and he's much older in the anime than he is in the manga. In the anime he's around 25-30 but in the manga he can't be older than 17 years old.
In the manga I think he might have been sworn into priesthood but I can't be certain. It might just be a sort of 'rouse' he has going on. Though he does know all the 'procedures' so I question if he is or not.

Personally, yes, I do think Wolfwood genuinely believes in his faith. However, just like a lot of people in today's world, he's not all that strict about it. I mean, look at the world he lives in, how harsh it is. It would be very, very hard to be priestly.

Saint Blooregard Well with his relation to the Gung-ho Guns and the nickname 'Wolfwood the Punisher' I'd say that maybe his priest charade was developed by that nickname. Not saying that God is the punisher, but that it's sort of like a god-like duty to punish people.

So like... I guess what I'm trying to say is.. He's a priest when he wants to be. The thing about Wolfwood and his relationship with God, is yes... He's a preist when he wants to be. THAT SAID... The thing about Wolfwood is he worries about his soul, and if he's just a filthy assassin. And anyways, he sets up ideals that are so high, that he ends up tearing himself down. It's a vicious circle, and one that Vash ends up saving him from.... It's here, in some ways, that Vash could be a metaphor for Religion. While Vash certainly, CERTAINLY has his own relationship with God (personally, I think he's somewhat Christian, albeit with Bhuddist principles), it's his lifestyle that Wolfwood has trouble accepting, but which he finally does. In the end, when Wolfwood dies, I think the theme is closure (at least in the manga)... He died at his beloved orphanage, and he accepted the love which he left and felt he could never return to, and having left his part on Livio. .......I love the ending to his storyline.
