if u ask me, i think paul from diamond/pearl is based on silver from gold/silver/crystal. i say this becuz of two reasons:
1) the he treats pokemon. to those have played g/s/c or read the manga, they know that your rival never really treated pokemon right, as paul does now
2) his appearance. i know he has purple hair and stuff, but the similarities, i.e. the style of his hair what he wears.
