FIRST CHARACTER APPLICATION besides CVirus'

Character Name: Wise Spear
Character Allegiance: Other. A member of the Lucanus tribe.
Bond: Giant Stag Beetle, named Greatfang.
Personality: Obviously old enough to know when to joke and when not to, he often comes off as stony, cold, and uncaring, although the love he has for Greatfang is surpassed only by his skill with a spear. Wise Spear lives up to his name, and has a natural rapport with the forests he wanders through, as most of his tribe does. However he seems to have transcended their level of understanding, perhaps in a natural way, slowly becoming one with the forest he loves. He knows that in his old age he will soon join with the earth once again, and he often contemplates this.
History: At the age of fourteen, he recieved his stag beetle, and was blessed with its companionship for the rest of his life, well into his forties. Now, as next in line as cheiftan, he seeks to not only prove himself by finding a cure to the plague, but also wishes to stop the plague from destroying his tribe's way of life.
Motivations: He finds the plague most distressing, and while thankful that his tribe has not succumbed to it, he seeks to find a cure as soon as possible.
Additional Information: A nomadic tribe of giant stag beetle riders, the Lucanus live in a symbiotic relationship with the insects they ride. Their keepers keep the beetles in good care, and in turn, the beetles defend their owners and provide transportation. Although it would be nearly impossible to ride a giant stag beetle while it flies, it doesn�t matter. The flimsy wings have not followed the beetle up the evolutionary path of giantism, and therefore they cannot fly at all. As a matter of fact the shell of these beetles have become more of a folding carapace, used for knocking back foes that attempt to attack the flanks of these great insects. The Lucanus have naturally formed a rapport with the insects they tame and breed. They understand their ways, and the beetles almost seem to understand the Lucanus. Each beetle is given a name and is treated like a child. Each beetle is given a funeral when it dies, and is wept for by many, like a person just died.

The Lucanus believe in a singular god, whose name is Lucanidae, or simply Lucan to those who wish to remain concise. Rituals are commonplace in regard to Lucanidae, and many involve dancing with simple, ritual clothing with the eggs of the giant stag beetles in hand, which are relatively small, about the size of an ostrich egg, but much lighter. The larva within usually grows to a size comprable to a horse or larger, depending on the parents. The hatching itself of a stag beetle egg is a ritual, where the beetle is raised on high, the holder praising Lucanidae for the gift bestowed upon them (the holder is the one who will raise the stag beetle as if it were their child). The name of the beetle shall be called out to the heavens for Lucanidae to hear, and if the stag beetle in their hands does not show any impurities (such as unformed, broken, or deformed mandibles, etc). It is then believed that the stag beetle, their name, and the holder is accepted by Lucanidae and actually blessed by the deity himself. Of course, when the idea of possession of a beetle is absurd to a member of the Lucanus tribe. As a matter of fact, most consider their beetles to be friends or even mentors, through which the voice of Lucanidae may be heard. It is only with the realization that the beetle wishes to help its keeper, or perhaps guardian, does the rider begin to actually ride the beetle. Most, however, come upon this realization early on in receiving their beetle. The beetle reception ceremony is actually a rite of passage carried out when one is fourteen years of age. This year is picked because it is the total number of teeth upon the great mandibles of Lucanidae. The Lucanus do not, however, view other weapons or insects as unholy. They see them all parts of a greater whole, but only consider themselves Lucanus if they worship Lucanidae and follow his will and command.

Names of stag beetles range from simple to complex, and are much like Native American names, such as �The One Who Hunts the Night,� or �Sharp Horn.� Their names are similar to the names bestowed upon children of the Lucanus. Children are considered blessings from Lucanidae as well as the beetles, and neither takes precedence over the other. Both are sacred, according to the Lucanus. The weapon of choice for the Lucanus is naught but spears. Ranging from a simple wood shaft with a sharpened end to solid steel with a conical lance end, spears are considered sacred to the Lucanus, as the half-man, half-beetle deity Lucanidae uses one that shoots through the heavens with a fiery trail. While some might think that individual stag beetles would be branded, perhaps painted, this act is considered what might be called �vandalizing� in the modern day world, and is highly frowned upon and is actually punishable by death. However, if the vandal owns a beetle himself, the beetle does not die along with the owner. It is simply released into the wild, where it has been discovered that they have an incredible, adaptive nature, able to defend itself and find food most adequately on its own.
