To me, there's 4 main types of gamer in today's modern society
Retro Gamers Modern Gamers Casual Gamers The 'Whatever' Gamer
'Retro' Gamers are the ones who have been there since the beginning, with the old 8 and 16 bit eras, who grew up with Sega or Nintendo as the 2 main competitors in the video game war, in a time where games were alot simpler, didn't have to be all about realism, and where there were a much more varied style of games. These are the gamers who tend to prefer games like sidescrollers, platformers etc.
Modern Gamers who have come into gaming from the turn of the Playstation 2, who are used to more modern games such as first person shooters, Racing simulators, and more realistic types of games. 50% of the time, these are the ones bashing on nintendo for being too "Kiddy" and constantly buy the latest madden or Fifa remake every year
Then there's the casual gamers, these are the ones that play for fun. That couldn't care if a game had bloom lighting or anti aliasing to make it look better as long as it was fun, tend to be into games such as Peggle, or Mario party. The groups of gamer around this category tend to be people VERY fresh to gaming, and are just starting playing games.
The Whatever gamer, couldn't care, they play anything which is playable and is good.. tend to be unbiased towards consoles/genre, and are the ones who lay it straight about a game, if its good, they tend to play it, if its not, they let it pass because its s**t, not because its made by anybody.
Retro gamers had a sharp fall around the time of the Playstation 1, where games started going "Realistic" and stoped offering games such as "Chuck D Head", where it was totally fine for a character to go around jumping on platforms and killing enemys by throwing his face into them, games took the "Lets be like life" turn around 2000, where most modern gamers came into gaming.
The Modern gamer didn't have a chance to play games such as Super Mario World or Kibry when they first released, so to them, its "Old" and "Kiddy" because its not all about diving behind one wall, shooting someone and watching the bullets realistically pierce the flesh then running to the next wall to repeat.
Retro gamers felt threatened by the sudden wave of realism that hit gaming, and soon obscure titles which didn't rely on being as close to reality and wasn't afraid to show some balls and try something unique grew slow. The modern gamers started to overtake the retro gamer in terms of numbers, and so the industry moved along with them.
Now with the release of the Wii, where a stream of casual games came along, the "Casual gamer" has had a chance to join the mix, Developers started picking up on the fact that "People wanted to play minimalistic games" and started churning out quick crap to make a quick buck. This is where the sudden rush of sub par quality games such as "Carnival Games" comes in, where the developers couldn't give a s**t about the game as long as it sold to the new market of people who wasnt used to gaming but went along with it anyway because it was easy.
This is where the modern gamer now takes the place of the retro gamer in the days of the Playstation, they are beginning to be the minority, so they feel threatened and start the war which is "Hardcore" vs "Casual"
(And this also brings up a problem with the current 'War' against Nintendo and casual games. People are blaming Nintendo for the crap that comes out, when, if you look, their mostly 3rd party publishers who have jumped on the bandwagon of "Lets be like Nintendo" where Nintendo releases a good 'casual' game, and the 3rd parties follow suit, and ******** up, hopefully with time the casual gamers will realise the difference between a good game and a shitty rushed game, and stop buying them, making designers pull their fingers out of their asses and try some originality instead of trying to copy the latest fad set by Nintendo.)
Meanwhile the "Whatever" gamer, is sitting in the corner laughing at everyone else for being a bunch of retards arguing and supporting their console like it was a god, when their taking advantage and just playing a mix of everything and not having to worry about "how many ps3s did Sony sell this year to compete with Microsoft"
The retro gamers at this point, are rejoicing slightly now that their once great leader Nintendo is finally getting things right and not being beaten like a b***h by Sony and Microsoft. They are rejoicing at the fact that maybe the gaming industry wont be flooded with FPS's following the "Lets be like halo" routine and perhaps we can see more games about intergalactic space monkeys saving the world using cans of beans for weapons.
If you dont understand what i mean by old games having some balls to try something different, play Earthworm Jim on the SNES, you will soon see what i mean.
So the current situation is this. Nintendo have brought one more market of gamers into the mix, the now 'Hardcore' Modern gamers are feeling threatened, The 'HARDcore' Retro gamers, who have been there since the beginning, are now happy that the Nintendo is finally the market leader again, and whatever gamers like myself are having the last laugh by getting the best offer out of the lot and playing whatever they ******** they feel like without having to be called a "fanboy" just because they didn't hump one console harder than the other.

I am totally a "Whatever" gamer. Doesn't matter the platform... it only has to be interesting. If it's not then I don't want to even look at it.

I'm probably the "whatever" type. I know the gaming community can be very competitive, but I wish they lay off the competition and worry about their own problems.

I agree with most of this, but there's some things I'd like to point out.
While Nintendo fanboys are pretty bad, both Sony and Microsoft fanboy/girls are just as bad, except we're not hearing much from either group right now, as they're occupied with actual good games, such as MGS4, SCIV, and GTA 4, among other great titles.
However, Nintendo basically screwed over it's hardcore fans at this E3. There were virtually no hardcore games, and all they really focused on was some casual stuff. Unless you want to count freaking Animal Crossing, then they really didn't have anything for their hardcore fans at all. Long story short, Nintendo just gave it's core audience the shaft.
In fact, if anyone has no right to complain, it's Microsoft. With so many of Sony's exclusive games *coughcoughFFXIIIcoughcough* going over to Microsoft, and Sony's lack of anything else to show, it's not a good time to be a Sony fan. Sure, people have Resistence 2, GOW 3, and and Killzone 2 to look forward to, but let's not forget that Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto, and Devil May Cry were all previously Sony exclusive franchises.
Let's also not forget Home, which, if isn't released soon, may join such titles as Duke Nukem Forever in that it'll become nothing more then some title that was supposed to revitalize fans, but just disappointed them. Littlebig Planet....Personally, I think the people at Sony are putting a little too much stock in the game, but only time can really tell if it will be the huge blockbuster they say it's going to be.

I'm partway between a Modern and Whatever Gamer. I'll play old-school games, but I prefer more realistic games.

The Full English i personally don't agree with any of those you suggested. Likewise. I like to go back from early consoles to the PS3 and everything in between and even though I don't have a favorite genre I have standards. There's certain genres I won't touch (simulation, sports, MMOs, peripheral-based) and I'm far from being the casual/whatever type. I don't see as people being threatened by Nintendo but rather feel that they're not doing the best they can to cater to the dedicated gamers. They know the industry is big enough to exploit and so their niche has become that of the causal sense, just as the PS3 is about media and the 360 is about online communities. And honestly, I've yet to see someone who actually refused to play through a Super Mario game. Even if it was just for 5 minutes, but they went for it.
