User Image

Mito was strewn over a rock, lying on his back and looking up at the sky. It was a very clear day, as were they all, and the few clouds that were floating about up there really didn't look like anything. So that occupation was out. With no clouds to imagine with, he knew there was only one thing left to do: he needed to take a nap.

So that was what he was trying to do. On his back, he had his eyes closed, on paw at his side while the other rested comfortably on top of his chest. His large green body had warmed in the sun, making him all the more comfortable.

It was a glorious moment, so why couldn't he drift off?

Try as he might, he couldn't find that wonderful slumber he was so perfectly set up for. Maybe it just wasn't the day for sleep after all. So what the hell was he supposed to do? His heart had been set on a nap. Sighing, he rolled onto his side, looking down at from the rock at a trail of ants circling around it.

Better than nothing, he supposed.

User Image Laika was bored. It was a familiar feeling for the puppy, who spent so much of her time alone she was in constant need of something interesting to do. Without company, she was compelled, obligated, to amuse herself and normally she was more than capable. Yet something about today was off, and she could not quite get interested in anything. She had tried rolling in dirt, going for a swim, eating bugs: but nothing was paying off.

Weaving in wide arcs, back and forth, as she walked, Laika heaved a sigh and looked up at the sky. Nothing interesting there. She looked over her shoulder, across the plains. Nothing interesting over there, either. She looked down between her paws, at the ground she was passing over. Nothing interesting down there, though she noticed her claws were a bit muddy from the water bank she had been playing at earlier.

Closing her eyes, she decided on impulse to barrel across the flat grass as fast as she could, without looking. It promised to be thrilling, and, if she didn't chicken out and ended up running at full speed, she would jump and it would be like flying. All this she did. keeping her eyes tightly shut, she charged forward, a pink bolt streaking through the plains. She leapt when she felt she could go no faster and, for a moment, she was flying.

Then she landed on something soft and puffy, squishy but sturdy. She opened her eyes, standing atop the strange green rock and looking down at her feet for answers. It looked like she was standing on fur, but that made no sense because rocks didn't have fur. When it moved she was startled, knowing for certain that rocks did not move, and she leaped down from the strange, furred moving rock.

Then she realized it was a lion, and was quite relieved.

"Oh, I really though you were a rock monster!" she barked, oblivious to the fact that she had just pounced a lion, "I'm glad you're not though. I hope I didn't hurt you! I wasn't looking where I was going and I thought I was flying and it was pretty neat. Ew, I'm standing in ants! Are you sleeping? Maybe I should go back to the water hole."

She sat down, having no intention of going anywhere, panting and watching the lion with a happy innocence about her.

“Umph.”

Mito looked away from the ants, suddenly finding something else a bit more interesting. A small pink fluffball that had for some reason decided to use him for a pillow. Or something of the like, it seemed. Good thing it was such a tiny thing, as anything much larger probably would have caused him pain.

As it stood, this thing, whatever it was, easily and painlessly bounced on his soft green body.

“A rock monster?” repeated the animal with a chuckle, looking at the pink, somewhat crazed thing. Now that he had a good look at her, he could see that she was a small pink dog of some kind. Nothing he had seen before, but cute in her own right. The first animal he had seen that wasn’t cat-like.

Sitting up, he stretched his front paws, smiling warmly at the tiny animal. Weird she wasn’t completely terrified of him, considering the difference in their sizes. “Nah, you didn’t hurt me,” he chuckled, “you sure do talk fast. I didn’t think such a small animal would have such a healthy pair of lungs. I wasn’t sleeping, no worries. I was watching those ants you’re standing in.”

He watched the animal sit down, tilting his head slightly to one side. There didn’t seem to be an ounce of worry in this creature.

“So what’s your name, little friend?” he asked lightly, “I’m Mito.”

Laika watched the lion as he moved, marveling by his size and apparent fluffy weight. She liked the way he looked, very soft and squishy, though she knew he was not that doughy since she had already jumped on him. She wagged her tail relentlessly.

"I like the ants, they kind of tickle and it feels weird but that's okay. You're not a rock monster though, I know, I can see that! You're a big... kitty! I've only seen little kitties, but I haven't come this far out before. Are there more big ones like you that I can meet?"

"My name is Laika!" she barked vigorously, "I don't have a family but I'm making friends and that's fun! It's fun to meet you, Meto! Meeto? Mito! I heard you, I'm just playing. I can't make a nickname from your name unless I say Meat or something, or toe, but those aren't very good. Can I call you pillow? You're soft like one!"

She was standing and barking furiously, over excited by the meeting and far too glad for him to actually be speaking back to her. True, she had never met a lion before, but she had met other creatures that had not been quite as happy to engage her in conversation as this large male seemed to be.

"If you weren't sleeping, what were you doing?"

“Kitty?” repeated the large animal, completely baffled. Now there was a name he had never been called before. It was a little endearing, seeing such a small creature jumping about with such enthusiasm for life.

He was starting to think all animals born to the world were depressing, beaten animals regardless of age.

Laughing, he put a paw on top of the jumpy pink thing, trying to calm her down. He moved off after only a few seconds, though, a little worried that he would scare her. Didn’t seem likely though, given what he had seen of her so far. “Of course you can call me pillow,” he told her, “actually, that’s what my name means. Well, pillows, but that’s just the same. It’s nice to meet you, Laika.”

He chuckled to himself. Toe. That really wouldn’t make for a very good nickname.

Watching her bark, Mito thought for a moment she had broken somehow, having never heard the sound before. “I told you!” he chortled, “I was looking at the ants! They’re all smushed now, though, so perhaps I should find something else to do. Any suggestions?”

He couldn’t help but think he had made a mistake in asking her that.

Laika closed her mouth as Mito put his heavy paw on her. She had not bothered to pull her tongue back in, which resulted in the tip of it sticking out of her pink muzzle as she looked up at the lion. Her eyes were bright and clear, innocent and untroubled by any wisp of shadow. Wagging her tail vigorously, she was happy to hear that her nickname was appropriate.

His paw had made her collapse to the floor, as though her legs were unable to bear the weight. It was not the case, however, as he barely put enough pressure on her for it to be considered a touch and yet she flattened herself on the ground regardless. She now had to look up at him at an even greater distance, caning her neck to see his face.

"Pillow! That's a great name! I'm glad I thought of it. And whoever gave you your name, too, because it means the same and that's neat," she did not get up as he moved his paw, tilting her head at him and absorbing his question.

"Looking at ants is boring! Let's run! You want to run? We can race but I'm pretty fast! There are bugs over there we can chase, do you want to do that? We could go swimming! Or we could climb some trees or rocks or go exploring or we could go find more big kitties to talk to!"

She was full of suggestions, a sudden surge of energy forcing her to leap to her feet and race a large circle around the lion, "let's do it!" she said, as if all of those things counted as one endeavor. She completed another lap, "let's go come on come on come on!"

Mito laughed at the thought of running, his large stomach jumping up and down slightly. Like jell-o, just in a larger volume and coated in a thick layer of green fur. The only thing that would get the animal to run would be a herd of elephants coming up quickly behind him. Other than that, he didn’t need to concern himself with running about. Well, save for hunting.

But that was something entirely different.

“Whoa, whoa!” he chuckled, not trying to keep an eye on her as she sped around him like her tail was on fire, “alright! We can play, I don’t mind that. But what do you want to do? You said more than one thing there, and I don’t know which you would enjoy more!” More importantly, he didn’t know which would allow him the most time to just lie around and watch her. Not running, of course. If they climbed some trees or something, then he would be able to relax.

Hopefully she would pick that one.

Starting to move, he made sure not to accidentally stepping on the woman as she was trying to get around him. She was very quick, he had to admit it. But then again he probably only thought that because he was an incredibly slow animal by nature. Anything that moved faster than a stroll he considered swift.

"Why don't we walk for a little? Maybe take a nap in the sun?"
PostPosted: Sat Aug 23, 2008 3:52 pm

Laika shook her head furiously, coming to a so sudden a stop she toppled over her front legs and skidded a few inches awkwardly before righting herself and plopping down on her haunches. Not phased, she continued to shake her head to the same beat as before.

"Walking isn't fun! I've been walking all day! And it's not dark!" She did not explain that it not being dark meant it was no time for sleeping, imagining he would catch on to that logic on his own. Besides, she had many more important things to say, "I think we should go play! I haven't had any thing to eat yet today if you wanted to go hunting with me. You're a big kitty and I bet you could get something good."

She grinned up at him, as if she were capable of reading the things he least wanted to do, and was suggesting them out of spite. Of course, the free spirited, innocent puppy would never do any such thing, and was just following the idea that because he was a large, apparently well fed carnivore he clearly liked to hunt for food.

"It's hard for me, because I'm so little to catch anything big but it would be a lot of fun to see someone catch something bigger than a lizard and I bet you could! You could catch a whale if you wanted to, I bet. Though I haven't seen any around here, except in the sky. Haha, not really because I don't even know what a whale is. Someone I was talking to once told me about it but I never saw them again, which happens a lot, but they really do sound big! But I bet you're bigger!"

"Come on let's go hunt something!"

As far as following the logic between dark and sleep, Mito failed. But then, he wasn’t the brightest bulb in the closest. Still, he didn’t feel like asking a small creature to explain herself because he wasn’t sharp enough to keep up with her, so he let the subject drop with a sagely nod and a shrug of his fluffy shoulders.

Then she mentioned hunting, his most loathed past time. What was he supposed to do, though? Tell the hungry creature that hadn’t eaten in a whole day that she would just have to tend to herself because he was too self-serving to lend her a paw? Sighing, he took a moment to weigh his limited options, a smile spreading over his muzzle when he came up with something rather cunning.

“How about we fish?” he asked, “fishing is fun, and they taste really good.” He was trying to sell her on the idea. Who cared about fish being killed?

Listening to her mostly inane babble continue on much longer than it needed to, Mito felt a strong pang of pity for the pink dog. She seemed so innocent, but talked about being alone and being hungry. Even with that smile, it had to be a sad life for her. Perhaps nothing she had been able to really comprehend in her young heart, but sad nonetheless.

Now he really had to help her out.

“Haha, I’m sure I could take a whale,” he replied with no clue as to what a whale was, “don’t you worry about that! Alright. If you would rather hunt than fish, we’ll do that. Whatever you want.”

"I'VE NEVER HAD A FISH BEFORE!" Laika all but screamed at him, her excitement exploding through the air with impressive reverberation across the open area. The grass under her feet seemed to shudder, though it might have been from her building energy. Her muscles seemed to be vibrating as she kept herself in place by sheer force of will, in order to talk with, or shout at, Mito.

She barked eagerly, unable to contain herself for a moment longer, leaping at him in a furious tackle. She bounced harmlessly off his fluffy body, rolling quickly to her feet and tackling him again. This time she maintained her footing, pushing against him with her head as her paws dug dutifully at the earth beneath her.

"Let's go! Fish need water, right, so let's find some fish! I mean water! And fish! Let's go find them both! I don't want to eat water though because it would fill my stomach and make me heavy and that doesn't make me feel good. What do fish taste like? Are they very big? I don't want to be eaten by anything, but that's okay because you can take care of me so who cares!"

She gave up on her efforts to push him and bounced high into the air as she jolted away from him, flying like a shot behind him. She grabbed hold of his tail in the soft of her muzzle, tugging on it impatiently.

"Leph goth!" she said, her mouth full of his fluff.

Suddenly regretting making the suggestion, Mito had to wait a moment for his ears to stop ringing before he could reply to the excited wild dog pup. Blinking, he looked down at her, smiling in an amused way. “So does that mean that’s what you would like to do?” he asked her, soon becoming acutely aware that he would not be receiving an answer before being attacked. Smile fading, he watched the dog turn into some kind of pink blur and launch herself at him without a second thought about it.

Good thing she was so small, he noted as she rebounded off his stomach like a bug against tree.

Raising a paw, he moved himself away from her pushing, grinning as he did so. Standing up, he looked around, sniffing the air for some signs of water. “Don’t worry,” he assured her, “fish aren’t bigger than you are. At least, not the ones I’ve seen. And they’re delicious! I can’t really describe their taste. I love them, and I know they’re not like anything else I’ve eaten. Not like animal meat at all. Even though… they are animals… I just mean fish is a different kind of animal.”

Oh great, the rambling was contagious.

Watching her get behind him, he turned his head over one shoulder, feeling the tug of his tail though he couldn’t quite catch sight of her behind his own large frame. “Alright!” he laughed, “come this way, there’s a good source of water not far from here that’s full of fish.” He started to walk, heading opposite the way she had been tugging. Unaware that she might still be clasping his tail, he was more than capable of dragging her along in the dirt.

When Mito got up Laika was sent sprawling, but it hardly impeded her efforts to pull on his tail moments later. His moving while she was still attached to that appendage, however, put her in a bit of a spot. At first she dug her feet into the earth, as if to keep herself steady and walk along with him, but he was so large she was unable to keep her paws on the earth.

Letting go was not an option. Lifting herself onto her haunches, her hind legs settled all her weight as her front paws waggled in the air, she walked in strange, quick two stepped strides behind him. It was fun and totally worth the effort, and she opened her mouth to tell Mito to look back at her.

Which resulted in her falling backwards into the dirt. Flopping back with a yelp, she was on her four feet almost before the sound had left the air, laughing hysterically as she ran to catch up to Mito's front half. She bounded next to him, looking up at him with large, excited sea green eyes.

"You should have seen that! I was walking on my back feet! But I fell! I was biting your tail and then you were walking and I was running with you but it didn't work but then I fell! No! I got up on my two feet first and that was the awesome part! And THEN I fell! But that's okay because I've never walked like that for so long and it was really cool and I wish you had seen it because I think you would have liked it!"

She darted between his legs, appearing on the other side of him and panting as she spoke again.

"This one time I was playing with my friend Suika and I fell, but it wasn't as cool as that because I wasn't walking on my back legs!" She explained, pointlessly and yet with as much excitement that it was like she was telling him the meaning of the universe.

Mito listened, laughing as she went on and on about something that had happened two seconds ago. It was like she was telling him something wonderful that had happened to her years ago but was still printed in her mind. Sill thing she was, acting like falling over was such a huge moment in her life.

She would probably forget about it the moment they got to the river, possibly even before that.

“That sounds so cool!” Mito exclaimed, not above pretending that her story really was the best thing in the world. After all, she was happy. Why shouldn’t he be happy for her? “I wish I would have seen it! You fell over twice? How did I not see this?! You didn’t hurt yourself, did you? I bet such a tough pup like you didn’t get a scratch!” That was his subtle way of making sure she was alright. Even if she was bouncing off the walls again (whoa-oh) he knew she might have gotten an injury if she brushed against a rock or something.

Then, just like that, she was gone. Blinking, he turned his head around, letting her run under him as he got it around to meet her when she emerged on the other side of him. “Really now? You fall too much! You need to be more careful,” he advised, walking once more, “now come along, the water isn’t far from here.”

And it really wasn’t. Not ten minutes later they were able to see a long river running through the land, almost out of place in the dusty location. It was blue as could be and several feet wide, probably deeper than it appeared to be as well. It pooled into a large standing body, the trail running in the opposite direction stretching past the horizon and into unknown places.

“Here we are,” he hummed, “now sit tight and watch me fish, okay? Then you can give it a try.”
PostPosted: Thu Sep 04, 2008 12:52 pm

Laika bounced and shook her head, stumbling and righting herself quickly as she said, "I didn't hurt myself! I'm pretty good at falling down, because I can get up and I'm fast so if I have to run away I can do that too. I like to roll! I was behind you, though, so you didn't see because you're so big! I don't think you can turn your head to see behind you that far, can you? I wouldn't be able to, if I was round and fluffy, but I'm small and I can, see!" She demonstrated, spinning around as her head guided her body.

She was oblivious to the fact that she was calling him fat, just knowing that he was, in fact, a very round and large animal. The like of which she had never seen before. She did not think it was odd, or anything to do with him, really. Just that it was his breeding, and he was supposed to look that way. So why would it be rude to talk about it?

Her excitement peeked as they reached the water. She ran to it barking, splashing at the bank and nipping at the droplets of water that flew into the air. Panting, already soaking wet, she looked back at him and sat down, wagging her tail expectantly. The pink limb swished the water around vigorously, creating a small torrent behind her and upsetting whatever fish might swim too near.

"Okay, you fish and I watch! I can do that but I want to fish too so don't eat them all! Are there very many? You can have more if there aren't because you're older than me! And I'm used to not eating very much! I do want to taste one though! You said they were great, right? Sounds fun! Wait." she stopped abruptly. "You're a fish? I watch you be a fish? Is that how you catch them? Do they look like lions?"

Mito was having a hard time deciding whether or not he was being teased the more Laika spoke. Had such comments of how round he was come from any other creature, he would have taken offense. But this was Laika. The crazy, young, innocent creature who didn’t seem to have the capacity to lie, much less say something with the point of being malicious. She was merely speaking of the observations she had made of his frame, not calling him fat.

That was the story he stuck with.

All he could do was smile. Intentionally spiting him or not, her eccentric speaking habits had him bound to listen. Perhaps speaking too long would cause her to explode.

Letting her scamper ahead, becoming known to the notion that trying to stop would be impossible, he watched her bark at the water. Certainly a loud creature, these wild dogs. He was glad lions didn’t have such a loud call. Getting closer to the water in his own time, the male watched her tail frighten off just about anything they might have been able to catch. Nearing a good spot to hunt from, he heard it again.

A request to refrain from eating them all. Did she really think he was capable of it?

He wasn’t that big, just a little… wide.

“What? No no, there’s plenty. Don’t worry. Sit out of the water. You’ll scare them off like that!” he laughed, “I’ll get you one first, alright? And… no. They’re not like lions. I’m not a fish! Silly flower, sit on the bank and watch. You’ll get to see one soon, I promise.” He looked into the water, waiting for it to calm and the fish to return. Didn’t take long, and soon he was staring at a small, but still adequate fish. One swipe of his powerful paw was enough to send it splashing out of the water and onto the dirt, the fish flopping about helplessly in the open. “There!” Hooted the male triumphantly, “now that’s a fish!”
