I think it's a pelt that's there for decoration. Either that, or it's just fur (I mean, Sesshoumaru's fur, not fur from an animal).

Ya know, I have been to sooooooo many of these debates and everyone has all these crazy or sensable ideas about what it is. I have thought a lot about it, and have done a lot of research, and I have finally come to a reasonable conclusion:

You see.... Sess can transform into a wolf right... its his own "main" or pelt as you might say it...

when sesshoumaru transform he uses it as a the fur on his foot. Also when he is fighting he could use it as a wip to drag people in closer. and also he use as a pillow or a healing when he get injured. That is what is use for. and to make him look cute. I'm a sesshoumaru expert. that why I know.

Sesshomaru's 'fluff' actually came from his Father. He wanted to be so much like his father and so much stronger, he actually got fur from his father to keep. In the ep where he first meets Rin, you notice then his fluff is not part of him, he took it off his shoulder completely and is laying on it like a body pillow or something...O_O
