A Short Bus Ninjas Production

Since the possibilities of Halo 3 in its multiplayer and forge glory are near endless, we at Short Bus Ninjas decided to test it. To that end, we are in the process of creating the ultimate glory that is Mages vs. Mars.

Those of you who are familiar with the Mahou Sensei Negima manga series should instantly recognize that I am referring to the epic simulated combat event on the third day of Mahorafest, pitting the unsuspecting students of Mahora Academy against an unrelenting foe in the form of a thousands-strong droid army created by the genius Chao Lingshen with the intent of revealing magic to the world. Mages vs. Mars has gone on to become the single most epic event to date in the Akamatsuverse, and we at Short Bus Ninjas have created this project in an attempt to emulate and enhance the glory of the battle.

We are creating a series of forged multiplayer maps based loosely on the six defense points around the World Tree, and a functional gametype that features one team as the Mage defenders, and one team as the relentless Martian droid army.

To date, we have completed the Mages vs. Mars VIP gametype, and the maps of the Tatsumiya Shrine, Echo Base, and Defense Point Foxtrot. We've also completed a map of the Hinata House on the side. While not an official Mages vs. Mars map, we'll probably play the gametype on that map just to see what it's like.

The ultimate goal of this project is to create a Mages vs. Mars Halo 3 machinima.

Resemblance to Inspired Defense Point: Minimal

As the first of six target maps, the original Short Bus Ninjas design team of myself, RAVEN NULL, Freyja14, and ACTION JARED proceeded into the blank canvas of Foundry and started to build. Given the basic information that they would be building a knockoff of a Japanese shrine, RAVEN NULL set to work on the left-side bunker area, while ACTION JARED and Freyja14 went to work on the right-side, and I mostly supervised and gave input and ideas. I'm no builder by any means, anyway.

Before long, the two sides began to take shape, and swiftly began to be referred to by status: RAVEN NULL's side became the defense chokehold side, and Freyja14 and ACTION JARED's side was largely open to attack but carried the more offensive weapons and gear. RAVEN NULL made a creative use of the large walls, shield doors, and barricades to create easy cover for defense forces and bottlenecks to force the enemy through.

In addition to the easily-defendable area on the left, a Warthog with an MG turret was placed just outside the shield wall to add a touch of 'realism' to go along with a cutscene that will be used in Kuro's Mages vs. Mars.

The battles are not merely limited to the bunker defense areas. Should they be breached, defense forces can set up inside the hallways, where there are enough shotguns, rockets, and hammers lying around to stage an effective last stand. And if you're wondering what the Mage side is doing with gravity hammers, just squint real hard and pretend it's a staff.

Of course, seeing all that firepower in the hands of the Mage Knights, you'd think that the droids would not have a prayer of capturing the so-called weak link in the chain of defense points. We like to think otherwise:

Viertel Am See Plaza

Base Map: High Ground
Time to Complete: One day, minus tweaking

More famously known as Echo Base, Viertel Am See Plaza is the site of some of the fiercest fighting at Mahorafest, second only to the desperate final battle at the World Tree Plaza. Defended by the members of the Mahora Halo Enthusiasts' "Fireteam Charlie" Echo Base is the only defense point that made use of live ammunition, up until the point where Fireteam Charlie's "marines" began spreading to other defense points.

This map went into production from RAVEN NULL's devious architechtural plotting, knowing only that he needed to build a highly-defensible base that would be difficult and time-consuming for the droids to overrun. To this end, he established the front gate as the natural first line of defense, by placing a pair of turrets in the guard tower to provide an interlocking field of fire from all three turrets, making approach highly difficult.

In order to balance out the heavy fire field, the droid spawn area was equipped with a Wraith (representing the droids' heavily-armored spider walkers), rockets, and a sniper. A later moment of insight on my part led to the spawns of the Wraith and the droid team going into the water, with Sentinel beams (our answer to the droids' strip ray) placed in front of all eight spawns. The reason for this new spawn placement was to nod back at the original manga battle, in which the droids appeared and attacked en masse out of the lake.

I later decided to change the Mahorans' first defense line, moving it out into the pillbox outside the main gate. Adding a pile of assault rifles and battle rifles, as well as two rocket spawns, into the pillbox turned it into a position that could heavily harass the droids for a considerable amount of time. With the gaping hole that's normally in the pillbox sealed by crates and barricades, the position is defendable until a Wraith blast gets lucky, or the droids get a good sniper.

Upon being overrun, the Mahorans manning the pillbox, as well as those manning the main gate and the guard tower, can easily make their way into the heavily-fortified area of the base by use of a teleporter placed in the guard tower building. Of course, the enemy can also use this teleporter...

User Image

The fortified room of the base is where most of the fighting, and the fiercest fighting, is expected to occur. Counting the teleporter, there are four ways in and one exit toward the command center. Two of the exits are blocked by barricades and crates. The majority of the fighting will be focused around what I like to call the "Tantive Corridor." The entrance that is closest to the back of the map is blocked by two stacked barricades that can be destroyed by the droids to gain entry into the fortified room. The other entrance is harder to break into, and is guarded by a shotgun spawn.

And lastly, the droids' prize is the command center. Situated in the center of the base, all entrances into it have been blocked except for a single bridge walkway which is barricaded to protect occupants from small-arms fire. This creates a natural chokepoint, particularly when paired with the multiple close-range weapons inside the command center. The VIP is expected to remain inside the command center, as it's the most defensible part of the map, but they are by no means restricted to doing so.
