As a person who is not superstitious, I have always been wondering why people believe in ghosts, spirits and other organisms that we do not know the existence of, such as aliens or vampires. Is it merely fantasy in people's minds meaning psychological weakness or the broader sense of creativity?

arrow Discuss:
- Superstitions
- Believing in the existence of the unproven creatures
- What you believe, why and why not

Well...I am superstitious to an extent...I mean, I do not think there are ghosts and such like in Ju-on or in Boogeyman...like those one can see, but I do believe that there are some sort of spirits in the world.
How can I explain this...it's like...'Force' in Asian cultures. A power or spirit that has not been yet proven or seen...sometimes, I feel as if somebody's looking at me, even though I'm alone, that kind of thing. Yeah...that just didn't make sense what I said...did it, lol.

I'm a strong believer in science. Science proves things. So until there is actual proof of these kinds of things existing, than I won't believe in them. I mean, if these things really exist, than it should be no problem in proving their existence.

Superstitions are stupid; the ones like don't walk under a ladder or crossing paths with a black cat.

But ghosts-- ghosts exist. What the hell d'you think Ouiji (Did I spell that right?) boards are for? Granted, lots of times they don't work.. but that goes with the sometimes-true 'just because you've never seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist'. I've never seen a two dollar bill, but they obviously exist.

I mean, yeah, the boogeyman is crap. Pure crap. Stuff that parents make up to scare the s**t out of their children. But 'unproven creatures'? What, like aliens? Yeah, we're probably not the only ones out here. Space is endless, hence the name. But there's no aliens within lightyears of here most likely, so who cares? And mythical creatures.. they exist, but not as the myths tell them. There's a guy that raises unicorns, but they're not like you see them in stories, y'know, the horses with a giant sparkly horn on their forhead. They look sort of like.. giant mountain goats or something. And they have a horn in the middle of their forehead, making them unicorns.

I kind of agree with Shoeless Saint. Science does not have proof for everything, but what science provides are facts.

I've seen a show about a person who has seen a ghost and got her apartment checked out by an exorcist :/ and bam, the exorcist somehow new there really was a spirit on the staircase to the girl's apartment after saying some mysterious mumble jumble. I laughed through the whole thing. There are some parts in my that sort of thinks ghosts and such exist...but my rational mind doesn't believe in it, at all. (did that make sense? :O)

By the way...what's an Ouiji board? I tried searching for it, and I got Ouija...I don't think that's the one..it's a name of a game it seems...lol

Ouija (Wee-gee) board is basically a board game of sorts. Just Wiki Ouija and you'll see the whole thing with it.

I'm superstitious to a point. Like step on a line break your mothers spine, step on a crack, break your mothers back, that's just nonsense

I get this nagging feeling when I walk into a house. I don't get it like every time I walk into a friend's house or anything, just if it's old or unfamiliar. Mostly it happens when we're going to move into it. Usually once the house is familiar the feeling and questioning goes away. Like, my dad's house? I kept thinking,"I wonder who died in here. . .I wonder how. . ." I mean, I don't think some dude is going to appear before me, and I do not believe I'll hear sounds.

My mom has this idea that everything happens for a reason. She believes that her dad is watching over her to some extent. I would love to believe that. I, like you've said, can't seem to get it through my rational mind. But I do wish he was, and it's a romantic-like idea. But she also has other reasons to believe in them. She's never been to Virginia to visit the hotel like my teacher has (she says there are ghosts, no doubt about it. She says she stayed in this hotel that was truly haunted. Apparently a man in the army, I believe he was a general, was shot in the room where she stayed and I guess you could hear a little girl giggling and such.) Yet she believes that there are. She told me (and this is shaky, I admit) that when she was growing up she'd go to her friend's house and the door would like, open periodically. The screen door would. She says it wasn't poor weather or anything, but it'd fly open. Not just kinda open a little, no, fly open like someone opened it, then slam shut. Not exactly concrete evidence I'll say, yet I don't doubt the authenticity so maybe it's proof.

Vampires. Ah, yes, I went through a phase where I would tell myself things like,"If I jumped of the cliff (Technically it was like. . .a rock formation. . .That gave way to an abyss where trees inhabited the bottom), maybe Lestat would come and save me," or, "Maybe if I jumped down there, Marius would catch me.". It was just kinda one of those random thoughts. What would it feel like if I jumped? Would I really die, or could something save me? I didn't want to die, I just didn't want to deal with all the stuff in my life and I had a feeling that if I did something drastic someone secretly watching over me could take me away before harm could befall me. A dream, more or less. I don't literally believe vampires walk among you and I every day, and they were never anything to fear for me. Vampires do exist in cults, sure, but they tend to be people who claim to 'need' blood, and they find people willing to spare it I guess. I think it's weird, but to each their own.

Aliens? I've never believed in them. Last year there was a crop circle nearby. It's not common. . . I thought that was truly cool. Did I really believe an alien space ship made those circles? No. I just wished it wasn't so bluntly obvious that it had to be either the people lying for attention (hah, okay, that's not as likely as the second option) or a group of kids messing around. It could have been adults. . .I don't know. It was precise, I don't think any teenagers could have pulled it off, and don't think any adult would do it, but maybe.

I have never been the superstitious type at all. To believe in the matter of a creature that has had no explanation is wasting brain power. I just choose to either be ignorant and naive about it or I am correct on such a thing. There are few things in this world that are correct though. It does make for a good television show, however. There are a few that do not seem so faux in the making.

I believe in science, just like Shoeless Saint. But there is still a part of me that wants to believe. Idk? But yeah, a Quija board is a bord with all the letters of the alphabet on it and the words yes and no. You have this triangulat piece of glass thingy and you say stuff to the 'spirit' and it makes you move your hand over what it wants to say. Like: Spirit, what is your name? the your hand will wave over the letters of it's name one at a time. 3nodding I had one xd
