Ranza prowled the aisles of the children's section. This was difficult to do when you were awkward and gangly and had bright blue feathers instead of hair, since prowling was generally a feline adjective, but she managed it well enough. She slunk past Nancy Drew and The Boxcar Children and The Hardy Boys. She eyed Pippi Longstocking for a long time but eventually dismissed it as being 'too fluffy'. Anne of Green Gables was judged as 'too girly', and there were no words to describe the monstrosity that was 'The Babysitter's Club'.

No. Ranza was in search of an adventure. There were only so many times you could read 'The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle' before you memorized it, and she knew that number to be fifteen. She'd attempted to read about Jacky Faber, and liked the premise of a girl on a sailing ship fighting pirates, which was sort of like Charlotte Doyle, but didn't like the main character's preoccupation with True Love and wasn't sure she understood all of it, anyway.

Maybe someone would know if 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader' was any good. It had a ship on the cover, after all. And she had heard good things about 'Harry Potter'...

Ranza looked around in search of someone to ask, but there was no one in the aisle with her. Maybe back in the reading area? She headed for the end of the row.

Boring, boring, boring. Taig drags a dark hand across the spines of books, rapidly weaving his way through aisles in search of something, anything that catches and keeps his attention. He's already left a path of destruction behind him of books he's pulled from their places and leafed through, only to find they are not what he expected, and subsequently dropped them where he stood.

Far too impatient to actually ask someone to help him figure out what the large numbers on the sides of the aisles actually mean, and just a little too short to read the signs above those numbers that list general subjects, Taig takes to wandering by himself. Not that he really minds, since it just gives him an excuse to make a mess, albeit not a legitimate one.

His finger stops on a tall hardcover book, and he yanks the thing unceremoniously from the wall of neatly organized literature. He rests a foot on the ridge of the lowest shelf and plops the book down on his raised knee to leaf through this one like he had the others. The History of Seafaring Vessels, as it is called, keeps his attention for as long as there are new pictures of boats and ships on every page he turns to.

There was no one in the reading area, either. Ranza grumbled in frustration. Didn't anyone like books anymore? Leaving the children's section, she began to encounter a trail of destruction as she continued her search for another child, or a store employee, or anyone at all. She certainly hoped she wasn't following a bear.

No, not a bear. Rounding a corner, she discovered that the path of debris ended with a boy about her own age and just as tall and gangly. He had an enormous book balanced on his knee, a grown-up book from the looks of it. The pages were colorful from a distance, but it was probably pictures of kidneys or something. Grown-up books were like that.

But maybe he could help her.

"Hey," Ranza said, approaching him, "Have you read 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader'?"

The image on the page became clearer as she got closer. It was a sailing ship!

"Hey, what book's that?" she asked.

"Ionnoh, something about boats," Taig grunts, not looking up from the pictures. He skims through them quickly, like watching an animation of the progression of sea faring vessels.

He stops on something that has merchant sailors and grins, poking the page to point out a man's cutlass. "That's so cool."

Ranza leaned over the boy's shoulder to investigate the page he had indicated. "The swords carried by merchant marines were primarily decorative in purpose, but were also meant to be used in case of a pirate attack," she read, and nodded vigorously. "That is so cool!"

Realizing her close proximity to the boy, she stepped away hastily and awkwardly stuck out a hand to shake. "I'm Ranza," she declared. Her face burned red.

Taig just looks at her hand blankly, and instead squints up at Ranza's face, wondering why she looks so flustered. "I'm Taig," he finally answers, flipping the page and ignoring his manners, since his mother isn't around to enforce them.

"You look like the pirates in these pictures," the boy comments, grinning. "Only, you're a girl," he adds with a teasing sneer.

Ranza's face burned red again, but in frustration rather than embarrassment. Something about that statement set her off like all the noogies in the world couldn't.

"Who says girls can't be pirates, too?" she demanded, and searched for something to back it up with. She'd spent all summer reading pirate books, she had to know something! "What about Mary Read? Anne Bonny? Elizabeth Swann?"

She grinned challengingly at him. Beat that!

Taig stifles a snort, and continues to flip pages without even looking at the book anymore. "Elizabeth Swann?" he laughs lightly, really not cluing into her touchiness on the subject. "Pleeeeease. Most she did was faint like a sissy and get boys to save her an' stuff."

He turns back to the book, where he just happens to be in the midst of what seems to be a generous selection of famous pirate vessel blurbs. He points to the biggest, meanest pirate on the page. "He'd cut off any Mary Bonny Lizzy heads anyday!"

Ranza read the caption and laughed. That showed how much Taig knew, anyway. Arguing pirates with her was a hopeless endeavor. "Calico Jack," she read, and quoted from memory, "I am sorry to see you here, Jack, but if you had fought like a man, you need not be hanged like a dog."

She stared at him in triumph. "Anne Bonny to Calico Jack just before he died." Ranza had put the quote to memory because, if there was anything cooler than female pirates, it was female pirates who did it better than the male ones.

"And Elizabeth Swann did to do more than faint and get boys to save her. She's the pirate king! Or haven't you seen the third movie?"

Taig rolls his eyes. "The third one was boring," he grumbles, shutting the book swiftly and causing a bit of dust to rise from the pages.

"And I dun care if she actually killed that guy for real. You.. you're just a, a nerd!" he sputters, clearly not the wittiest of boys. He, the one with buck teeth and circle glasses, is claiming the piratess to be the nerd. Classic.

Ranza frowned at him, trying to decide the best way to respond to that. She'd never thought about herself as a nerd before... Who was he to decide who was a nerd, anyway? Had he looked in the mirror lately?

And besides, this whole conversation was terribly off-topic.

"HAVE YOU READ 'THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER' OR NOT?" she demanded, quite a bit more loudly than was appropriate.

A far off voices shushes them for their increasing volume.

Taig snorts again. "I dun even know what that stinky book is, and I dun care to!" he replies condescendingly. He rakes a few fingers behind the spines of a few books on the shelves and yanks them off, from which they fly open and scatter on the ground. The deer boy grins devilishly at his own deviousness.

Ranza watched him, disgusted at the blatant disrespect he held for the books. She didn't go as far as to pick them back up, though. No, that would be letting him win. She wrinkled her nose in frustration.

"You're a pig," she spat spitefully. Take that!

She continued. "I bet you think you're smart, huh? Vandalizing a book store?" She quirked an eyebrow and thought at furious speed. "You've got to be the dumbest person I know. An' ya' know what?"

"You don't even realize you're dumb."
PostPosted: Tue Aug 05, 2008 6:52 pm

Taig laughs all of a sudden, and grabs hold of both his horns. "Funny, I didn't think pigs had horns," he retorts in a highly exaggerated voice, only underlined by bringing it an octave higher than normal.

He grins and claws down a few more books between him and her. "STOP RUINING THE BOOKS, RANZA! You're gonna get in trouble!" he shouts, exasperated and clasping his hands to his cheeks.

"Jerkface!" shrieked Ranza, taking a step back. No way was she taking responsibility for this mess. "I didn't do anything! That was you!"

Oh well. She wasn't going to stand around and get in trouble because of some stupid boy. You had to know when to cut your losses. She gave him a seething glare, turned on the spot, and made a break for the children's section. Hopefully, by the time anyone got here to see what had happened, she'd be long gone.
