On the outskirts of the capital city at the north eastern border lies a rather large two story building. On the back side of the building is a quaint two story domicile with a classic doorstep and porch entrance on the side. On the front side of the building is a parlor and a covered outside area loaded with smithing equipment, A couple of anvils, two coal forges, a dual chamber furnace and crucible by the storage crates in the back corner.

During the day Kel can be seen in the workshop skittering about doing work.

Cataclysm's Edge policy

We do custom jobs: weapons, armor, tools, and machine parts.
We also do smelting for cheap.
Natural metals 3 to 5 copper per bar
Mixed materials 10 to 15 copper per bar
Supernatural metals 10-20 silver per bar

If you provide materials and recipes upon order, those gathering costs are removed from the bill.

Completed works can be picked up at the shop or delivered to you for a small fee.

Kel stumbled up to his home entrance. He quietly unlocked the door and pushed his way in to the night dimmed living room. After a short inspection of the room, Kel made his way upstairs to his room. As soon as he got to his bed, he tossed his bag and sword on the floor in the corner and collapsed onto his bed.

Kel opened the door to his foundry and looked around. Nothing was in disarray from the usual mess of tools strewn about. He spotted his daughter messing with something at an anvil and calmly approached.
"Seth, what are you doing?" he walked around the anvil to get a good look at what she was doing.

Seth scrambled to finish putting something together before tossing it to her father. "Here."

Kel caught the object and inspected it quietly. "A gun? What's this for?"

"It's not just any gun, It's a 50 calibur large revolver. You can't go around hiding your power but then go around throwing energy at baddies. This is a little more discrete."

Kel hefted the gun and pointed it across the room looking through the sights. "The kind of kick this thing would give at this size makes it a little unwieldy to the average human. Not very subtle." ..not to mention the round size could probably kill a bull

"Don't let anyone else pick it up then," Seth retorted. She placed a handful of bullets on the anvil before turning to walk away. "I'm going out for breakfast, want to come?"

"Yeah, sure." Kel pocketed the gun and the rounds and started to follow Seth toward the foundry exit.

Kel opened the door to his home and tossed his coat on the hook. As Seth entered, Kel shut the door. He started walking toward the door to the foundry. "Come on, I'd like some specifics. It'll be like any other high end job I've done." He paused at the door just pushing it open.

Seth's eyes lit up with joy "yay!" She jumped up and down a few times en route before taking in the rest of what Kel had said. "Like how specific, dad?"

"Do you want any fancy designs? any intricate carvings? adjusted weight centers? What sort of material would you like?"

"Um hold on, hold on." Seth reached for a pocketed sheet of paper and held it up to Kel. "Something like this."

Kel took the sheet after putting his mask on his head. He inspected the strangely detailed drawing and instructions carefully before lowering his mask and turning to enter the foundry. As he walked over to the forge, His voice echoed off the metal of his mask as he started speaking. "If you're going out, feel free to borrow something from storage. I'll need a day or two to finish this project." He stopped and spoke once more without turning around. He sighed and shook his head. "If you're taking the warglaves, wear a cloak. Don't let anybody get a good look at you."

Seth smiled brightly, "Okay! Thank you, dad!" She scurried off toward the storage crates and grabbed a pair of massive curved double bladed weapons from the top of a pile of weapons.

Seth shuffled through her closet for a cloak. She finished her hunt, having found a bright scarlet hooded cloak. Hurriedly she put it on, then peeked out of her window. The castle really was on fire. She untied her shoes and kicked them off to put on a pair of old work boots. She gathered up her weapons and opened the window to take off flying at full speed toward the castle.

Kel heard the burst of energy as his daughter flew out the window upstairs. "Come back safely...", he mumbled as he finished organizing his ingredients.

Seth flew in low on her return home. Being much closer to the house she pulled down her hood and aimed herself for her bedroom window. Noticing Kel just out front Seth waved and dropped down. "Dad!"

Kel practiced his sword style making fierce slashes and practicing his form. Without looking up or interrupting his movement he responded to his daughter, "So what happened at the castle?"

"It burned down and collapsed..." Seth dropped the glaives and sat down to catch her breath.

"Interesting... I wonder who would want to destroy the castle?"

"I don't know, but it looks like the fire kingdom is going to be blamed for it. I don't think this is some sort of military campaign though. There were no troops present, no spies, not even someone lurking in the shadows to watch."

Kel shook his head in a smug sort of anticipation. "Humph! That so called reaper probably did it."

"What?" Seth sat up and shifted quizzically, "What reaper?"

"Nevermind." Kel stuck his sword in the ground and stopped to take a break. He wiped his forehead and walked toward some water he left on the doorstep.

"I'm going to go down to the tavern to see what I can find out, but first I'm going to get something else in the way of weapons." Seth stood up and jogged up the doorstep and entered the front door. She stopped to look back out to Kel.

"I told you the warglaves were too big. Course, you don't need them to pull people out of a burning building. They'll really get in the way there. Grab some punch blades. You can hide those in your tunic sleeves."

Seth's eyes widened in surprise and amazement realizing that would have been a much better idea. She hurried to the storage carrying the glaives with her.

Kel ascended the doorstep and entered his home. He traveled upstairs looking around for his daughter. In the most obvious place, he spotted her sleeping in her room simply collapsed upon her bed. "Yeah, going in and out of a burning building can take a lot out of you.", he shrugged and shut the door before walking back downstairs.

Kel folded his arms behind him as he reached the bottom of the stairwell. he paced across the hall making his way back to the foundry. "Well, if it really was that reaper, I guess it's too late to tell old king Colm 'I told you so'." He shrugged. He entered the foundry and grabbed his welding mask, returning to the forge he was working at.

Kel emerged from his front door with a weapon and satchel in tow. He slung both over his shoulder casually and rose into the sky. He turned and looked about the landscape before turning and accelerating to the south. He looked over at the more notable landmarks like the castle ruins as he started to leave the airspace above his property.

Kel entered his house quietly, shoving the door closed with his heel. "Seth?", he called out walking toward the kitchen, "I brought you back some food." He placed the container upon the counter, then headed for the stairwell. As Kel reached the top of the stairs he paused noticing his daughter's room door slightly open with the light on. "Seth?" He spoke as he entered the room.

Seth sat upon her bed looking at an old family picture. Without even turning to face her father, Seth spoke. "Dad, do you want this war to happen?"

Kel took a deep breath and sighed. "No, I'd much prefer it didn't happen. I'm just not too sure there's anything we can do about it." he leaned against the wall by the doorway folding his arms.

"...but there has to be something we can do. Anything..."

Kel shuffled his foot and looked at the floor. "With all the unrest between the nations, it'd be near impossible. Political, philosophical, and ethnic differences aside; the fact that most of those who are in power in each nation have the power to bend aspects of nature to their will reinforces their will to conquer one another. If diplomacy could have worked I think that time is long past. Besides, we're supposed to be normals. This sort of thing isn't really our fight."

Seth turned and glared at her father, starting to tear up. "Even so, we can't just sit here and watch as the nations destroy each other!"

I can. "Look, I understand your feelings. I was the same way too once. A younger me would probably have been willing to turn over every stone in order to put a stop to this, but the castle is smoldering ruins. When I went to get your food someone attacked the tavern. The die has been cast. This situation has already spiraled out of control. It's only a matter of time before the battalions begin marching through the streets."

Seth stood up and looked down at her hands. "We're not normal. That's been apparent for some time. I think as non elementals we can do something that none else can. These abilities have to be worth something. I don't want our home to be crushed under the wrath of this war. If I can't stop this madness I can at least protect what I have."

"Ok... what do you want me to do? If I can help, I'll do whatever it takes."

"Well first we should start by clearing the Fire nation's name for the castle's destruction." With a renewed sense of hope, Seth went over to her pack and reached into it to pull out a notebook and pencil.

"Done, it was an earth elementalist."

Seth stopped in complete shock her jaw dropping almost as if it could fall to the floor. She turned around slowly to face Kel, raising a finger. "How long have you known that?"

"Since the attack on the tavern. It was that floppy-armed mutton-head from this morning. The guy you picked a fight with."

As the surprise subsided, Seth began taking notes down with her pencil and pad. "But, how?"

"Verdict is out on the castle. He tried to destroy the tavern by throwing a half molten rock and letting it fall to the wine cellar. I stopped it though, the stone set up as obsidian."

"Where is the rock? Didn't you tell anybody." Seth's voice increased in volume as she continued, mostly in shock by Kel's nonchalant responses.

"Some woman wanted to study it. It's volcanic glass, what's there to study? If you melt a rock and get it close to wood, paper or basically anything in a normal building it will ignite. The only reason it is a piece of obsidian now is because I cooled it so quickly."

Seth started to get a little mad. "Didn't you explain all of this to her, or anyone for that matter?"

"You're the first." Kel shrugged.

Seth threw up her arms in outrage. "DAD!"

Kel chuckled a bit. "Settle down. You have enough to help them at least. All they'd have to do is drag back the crook now. I'd bet he's already long gone by now though. Since he's likely from the earth nation you can just tell them that and let the manhunt begin."

Seth ran her hands across the top of her head and took a deep breath. "Dad, you need to work on your priorities. If you spoke up we could have caught him by now. They're probably spinning their wheels over that stone." Seth put her notes away and took a deep breath trying to calm down. "Those people from the Fire nation were in fear for their lives. I saw it in their eyes when I was at the castle. Argh! You should have said something!" Seth began pacing around nervously. "When will you finish my sword?"

"Probably tonight..."

"You said it would take a few days!"

"I had a clear schedule."

Seth screamed in fury and stormed off out of the room.

Kel began laughing as he walked followed Seth out of her room.

Kel made his way down stairs and turned to head for the smithy. "I should be done with it soon." He called out to Seth as he opened the door to the smithy.

"I'm going to hunt that brute down myself first thing in the morning!" Seth shouted from the kitchen before checking the contents of the container Kel brought.

Kel pitched back in a giddy tone from the smithy as he entered it. "Awesome. My little Seth, the giant slayer."

Seth rolled her eyes in frustration. I wish he'd take this more seriously.

In the smithy, Kel walked over to one of the anvils and retrieved a freshly cooled nearly finished sword. He carried it over to the grinding stone and began sharpening the blade. From not too far away from the house the glow of sparks could be seen as Kel sharpened and finished the blade. He began whistling as he worked.

A bird sails into the home through an open window and drops a parcel on the table. It reads as such.

Dear Sir Kel of the Smithy,
As you may or may not have seen by now, the castle has been attacked.
We need it repaired as quick as possible. If you can somehow repair it, even though your craft does not cover stone work, you will be paid from the royal vaults. If you accept this offer, please come to the castle as soon as you see fit. We will provide that material, the spells, anything. You and your daughter can both stay on the castle grounds or go back to your smithy when your days work is done.

There is no signature, no name. The bird leaves as quickly as it entered

Seth mumbles and walks over to the parcel to pick it up. She shouts out as she picks it up. "WE HAVE A MAILBOX!" Seth flips open the envelope and reads the note before walking back toward the forge. "Dad! They want you to fix the castle."

Kel looked up from his work and raised his mask. "Do I look like a carpenter? This is more the business of architects, you know, architecture."

"Quit complaining, this is a chance to scour for clues. We can get more evidence against that musclebound jerk to get him convicted. They'll bury him under the jail." As Seth entered the room she walked over to Kel and handed him the note.

Kel stopped the grinding wheel and inspected the note then looked back to Seth with a skeptical expression. "You sure this isn't a trap? There's no signature, and why would they invite us to stay in an unstable area?"

"Why would they try to trick us?"

"Oh I don't know, it could be because we know who caused this mess."

"And if they're after us for that we can find out what they're planning. This just means we're getting closer. Come on dad, help me out here."

Kel pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed."...ok, I'll check it out tomorrow, but they better provide an entire construction crew. If they didn't the whole thing could take years instead of weeks."

The next morning Seth awoke with a start. She shielded her eyes with a hand and sleeve and peered out of her window. It was a fairly bright and clear day. It took a moment but Seth remembered that it wasn't a normal day. She climbed out of bed and hurried downstairs to find her father.

Kel sat on his couch finishing the blade he had crafted. He polished and sharpened the edges to a glistening white, whistling as he worked. He looked up from the blade as he saw his daughter approach.

"Morning, dad." Seth yawned and stretched her arms out.

"Morning." He returned his focus to finishing the sword.

Seth scratched her head and leaned in to get a better look at Kel. "Did you get any sleep last night?"

"Yeah, I did. You just sleep longer than I do." He stood up and placed the sword on the coffee table before cracking his knuckles and starting toward the kitchen. "It's done. Are you set for your trip?"

"Yeah. I just need to get ready." Seth picked up the sword and inspected it carefully. She took it in both hands and made a single horizontal practice strike with it.

Kel returned from the kitchen eating a muffin, with his mouth half full he spoke again "Well, I gotta get going to the castle ruins. Lock up the house when you go." Kel walked over to the front door. He lifted a large bag over his shoulder and opened the door before setting out.

"Ok. Bye." Seth waved and smiled as her father left. As soon as the door shut, she turned and hurried up the stairs with her new weapon in tow.

Seth stepped out of the front door and onto the porch. She was outfitted in some fancy traveling boots, a green cloak, a fresh new white tunic which concealed her chain shirt underneath, and a leather harness to carry her sword quite nicely. Seth removed her map from her bag and inspected it. "Now if I were a cowardly castle burner from the earth nation, where would I hide?" She tapped a point on her map and nodded. "I'll start with the capital. If I don't find him, they should at least have some information, like a name at least." Seth pulled the front door shut and locked it. She put away her map then jumped into the air and began flying towards town.

Kel dropped in on his doorstep. He shook himself off much like a wet animal would do, to get the excess rain water and mud off of himself. Wiping his shoes on the mat, he unlocked his door with a flip of his house key and pushed into the house quickly slamming the door behind him. He hung up his coat and looked around the empty room. "Well.. I haven't had any other major jobs lately, Maybe I could take a vacation?" Removing his boots and leaving them at the door, he started walking toward his bathroom.
