There just weren't enough hours in the day. Not enough time for running and playing and hunting little bugs in the grass and in the trees. And so, the next best thing was frolicking by the moonlight. Nakawara was certainly willing to do so. Paws pounded the ground, carrying the spry male through the trees and into a clearing near the dead, old oak he called home. Without foliage to block his path, he let his legs sprawl, sending his body into the ground in a roll. Laughter echoed from his maw as he flopped to a stop, limbs flailing then falling to rest. Silver eyes shut for a moment before re-opening and gazing to the sky. The moon was nearly full tonight and he couldn't help but smile. A big ball in the sky. One day he wished he could reach and play with that shining ball. Paws lifted from the ground, batting at the air before him as if attempting to capture the moon. He was playful, sure, but he still knew he'd never be able to reach up that high. Sighing, he curled his legs back to himself, laying on his back, tail flicking back and forth.

Nakawara wasn't the only Kylandrei out late that night. In the moonlight, the blue of Volari's pelt was deepened in hue, the bright green more subdued. A slight breeze stirred her quills, and she turned, listening -- the soft sound of the wind was like music, and she hummed softly in response, no particular tune save whatever melody came to mind. Then, suddenly, she went from stillness to swift motion, darting between the trees until they thinned out, feeling the earth under her feet change to soft grass, and the wind strengthen...
She halted, head tilted quizzically, at the sight of another Kylandrei romping in the night air, then hurling himself to the ground. Chuckling, she trotted over fearlessly. Upon reaching where he lay, she leaned her head over his, so that they would each be looking at the other upside-down. "What was that for?"

The gentleness of the night had even this energetic male's eyes heavy. With each second that passed he lost his connection with the reality of the world. Dreams beckoned him to come and play in their world until he was ready to awaken and zoom through his own. The flicking of his tail slowed to a soft sway through the grass. Closer and closer to sleep he fell...
The moonlight that once shone against his eyelids disappeared. Surprised by the sudden change, his body woke him once more and silver eyes widened. The shadow was not a cloud, as one might have expected. Instead, the surprised on his face shifted into a smile. The sway of his tail livened to a faster swish than before. "No reason," he responded. He looked just as unaffected by her unexpected appearance as she seemed--walking up to him so fearlessly. "It was fun, though."

She blinked, then smiled in return. "Looked like it." Her expression grew absent for a moment as she looked away from him, up at the stars, and she hummed softly under he breath again, just a few bars, before continuing. "What's your name? I'm Volari." A rather abrupt way to begin, but then again, it seemed like as good a way as any in her distracted state. If he was feeling as sleepy as he had looked at first, best to introduce herself before he fell asleep properly, at which point the conversation would become rather one-sided. Propriety kicked in almost as an afterthought, and she backed up to a polite distance, allowing him to get to his feet without running the risk of knocking into her. Sitting on her haunches with her tail curled around her forepaws, she continued to study the night sky.

Nakawara meant to respond once more, but the leave of her gaze silenced him for the moment. He peeked past her head, watching the stars as she did. It was difficult for him to focus on even the glittering sky when there was company around, however. Eyes focused on the female again, just as she'd introduced herself. "Nakawara's my name," he revealed, already rolling over to his belly to ready himself to rise. If she hadn't moved, it was highly likely they would've brushed fur at least. He was careless in that aspect. Once to his paws, he plopped back onto his bum in an unceremonious manner. Looking up again, he watched the same sky that she watched once more. "Do you see something interesting?" he asked, genuinely curious.

She looked confused for a moment, turning her golden gaze upon his, tail flicking slightly behind her. "Eh? Oh! Right, right... you probably... Um." The blue-green female smiled again, a little more embarrassed this time, as if knowing how odd her next statement must sound to anyone else. "I've been chasing the wind all day... Do you ever get this thing, where you know you've got a piece of something in your head -- a song, a thought, something new -- but not all of it, and you think you hear the other part, but you can't figure out how to get to it? Happens to me all the time. Sometimes it helps to get out and look around." Aware that her explanation probably made no sense, she added, "But that's what I'm looking for. It's nice to meet you, Nakawara."

For as well as he listened to her explanation, Nakawara found that he had a difficult time understanding it. Sure, he understood that sometimes you just had to look for something. Sometimes there was a particular bug that he wanted to pounce that day and he'd search for hours just to satisfy that want. And yet, he couldn't recall a time when he was looking for a part of something he already had--literally or figuratively--and that's what propelled him through the day. He felt she had a good cause nonetheless. When, as a cub, he'd realized he'd never reach the moon, he felt empty inside. Maybe having to find another piece of something you already had left you with the same feeling. "Can I help you look?" he questioned, unsure if it was something he could really help with. That didn't keep him from wanting to try, however.

Seeing his apparent confusion, she laughed softly. Quite abruptly she flopped sideways onto the grass, rolling over onto her back, with her forepaws crossed slightly over her chest. "It's okay -- I know I'm not very good at explaining the thoughts in my head. I think most people would say I'm looking for inspiration... But that doesn't seem quite right to me. Inspiration's when you don't know what you need -- I know what I need, I just don't know where to find it." Wriggling her shoulders a bit to a more comfortable position, she glanced sideways at Nakawara. "Do you live around here?"

"I guess that makes sense." It did. A little, anyway. So, taking her lead, he flopped over, too. Although he was satisfied with staying on his side and pulling his tail to himself. It wriggled gently at the tip every once in a while as he nodded to answer her question. "I sure do. I come here all the time." Stretching his neck, he looked behind himself as if pointing the way. "Back there. I live in a big tree. I don't know what kind, though." The quickness of his words as he spoke showed he was far from sleep now. Once something caught his attention, he was certainly hooked. "It's dead, though. It was before I found it. But it makes a good shelter, anyway."

Rolling over abruptly onto her stomach, she lifted her head to look at Nakawara, eyes bright and interested. "A dead tree? Sounds like fun -- is there anything else living in it? Birds, little fuzzy things -- oh," she caught herself, frowning slightly, "but I guess they'd be too shy to come close if you live there, they always run away when I get close anyway. It's too bad, I only want to get a closer look." Dropping this tangent almost as swiftly as she picked it up, she continued brightly, "I'd offer to tell you what kind it is, but I don't know if I could tell if it's been dead for a long time. It's harder when you can't see any leaves, and all." Glancing away from him, she looked where he'd indicated, towards the tree, and the smile returned.

"I see birds in the branches sometimes," he revealed, sounding almost childlike now, like a little kid telling a grown-up some story that only a child would find important. "But if I move too much, they fly away. I don't like to sit still for long." He rose to his paws, shaking out his pelt with a good movement or two. "I've never seen any nests. I guess they don't like it without leaves." Of course, lack of nest was probably just because he moved around too much. All of the branches that were still strong enough to support him without cracking and breaking had been explored. Of course, as if she'd read his mind just moments before he'd spoken earlier, he frowned. "There aren't any leaves," he reiterated. He looked a bit disappointed that she might not be able to tell. Still, if she was willing to try, he'd be happy to take her there. "I can still show you, though. If you want."
